For over thirty years I have been praying and talking about this subject prayer, I have written this based on my experience in the art
In the previous article I have talked about what makes the ancients people stand out and how the ancients get their understanding. I want to continue with my exegesis of this verse in this article.
The Development Noticed
The author of the book in his writing has shown what has happened not what will happen. This he perhaps noticed after due examination and interaction with the ancient ones who are around, especially when disturbing issues developed in their country and how each person has reacted to the situation and the counsels given as to see those cases resolved.
“I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.” (Psa 119:100)
Salvation Song - Stuart Townend
Who the Ancients Are
The ancients in Hebrew is written as “זקן” when romanticized it becomes zâqên (phonetic spelling is zaw-kane') which means old, aged, elder.
Why He Has More Understanding?
He has more understanding than them all because he keeps the precepts of the LORD.
What is Precepts?
Precept in Hebrew is “פּקּד פּקּוּד” which when romanticized becomes piqqûd piqqûd (phonetically it is called pik-kood', pik-kood') which means mandate, appointed, commandment, statute.
Ever since the author has been a child and he has been learning from the teachers who grow to become the ancients, and few ancients around, he has been keeping the statutes of the Lord as being shared by those people unto them. When others are deviating from the precepts and the Laws of God, he never did that, he never allows anything to push him out of the laws of the Lord, he stays with it, in thick and thin.
Having stayed with the precepts of the Lord even contrary to all odds, those precepts become part and parcel of his being.
God the Rewarder
God who diligently studies all and sundry on earth notices this young man, what he has been doing how he has stayed with his precepts even when others advised that he changes course, decides to reward him for what he has been doing, thence, giving him understanding more than his peers and from thence more than the ancients.
This indubitably is true of Jesus Christ when he was in the temple discussing with the ancients of his days, as all who were there with them seeing his interaction with them at that tender age cannot but become astonished at how he answers and questions them.
“And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
“And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.” (Luk. 2:46-47)
This of course God also wants to do for each and every one of us who believes in Christ Jesus because we are his children and servants and he has said in his word that who has at a point given to him that he has not rewarded?
“Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?” (Rom. 11:35, also read Job 41:11)
This was done for this man and he is a man of like passion like we all are, he will also do something like this to us if we give our time to keeping the precepts and the statutes of the Lord.
The Benefits in What He Has Said
I will want us to see some few points of note from what the man has said in this write up which is made available to all globally then and presently.
1. Not Derogatory Word: As said earlier, the author by saying this does not mean he was proud nor that he was belittling the ancients, but he by this was showing God’s grace and what he and only He, Yahweh, could do for humans.
2. He by This is Encouraging Someone: By this statement, he is telling everyone on earth of the need not to limit ourselves irrespective of who our teachers and the ancients we have passed through are.
3. When We Do What He Wants He will Surprise us: He again by this word is telling someone who may be discouraged, who may have felt God has forsaken him like prophet Malachi said in his book of what the people were saying that God has forgotten them, that God will never forget anyone who does what he likes as he will come to his aid and do what would surprise the entire world for him.
“Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts?” (Mal. 3:14)
4. The Word Shows There Is Sowing Period: The word shows that it is not immediately that one starts something that one would get to the peak but there are always sowing period and harvesting period. People always want to listen to testimonies which of course comes at the harvesting period but they would not want to pass through the sowing periods. He is telling all that there is sowing periods which all would pass through before harvesting moment arrives.
Summing the Three Verses Together (Psalm 119:98-100)
Throughout the world it is known that a person who can excel in all these areas: becoming wiser than the enemies, have more understanding than the teachers and the ancients, such people would stand out tall among his peers and even anywhere in the world.
Like the author of the book of Proverb states, such people will not stand before mean people alone, they will stand before the mighty and the powerful in the land.
“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.” (Pro. 22:29)
If anyone therefore desires to stand before the mighty and the powerful all over the globe, one needs to keep the commandments of the Lord, they always should be our meditation. (Jos.1:8)
