Astrology: Neptune

Neptune Étienne by Jeaurat - Neptune

Neptune Étienne by Jeaurat - Neptune

Neptune is the planet of dreams, imagination, and illusion. Neptune represents the unconscious, your inner spiritual and life, and your emotional sensitivity. Neptune governs the arts music, art, dance, poetry, writing, acting, theater. Neptune is also the planet of delusions, addictions, and escapism. It’s how we retreat when life gets too rough, too mean and too real.

Neptune rules over the zodiac sign of Pisces and rules over the twelfth house. Traditionally the twelfth house is ruled by Jupiter and Neptune but now its main ruler is Neptune. The twelfth house is the house of the subconscious (unconscious). It is also the last house. It’s how we deal, reflect and ponder life. How we address our issues, our fears, strengths, pains, struggles, sorrows, happiness, etc. It is about dealing with our repressed emotions and coming to terms with who we are, what we did, and what our lives are ultimately about. The Twelfth house represents confined spaces that binds us (hospitals, jails), and also deals with karma. It is about endings and clearing things up, perhaps for the next life.

Neptune in Roman mythology is the god of the sea, water and horses. Neptune’s Greek counterpart is Poseidon. Neptune is the brother of Jupiter and Pluto. Neptune’s glyph or symbol is taken from Neptune’s trident, essentially representing the curve of spirit that is pierced by a cross of matter.

It is important to mention a unique factor about Neptune. It is an outer planet and generational planet. An outer planet in astrology is a planet that moves slower than other planets in one’s natal chart, since it’s further from the Sun and earth. Mercury, the Moon, and the Sun move relatively quicker than an outer planet or generational planet in astrology. For example the Sun in astrology passes through the earth in about 30 days (aka the time period of a sun or zodiac sign). Neptune takes 165 years to go around the Sun.

This long period is therefore divided into between 14 years of Neptune in each zodiac sign, thus making it a generational planet too. This time period in a sense spans a generation. In astrology there are four generational planets is Neptune, along with Uranus, and Pluto. So people of a same generation and relatively similar age group will (more than likely) have the same zodiac signs for these generational planets in their own natal charts. Just as Jupiter is considered the higher octave of Mercury, Neptune is known as the higher octave of Venus and is the second of the transcendental planets

Neptune Exalted in Leo/ Cancer

Exalted in astrology means the highest and best position a sign in a planet can be in. In this case, depending on the astrologer or astrology enthusiast, Neptune can either be exalted in Leo or Cancer. For this case I will be talking about both of these signs exalted, of which you can make your own opinion about it in the end. Regardless, exalted signs’ captures the true and ultimate expression of the Moon’s energies.

Neptune exalted in Cancer?

Cancer is an water, feminine sign, ruled by the Moon. The moon rules the emotions and the family (specifically a mother figure), and in Neptune it can be at home with Cancer. Naturally intuitive, emotional and compassionate Cancer activates and is comfortable with the subconscious cues and emotions that Neptune represents. Emotions cannot be seen and be quite irrational, just as the subconscious and Neptune. Neptune and emotion does hand in hand. Even so, the emotions are real and are very much alive, whether or not we acknowledge them or not. Neptune exalted in Cancer is quite natural and at home, because it can achieve emotional depth of this watery planet with great ease.

Neptune exalted in Leo?

Leo is a fire, masculine sign, ruled by the sun. The sun represents your personality, confidence, and can represent a father figure in astrologer. Here Neptune in Leo is vibrant, artistic, confident, passionate and filled with energy. It doesn’t achieve the emotional depth as Neptune in Cancer, but it is also a comfortable position to be in. This is because it Leo, the gregarious lion is at play, child-like and in peace. It is less emotional and mysterious here and more about fun and beauty. It may be too proud and less sympathetic in Neptune though, and less delusional as Neptune traditionally is. Even so, that could be a good thing.

Neptune Detriment in Virgo

Neptune is said to be in detriment in Virgo. Detriment represents a planet and zodiac signs most difficult and challenging position. Detriment doesn’t fit the ideals of a planet that it’s supposed to represent at all. Neptune is in detriment in Virgo, because Neptune and Mercury do not go hand in hand. Virgo is an earth sign, feminine sign ruled by mercury. The mercury is about communication, intellect, and all things rational. Neptune is about the subconscious, the unsaid things, emotions and all the irrational things. Neptune and Virgo are incompatible. Virgo is critical, judgmental, very matter of factly, and relies on more reliable things like logic. All the while Virgo finds it difficult to achieve the emotional depth and fluidity needed in a healthy Neptune.

Neptune Fall in Capricorn/Aquarius

Neptune is said to be in the Fall in Capricorn or Aquarius. Fall in astrology represents a sign in which its position in a planet is uncomfortable and weak. Though this position is not the worst position it’s difficult to express the nature of the planet. The Fall is always the opposite sign of a planets exaltation.

Neptune Fall in Capricorn

Capricorn is the opposite of the sign of Cancer. Capricorn is an earth, feminine sign, ruled by Saturn. Saturn rules over structure, order, discipline and hard-work. Saturn with Neptune is quite strange together. Neptune is all about tearing down and transcending boundaries and Saturn is about creating boundaries. Essentially they work against each other, though this is not necessarily a bad thing. Saturn is one of the great teachers and a transpersonal planet, so in Neptune it teaches that you can achieve Neptune ideals in a safer setting while enforcing boundaries. Capricorn may be too cold, too harsh and unemotional but there is a moral and learning lesson in this. Unlike the detriment sign, when there isn’t a learning lesson, it just is.

Neptune Fall in Aquarius

Aquarius is the opposite of the sign of Leo. Aquarius is an air, masculine sign, ruled by Uranus (and Saturn), its main ruler is Uranus. Uranus rules over technology, innovation, rebellion, and change. Aquarius though fixed in modal is very individualistic and changeable. Random, intelligent and rebellious isn’t a Neptune quality. It is strange because Aquarius and Uranus has a psychic insight that is characteristically a water sign trait. This trait isn’t emotional and intuitive like a water sign but just as valid. Perhaps this is because Uranus/ Aquarius with all its rebellion and future thinking can tap into energies using its intellect. Though you have to understand Aquarius isn’t about intellect for intellect’s purposes but in use of and for humanity. Think higher, think better and think for others. This can apply to Neptune because it is compassionate and sympathetic. Aquarius isn’t these things but perhaps that’s ok.

Overall, Neptune is a planet build on the unconscious of dreams and sleep, of emotions and the undercurrents of a hidden world. Neptune is about illusions, disillusions, imagination, and escape, of unconscious, emotional serenity and beauty. Lastly Neptune is about dissolving boundaries, universal love (as a higher octave of Venus) and unity.
