Seasons of life. I am very happy to be writing and reading again at Hubpages.
We leave our Father and come to earth, born with the Light of Christ.
It feels great to be back, writing at Hubpages. As stated above, I've only been visiting Hubpages once in awhile these past many, busy years. But now in retirement, there are a few subjects I want to write about. It is December, 2020, as I write this article. I have several other subjects to write about -- none of them political -- and each is special to my heart.
The Hubpages site is an incredible site because a person can write something that gets shared half way around the world. Well, as long as there is a cellular or satellite communication there.
To introduce myself, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some people, in their mind, get this church mixed up with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ or another break-away church, the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ. I have noticed in the areas I have lived that when some news-breaking situation takes places, for instance polygamy, the newspaper writers in Canada and the United States rarely mention that the persons involved in the situation are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- but some break-away church of the original church. Instead, a lot of reporters for newspapers and online news, simply state 'the LDS church.'
That being said, every church has many good Christlike people. Many other institutions of different beliefs, other than Christianity, have some very good people also. It's a big world out there.
I want to share my thoughts and assert my belief that it is the Light of Christ, if we will hearken to its promptings, that helps us along the path to become more caring, more loving, more eager to serve others. There are millions and possibly billions of adult people in this world who have not even heard of Christ and yet they choose the good part of life every day. Is it because they feel, listen and respond to the promptings of The Light of Christ without even realizing? I assert that it is.
It's a journey. We are each here on a journey. We make our own choices every day.
It would be a Cold, Hopeless World if we had to come here all alone.
The Light of Christ.
I was excited in 2015 while preparing to teach a particular adult Gospel Doctrine lesson -- when I came across answers to questions I had had. Some time just prior to that, I had prayed to know and be led to understand the subject of The Light of Christ. I already understand the role of The Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is mentioned by many names in The Holy Bible. I had experienced the help and warning of danger when in peril. Emanating from this third member of the Godhead, I have also experienced comfort and peace and many other sacred help in moments at various times of my life. But in 2015, I was beginning to realize that the scriptures were sometimes talking about two different entities, one a personage without a body so as to fullfil his mission, and the other is more of a channel, beyond description or complete understanding while we are here in mortality, but, in fact, the method by which the Lord Jesus Christ leads and guides us if we will but let Him.
We are each born into this world as mortals and we come as little babies, but with The Light of Christ given with love to each of us.
The Light of Christ is entirely different than The Holy Ghost but the two work together often. I digress.
The Holy Ghost is sometimes called The Holy Spirit in scripture. A person needs to always look back to the previous sentences to figure out if The Holy Ghost is being talked about or whether it is The Light of Christ, also sometimes titled The Holy Spirit and/or The Spirit of Christ. These terms can sometimes be ambiguous.
The Holy Ghost can also be called the Comforter and the Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of God and several other names. So we always need to make sure when reading the scriptures that we understand the context of the sentences prior to the one we are reading. Having said that, the subject of The Light of Christ is huge. It is real and simply amazing.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I love to read, study and ponder The Holy Bible. My family and I also have The Book of Mormon and The Pearl of Great Price and The Doctrine and Covenants. For example, The Book of Mormon is another Testament of Christ and His Divinity. It is also a record of the ancient peoples of this continent and God's dealings with them. You can learn more about these other scriptures and how they came to be. I will put a link near the bottom of this hub; this article. And as you are not familiar with these other scriptures and their validity, I will instead use an excerpt from The Holy Bible to illuminate the concept of The Light of Christ.
John 1: 1 - 12 (King James version)
Here is one of many scriptures speaking of the Light of Christ. See verse 9 especially. John 1: 1-12 (King James version)
2 The same was in the abeginning with God.
3 All things were amade by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
6 ¶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was aJohn.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
11 He came unto his own, and his own areceived him not.
Little errors can lead to big detours.
By the way, if you visit the website of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the link I placed near the bottom of this hub, you will get there safely. But if ever you try to get there without the link, do not make the mistake of putting the word 'the' -- in the url when typing in 'churchofjesuschrist.org'. That word 'the' really changes things. I did that once by mistake and ended up at a lookalike site which is not in any way affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That site, at the last page of the screens, asks for a donation through Amazon! You can always confirm that any site to do with this church is an authentic site because there will be a symbol at the bottom of the page of a white Christus statue. It is a likeness of Christ standing with his arms outstretched in a gathering manner.
The Lord loves and guides us.
"The Light of Christ." A very excellent talk on this subject.
One of many talks given on this subject, this one by Elder Boyd K. Packer in 2004, is very explanatory and contains links to dozens and dozens of scriptures.
The title of the talk is 'What Everyone Called to Preach the Gospel, Teach the Gospel, or Live the Gospel Should Know.' The talk was originally given to new Missionary Presidents in 2004 and then the talk was later published in The Ensign magazine, a publication of the church, published in many languages.
I am placing a link to the talk after this paragraph for you to copy/paste into a new screen. It should open. I hope you will enjoy reading the talk and pondering it. We come to earth and are born with the Light of Christ within us. When we are young, we are told it is our conscience helping us know right from wrong. Actually, it is Christ striving with us and as we learn to recognize promptings from Him, given to us if we will but listen for the still, small voice, we receive more and more guidance. I know that He Lives. I know our Heavenly Father loves us so much that He sent His Son as our Savior and brother and friend. Here is the link to copy/paste. I am also placing an active link directly below this paragraph -- a wee bit below it. You will see the colored print for the link..
Here is the link to the talk 'The Light of Christ'.
- The Light of Christ
Using scriptures, Elder Boyd K. Packer explains the difference between the Light of Christ, also known as the Spirit of Christ, and other names, but in relation to the role of The Holy Ghost. Many talks have been given and written on this subject.
A Little Christmas Gift for you even though it's off topic?
I am also placing a favorite LDS children's hymn on this hub's screen, below. It's for adults, too. The title is 'If I Were a Shepherd'. The words near the end of the song are powerful and wonderful and true to me. The melody is beautiful. When Christmas passes, I'll replace the song with another favorite.
I leave all of this with you, dear readers, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
