Avoid These Three Guys

Psalm 1:1-3 introduces another set of three things. These are three kinds of people to avoid – the ungodly, sinners and the scornful. You cannot be consecrated if you keep company with just anybody. The word of God is clear on the fact that we can only be blessed if we walk with the right people.

The Ungodly

The ungodly person is one who is a bad person. He is a wicked person who is so bad that he counsels others to do likewise. The ungodly person is the wicked person who says that there is no God. He is without God. Such people don’t retain God in their hearts. The ungodly execute Satan’s agenda to steal, kill and destroy. The ungodly don’t regret shedding blood. They precipitate ethnic wars and laugh about the wreckage they produce.

Ephesians 2:12

That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

The ungodly are without Christ – without God. They are aliens from the commonwealth of Israel. The ungodly are strangers from God’s covenants of promise and they have no hope. Because the ungodly have no hope they constantly tread a path of destruction and they drag others along with them. Jealousy fills the hearts of the ungodly because they don’t have God, neither do they experience His favour. Darkness is the domain of the ungodly. They practise wickedness and rejoice when evil is displayed before them.

The Sinner

The sinner is an offender, one who is accounted guilty. The difference between the ungodly and the sinner is that the sinner may not be as wicked and unrepentant as the ungodly. The sinner may be accounted a sinner on technical grounds. He bears in his nature the Adamic traits that make man guilty before God. The sinner is declared so because he falls short of God’s perfection. His heart lacks Jesus and that makes him a sinner. All of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God. One can appear to be morally good and still be a sinner. The fact that one does not commit sins like fornication, murder, drunkenness, idolatry and drug related crimes does not mean that one is not a sinner.

Romans 3:23

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

I believe that to be ungodly takes the practice of sin to a higher level. A sinner may not be as dangerous as an ungodly person. “All have sinned” means that all have missed the mark. Someone may appear morally good and still be a sinner.

Many “morally good people” don’t understand why they need to be born again. They cannot comprehend why they need to receive Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. These “religiously pure” ones don’t know that one will go to hell without Jesus even if one appears good.

The Scornful

The word scornful means to have in derision or make a mockery of. These are the kind of people who despise the things of God and call God names. Literally, they make mouths at God and swear at Him. Mockers devalue the things of the Spirit and desecrate God’s house. Mockers are masters in denying the truth. They contend against the deity of Christ. They deny the resurrection of Christ and dismiss the claim that the Bible is the Word of God. The scornful deflate well-meaning believers with their words.

Jude 1:18

How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.

Mockers discourage the righteous from obeying God. Mockers despised Noah for seeing the coming flood. These mockers were overtaken by the flood because they did not enter the ark Noah built. Michal the wife of David mocked at him because he danced before the LORD without shame. She was cursed with barrenness for despising God’s man. Desist from making a mockery of people’s ministries because their styles of ministry or personalities are not appealing to you. Forty-two children were devoured by two bears because they mocked at Elisha’s bald head. We cannot continue to walk around people who take holy things lightly. Some people even make jokes with tongue- speaking, thereby desecrating a holy gift.

The controversial Da Vinci Code which portrays Mary Magdalene as Jesus’ wife, constitutes a mockery of sacred truth. It also claims that the gospels of Philip and Mary Magdalene herself were banished by the Catholic Church in order to conceal the truth. The Da Vinci Code insinuates that Mary was pregnant with Jesus’ child at the time of the crucifixion. It even goes on to say the Catholic Church has sought vehemently to eliminate the living descendants of Jesus Christ by murdering them. Such blasphemous speculations constitute abominable lies and mockery.

This is mockery aimed at dismissing the deity of Christ. Christ could not have married and raised children, because God cannot marry and raise children through biological means. If the seed of Jesus had been incorporated in His descendants they would not have been human like the rest of us. Only Jesus is God manifested in the flesh. The Da Vinci Code is an attack on the infinite wisdom of God. It seeks to nullify the greatest difference between Christianity and the other religions. Of all the religions in the world only Christianity has a founder who is God in the flesh.

To live a consecrated life we must avoid mockers who try to water down the supernatural aspects of Christianity they don’t understand. A person’s level of consecration is related to the company he or she keeps. It is difficult to be ungodly without association with the ungodly. Unless one stands in the way where sinners ply their trade it is difficult to be a sinner. A person will find it practically impossible to be scornful if he or she does not keep company with the scornful.

The Influence Of Sin

Sin is mainly an influence. Consecration is also an influence. Select your company well and you would have selected your way of life.

1 Corinthians 15:33-34

Evil communication or company corrupts good manners.

Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

Don’t keep company with people whose character you don’t want to emulate. You will eventually be corrupted by their ways. Sometimes dubious members of a congregation may try to impose themselves on a pastor just to cover up their acts. They may buy his commitment to them with money or use the weapon of sex to entrap him. Thousands of pastors have been gagged by agents of the devil. They have lost their voices and their association with sinners and the ungodly has robbed them of their ability to reprove sin.

Proverbs 22:24-25

Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:

Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul.

The Bible even warns us against people who are in the Church and profess to be believers but live in sin. We are admonished not to keep company with such.

1 Corinthians 5:9-11

I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

If a convert is made in a church, and finds himself in the company of ungodly people, that convert never matures into an effective believer. I have observed this unfortunate trend in many churches over and over again. The need to choose one’s friends carefully applies even to ministers of the gospel. To think that you will not eventually be affected negatively even if you walk closely with the ungodly is gross deception. In many nations you are likely to see ministers group together according to their beliefs. Nevertheless, a closer look at the pastoral groupings would reveal that most of them are based on character traits.

You may pay a heavy price of being branded as a self-righteous person if you choose not to join the league of evildoers. The workers of iniquity may even persecute and possibly set traps for you to fall into sin, just to prove that they are not the only sinners. In spite of these risks, you have to take a stand against sin. Protect yourself from contamination.

I must however, warn that it is spiritually unwise to make yourself the watchdog of God’s people. If you make it your business to expose sinners in God’s house you will soon become a victim of the sins you condemn. We must speak the truth in love.

Consecration has a three-dimensional perspective. The figure three connotes completeness and is also a number for God. God is a Trinity. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever. God is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. The figure three is common in many things that have to do with God. We have just seen the three sides of a person’s life of consecration – his manner of life, thoughts and speech. We have also discovered that there are three kinds of people a consecrated person should avoid. These are the ungodly, the sinner and the scornful.

Having discussed the key perspectives of the three-dimensional consecration and the three kinds of people to avoid, let us proceed to discover three simple secrets to living a consecrated life. Consecration does not just happen. Our lifestyle is the product of the things we do every day.
