Evil Influence From a Demonic Force
Are Demons Attacking your Mind?
Have you ever been mentally attacked by a bad thought out of nowhere?
I have. It's easy in this world to get offended by others. Just go on any social media, and you can easily find others that are of a different political affiliation, and they are vocal about it. It's easy to get all worked up over things like politics.
Or maybe you have been dreaming and had a bad nightmare, and you try to wake up from the nightmare, but it doesn't end.
What I have just described to you are examples of how we can get when we let our flesh control our thoughts. No demon is necessary to think evil thoughts. Our flesh, when left unchecked, can take us down unrighteous paths.
But there are also times when demons or Satan can plant an evil thought in your mind, that is very likely unprovoked by natural events and at sporadic times.
Do you choose to act on this evil, or will you resist the devil?
James 4:7 says: "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Do Demons Dare to Delve into Your Mind?
So, what happens when a demons tries to drip devilish desires into your head?
There are two real options available:
- You can allow that seed of evil to grow and thrive until you take action. This is pure evil at work.
- You can resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Spiritual warfare is real, and there are spiritual weapons to fight against Satan and his minions. A relationship with God is required. A born-again believer cannot be possessed by a demon, but a non-believer is as vulnerable as a cat in a room full of fleas.
Christians Cannot be Possessed by Demons
One who is not a follower of Christ cannot stop or prevent from being possessed by any individuals means except by trusting in Jesus as Lord and Savior. If the Lord does not seal you and fill you with the Holy Spirit, you are left open to being possessed by one or more demons.
Take a moment to read more about Spiritual Warfare here.
Demons can still Torment Christians
Despite the fact that demons cannot possess Christians, demons can torment Christians, and they can also attack Christians in their dreams.
If a Christian does sinful things, it can allow demons easier access, much like opening a door.
- Drug use
- Ouija boards
- Seeking out Demonology, Witchcraft, Satanism
- Sexual sins, including: debauchery, fornication, pornography, polygamy
Demons Attacking those Seeking Jesus
Fight the Bad Thoughts
God has not abandoned you.
In fact, if you seek Him, He will be by your side every step of the way.
He does not want to see anyone suffer at the hands of Satan.
So, if you find yourself in temptation, or battling an evil thought that has just popped up in your head, take the thought captive. This essentially means, do not give in to it. Do not dwell on it. Pray for God to remove that thought from your mind, and focus on Him. This is where scripture memory verses can help you turn your focus back on God
2 Corinthians 10:5 says: "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ."
Nip Evil Thoughts in the Bud
No one can truly resist the devil or his demons without God. Yet most will acknowledge evil exists in the world, and still deny that there is a God.
Sounds funny if you ask me.
So, if you are human, and have found yourself battling evil or tempting thoughts in your mind, you must not dwell on them. Remove them by praying, and recalling a memory verse from the Bible, to turn your focus back on God.
So can a demon control your mind?
Yes, if you are a non-believer.
No, if you are born-again, but you can still be tempted by evil thoughts that need to be taken captive at the time of inception.
So trust in God. He will give you peace and comfort in times of trial, and protect you from the evil one.

You are very welcome, Patrick.
Patrick on July 30, 2013:
Thanks so much for this wonderful history of demons, it has helped me a lot and I will continue reading it. God bless you.

Thanks for sharing your opinion.
Liz Elias from Oakley, CA on August 15, 2012:
I don't believe in either dieties or demons, so in a word, no! In my opinion, blaming "satan" or a demon or some other evil entity is nothing more than a cop-out for failure to take responsibility for our own bad behavior. Conversely, if we study hard, work hard, and accomplish a great amount of good, we did it ourselves, and we should justifiably take credit and not hand it off to some nebulous mythical godhead.
You cannot have, all at the same time, pre-desination and freedom of will: they are mutually exclusive concepts. If we have freedom of will, then nothing we do is controlled by anyone but ourseslves; if instead pre-destination is at work, then nothing we say, do or think matters, for we are but puppets and robots; automatons, playing out a role that has been pre-cast. And I cannot/do not believe that is the case.

Thanks for your response, you've said all I could ask for in my goal of further understanding your mentality.
Zack Love (author) on June 28, 2012:
People do think ill-will towards others and lust. That doesn't mean it is right. Also note that there is a difference between being sexually attracted to someone, and lusting. Lusting is when your mind takes it to a fantasy of acting out what your flesh desires. Humans are sexual beings, I am not denying that, but God created us to have a monogamous relationship with one person and to enjoy sex within the boundaries of marriage.
Lusting is not healthy mentally, and it dwarfs real and healthy relationships with people. Lust is not needed to live a happy life, and God allows us to fulfill our sexual needs in marriage. People have sex outside of marriage, but it affects future relationships, and I believe it can hurt healthy future relationships.
Do demons cause all evil thoughts? I stated "no" in my hub. Our flesh can also lead us to dark places if we allow it.
My hub is not to say that atheists have more or less evil thoughts. My hub does not say Christians are better than Atheists or vice versa.
Steve, I would be happy to dialogue more with you via private message
if you have many more questions.
Steve Orion from Tampa, Florida on June 27, 2012:
Well, all human beings feel malice towards another and lust at one of more (usually more) times in their lives. I understand the part about malice, but lust? How can it be evil to be sexually attracted to someone? I think the fact that humans are sexual and feel lust are the reasons that this race still exists.
Then there is the point about demons. Do demons cause all "evil" thoughts? You state in your Hub, no person can resist evil without God. Is it possible, in your opinion, for an atheist to have less "evil" thoughts than a devout Christian? Also, perhaps most importantly, how do demons place "evil" thoughts in one's mind? Do they do this physically, without us knowing their presence, or do they do this from Hell or another dwelling of theirs?
Zack Love (author) on June 27, 2012:
Steve, examples of evil thoughts can be: thoughts of malice towards another person, lusting after another person, thoughts of wanting to cause harm or just evil things in general.
As mentioned in the hub, a specific way I deal with bad thoughts that may pop up in my mind is to focus on a scripture memory verse. My favorite is Isaiah 26:3 "You will keep him in perfect peace, those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."
Aside from scripture, just focusing on God through meditation, if laying in bed and mind is going down a bath path, to open your eyes and reset your thoughts, not letting them dwell on evil thoughts.
Steve Orion from Tampa, Florida on June 26, 2012:
I would like to know what kind of thoughts are evil thoughts and what, specifically, I should do to ward them off.

HLKeely, the foil tip was just to add humor. Thanks for commenting.
HL Keeley from Charlotte, NC on June 22, 2012:
This was amazing. I thought it was going to be non-sense like the foil tip, but it is legit. As a born-again, I can truly relate to this! Written very well and inspiring!
Ladysee from Kalamazoo on June 22, 2012:
Great Hub, actually i believe that Demons latches on to you like a leech and try to control your emotions, they make you become more darker. Awesome, thumbs up!
