Over three decades ago I become interested in the Bible, having drank from the heavenly cup once, I have not been tired to drink more
In article three I have started writing on (“Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.” (Psa. 119:98)) and have stated that the Psalmist did not orchestrate what he received like the people of the world would do today to manipulate things in their favor. I will continue with the exegesis of the verse in this article

3. What God Did
The verse shows in no hidden language what the Psalmist enjoyed, which he also wants all of those who are serving Yahweh to enjoy.
(“Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.” (Psa. 119:98))
How does what he enjoyed come about? Let us reason together.
(a) Noticing Him: God has been noticing him for a while, I believe it was not immediately that he learnt of God’s laws that the incident happened to him. This is true because he has by the word of the scriptures know about enemies, like Joseph who abinitio never thought his brethren could be his enemies, but when they sold him to the slavery land he knows better.
One gets to know one’s enemies as one grows, obviously children do not know anything called enemies for their minds are opened and simple. But as they also continue to develop and grow and mature they start noticing those people who do not like them.
It is after he, the writer, has noticed this, which is not a day’s work, that he started defending himself, however, he got to a certain juncture that he noticed a remarkable change, and the changes noticed was that those enemies can no longer stand by him.
As he grows to know this, it should be cleared that prior then he has heard of the laws and commandments of the Lord and has been keeping them.
Since the time he has been keeping the commandments of the Lord, God also have been paying attention to him to know what he would do for him.
(b) God Surprised Him: After patiently noticing him, and God discovers that he has neither deviated to the right nor to the left from his laws he also decided to surprise him to do what he least prayed for, for him.
I believe if he had been praying, he will be asking for the heads of his enemies and would not pray for what God has done for him.
Therefore the apostle says that we do not know how to pray, but the Spirit within us groans and prays on our behalf.
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” (Rom. 8:26)
(c) What God Did – Making Him Wiser Than His Enemies: God decides to do what he has not asked for, for him and which was better than what he would have asked for or what he has been asking for on his enemies. What God did for him was “(making him) me wiser than (his) mine enemies...” (Psa. 119:98)
God will always give us what we least expect what we do not pray for when and if we can keep his commandments. We recall that was also the promise made with King Solomon that as long as he can continue to keep the commandments and the precepts of the Lord, he will continue to surprise him and do what he has not asked for, for him. (1 King 3:10-14)
Nothing would be more comforting and refreshing than one becoming wiser than one’s enemies.
(d) Looking at the Wisdom: The kind of wisdom that he was given transcends all the wisdom of the enemies. We need to know that the people of the world are wise in their dealings as Jesus also said.
“And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.” (Luk 16:8)
The wisdom being said here is cunny wisdom and not real or genuine wisdom. These are the wisdom with which the enemies use to upturn all that children of the Light have done, they used their subtilty to maneuver their ways through, and it because they know how to manipulate things that people fear them and they are said to have intellect and wisdom.
Intriguingly, the Psalmist received a rare blessing from the Lord as he also blesses him with wisdom that outwits these wisdoms of the enemies.
Apart from the spiritual wisdom that he has received, the physical wisdom was also given him. The physical wisdom which has been given him are those which made the enemies to fear him, they are those which made the enemies to come bowing to him as a leader, they are those which forced them to succumb to him.
Enemies would not cave in it the wisdom is spiritually inclined alone, but they agreed him to be leader because physical wisdom is also associated with this.
Consider King Solomon, it was because his wisdom did not stand at the realm of the spiritual alone that made the people of the world to be coming to him, assuming his wisdom has be limited to spiritual alone, people from all over the nations of the world wouldn’t have come to him to listen to him speak to them.
That is the similitude of what the Lord has done for this man, this he will equally do for us if we be keepers of his commandment, he will make us wiser than our enemies.
4. What to Do
As believers today, if we want to enjoy this benefit, we have to do as this Psalmist has done and which is keeping the law of the Lord.
The law of the Lord is the word of God that has been given us, let us learn to keep them in our hearts and what Yahweh has done for him he will do for us.
I shall start the exegesis of Psalms 119:99 in the next article.
