My husband is an Indianapolis Colts fan and our oldest son likes the Washington Redskins. Each of them has clothing and other items that represent their team. Likewise, with other sports fans, you know which team they prefer because of bumper stickers, Jersey's, headphones, pillows, and jackets, etc. The point I am making is that when we use images, we are showing the world what we enjoy. Hindu people who follow the teachings of Buddha utilize a statue in his likeness. My children's pediatrician said she had an altar in her home where she lit incense on a Buddha statue. There are also Christians who have images of Buddha in their homes, but when it comes to faith, based on scripture, we must view things slightly differently than others because the Bible does not promote images. Leviticus 26:1 tells us: You shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up [any] image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I [am] the LORD your God. The question I pose is why if you serve the One True God and Jesus Christ His Son, why do you need Buddha? He represents something but it is not the God of the Bible.
He does not share His glory
In I Samuel chapter 5, the people of Ashdod defeated the Israelites and took the Ark of the Covenant. They placed this Holy symbol in the temple of their fish-god Dagon. The next morning they found Dagon on his face in front of the Ark, with his head and hands broke off. The Lord sent a very clear message that He does not share His glory with idols. When Moses went up the mountain, the children of Israel became impatient and asked Aaron to make them a god they could see. They gave him their gold jewelry and he made a golden calf from it. The people were later punished when Aaron had to melt the gold and make it into a powder that they were forced to drink. The Lord dealt harshly with the Israelites for their sin (Exodus chapter 32). A Buddha statue is more than a simple household ornament or decoration because it represents worshipping that which is not commanded in the Bible. We all have free will choice, but if you have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb you should be careful not to offend Him. There is a reason you have chosen Buddha and you should think carefully about the consequences of having such a item in your home.
Some Christians say that a Buddha is a good luck charm and harmless. I always ask why do you need a good luck charm when you have the power of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Perhaps you believe that God has not answered your prayers in the manner you desire, so you have chosen to try something different. If so, this is willful intent to commit idolatry. We cannot manipulate Him into doing our bidding and neither can we threaten Him that we will turn to another because we did not get our way. This is dangerous because your immortal soul is at risk. It's true we can decorate our homes in any fashion we so desire, but again I ask why the Buddha? He represents a religion that does not believe Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life. Buddha is part of something that will ultimately lead people to hell, based on scripture. Christian need to be careful about what we have in our homes and who or what we connect to because He is a jealous God. We should never knowingly do anything to offend Him. When the Lord stopped speaking to King Saul, he sought out the witch of Endor and it cost him his life and the lives of his two sons less than 24 hours later. (I Samuel chapter 28).
Don't commit spiritual adultery
If a man or woman cheats on their spouse it is called adultery. Idol worship is referred to as idolatry and some consider it as spiritual adultery. If you love the Lord, you should not be doing anything on purpose that would go against His word and damage your relationship. Tarot cards, seances, Ouija boards, etc. are methods of connecting into the spirit realm, and by-passing the Holy Spirit. That is the equivalent of giving your body to someone who is not your spouse. Yes, it is that serious. When you don't know the origin of a thing you cannot be held accountable. The fact that you chose to place a Buddha in your home indicates that you believe there is some benefit to it. If you are a blood-bought believer looking for a good luck charm or a god you can see with your eyes, please reconsider. If you are angry at our Heavenly Father and think you are getting back at Him just remember your arms are too short to box with God. You may be able to fool others, and perhaps even yourself, but if you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you know that using the Buddha is wrong. You don't have to boy down to it or make sacrifices, just owning it speaks volumes and having it in your possession could be deadly.
Don't be a Rachel
In Genesis chapter 3, Jacob and his two wires left the home of his father in law. As they were traveling, Laban caught up with them and said he believed Jacob had stolen his household idols. Jacob swore his innocence and then added a curse. He said that if Laban found the idols with anyone in Jacob's company, that person should die. Laban searched high and low without results. When he came to his daughter Rachel she said she could not stand up to allow him to searcher her because she was having her monthly cycle. It turned out that Rachel was hiding her father's idols under her clothing. She had been married to Jacob for 20 years so she knew her husband worshiped the one true God, yet she clung to her father's custom of gods made with human hands. Rachel paid for her bad choice when her husband's curse stuck to her. She later died while giving birth to her second son Benjamin. Having a Buddha in your home could decrease the Lord's hedge of protection and or open the door for demons to enter. Worse yet it could lead you to choose Buddhism and turn your back on Jesus. Trust the Lord and walk by faith, not what you are dealing with. Don't turn to other sources and please get rid of the Buddha because now you are accountable for what you have just read. You know that a Buddha is made with human hands, so what makes you think it has any power? If you do, then you are depending on ungodly spirits to act on your association with the Buddha. Those who follow Christ should not play around with such things.
