Christianity: How to structure your Prayers

Steps of Prayer

Praying is one of the best things one could ever learn to do. There are various ways of praying and prayer could basically be viewed as having a conversation with the Lord. There are numerous prayers online that may help you with specific prayer requirements such as prayers for healing, protection, good health and so forth.

The most important prayer of all (and the only one you need to consistently pray as indicated by Jesus) is The Lords Prayer. Sometimes, however, it is comforting and assuring to add a personalized prayer to your praying routine as well. The problem comes when you have so much to say that you don't know how to organize your prayer.

A simple way of doing this is by following 5 simple steps.

1. Praise the Lord.

Here you would offer praise to the Lord for everything He is. He created the Earth, Universe and everything inside it, He created you and everything you have, and most importantly, He offers redemption to the world. The most vital part of any prayer is to remember to praise God. This can also be seen in the fact that the "Lords Prayer" starts with the line 'Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed (which means holy or glorified) be Thy name'.

2. Thank the Lord

Just as important as praising the Lord is thanking Him for everything he's done for you. It’s important to remember to thank the Lord and allow Him to see your gratitude and appreciation towards him for everything He does. Many of us have so much to be thankful for and yet we seize to count our blessings.

3. Ask for forgiveness

Before you can start asking God for anything else, your first priority should be asking God to forgive you for everything you may have done wrong. This not only covers asking God for forgiveness but also asking him to help you forgive anyone who may have wronged you. This is also seen in the Lords Prayer 'Forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us'.

4. Pray for others

Before you can get to praying for whatever you may want or need, it’s important to mention others who may need God more. Remember the homeless, the sick, your neighbor, your parents; anyone besides yourself. Bring everyone else to Gods attention. Pray for your friend that needs to find God or the one grown up in a different religious background but who is interested in knowing Jesus. Remember all these people and Pray for them.

5. Finally, pray for yourself. Jesus always put everyone else’s needs above His (this is ultimately demonstrated in His crucifixion to save us from eternal death) so we too need to follow in His example. In praying for yourself include everything you feel you need to discuss with the Lord; any problems, worries, needs or request.

Prayer is your main link with God. You don’t need to go on your knees to pray. You just need to put yourself in that state of mind. The more you pray, the more you communicate with the Lord and the better your relationship with Him will be. Always remember, even when you may feel like your prayers aren’t being answered, they are. Just not in the way you expected. Gods timing is always perfect. Never underestimate the power of prayer.

Thanks a lot for the input Deborah.

We need to show God our gratitude towards Him for all that he does as much as we possibly can. Prayer is our main form of communication with Him and any good relationship needs communication :)
