Are You or Someone You Know Addicted to Psychics or Tarot?

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. - Matthew 6:34

There is a dirty little secret out there that nobody wants to talk about. Someone that you work with or know personally may be addicted to psychics or tarot, but they are too ashamed to admit it. Mainstream society thinks you have to be crazy to believe such nonsense, but for the person addicted to a psychic, they don't care, they just want answers. Once they get hooked, they are tangled up with not only the intense feelings they can't cope with, but also whatever outcome the psychic promises. Either way, they can't let go of it. The psychic or tarot cards acts like a placebo or a crutch.

For some people, tarot or visiting a psychic is just pure entertainment, but nothing they take seriously. It's just for fun. An addict, on the other hand, crosses that line and it becomes a major problem.

A search on Google will give you over 18,200,000 results for "psychic" so obviously someone is interested in seeing them. On the other hand, if you do a search for "tarot", you will get 19,100,000 results. Surprisingly, tarot is more popular than psychic by almost a million results. Some people believe that the occult is harmless, but is it really just harmless fun or more than that? Some will go as far as to tell you that you open the door to demons when you consult with psychics or tarot.

False Saviour

Many addicts, for one reason or another, don't have effective ways of coping with a heavy heart and they're on their own so they reach out to these psychics for comfort and attention. The psychic becomes their personal healer and sometimes even their Saviour, promising them a brighter future. They put a lot of hope in what they say and if one psychic doesn't tell them what they want to hear, they'll keep going to different ones until eventually they find one that tells them what they want to hear.

Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God. - Leviticus 19:31

Drug of Choice

The whole experience of turning to a psychic or tarot is very much like a drug. No matter how much they try, they can't let go. It's like a great big adrenaline rush. The psychic tells them what they want to hear or the cards tell them their day is going to go this way or that way. It doesn't matter as long as they get answers when they feel their world is slipping away. People who go to these psychics come from all walks of life, rich and poor, young and old. It doesn't make any difference. Just like any other addiction, it has no barriers.

Signs of an Addict

Someone addicted to psychics or tarot may exhibit some of the following signs:

  • They become very dependent on them for answers.
  • They become increasingly despondent or stressed out if the outcome doesn't come out as predicted.
  • Over time, they grow agitated and bitter because they want answers and they want them now.
  • They will spend a great deal of money for these readings. If it's money they just don't have, they will beg, steal or borrow to get it. Some will even pay up to $250 an hour. For many who are lost, it's no laughing matter.
  • Some can't go a week or even a day without consulting a psychic or their tarot cards regarding personal life decisions.

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. - Jeremiah 29:11

Broken Heart

According to one lady I met who worked as a psychic, most people consulted her because of a broken heart. The truth is the pain is unbearable for some. When someone they've loved hurts them, they just can't accept it. They go through a long period of absolute denial. They hope that one day they will get back together with that person. It's even worse when someone they've loved abandons them for no reason and they are left floundering trying to pick up the pieces of their lives. Their friends and family don't want to hear about it so they reach out to these psychics who claim to have all the answers with just one catch, you have to pay them first. The glowing promises for your future are conditional based on a monetary fee. They are not based on the Truth.

When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn. - Isaiah 8:19-20

The Solution

Over time, most addicts get fed up with all the psychics and tarot. Their pain starts to subside, and then the addict starts to look for the Truth, the real Truth. The Truth lies in Jesus. You don't have to pay for God's promises. Jesus gives you the Truth freely. He will listen to you 24/7 and he will guide you with his Word to a better life, one that is filled with promise and hope. But, he can't help you unless you surrender. It's a matter of letting go of the addiction, and repenting so that he can repair the damage. He will do just that if you place your faith in him. Seek out people who have faith and join a local church. They will encourage you and lift you up in prayer and fellowship.

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. - John 8:32

The solution is not hard. Addicts need faith and prayer. If they believe in a spiritual world, they need to hear the Truth and that is the Truth of the Gospel. Psychics can promise you the moon, but Jesus knows they can't guarantee it. Nobody on earth can wipe away your pain and suffering, but Jesus can and he will if you let him.

If you still can't let go for whatever reason, I urge you to seek out a mature Christian who is strong in the faith and ask them to pray for you. Confess to them that you're addicted to a psychic or tarot and that you need help. Let them pray for you and let the healing begin.

The truth of the matter is your future is in the hands of God, not a psychic and definitely not in cards. Faith is the one and only key to healing a broken heart and making it whole again. Amen.

Side Note

By the way, my curiosity led me to find out just how many results "Jesus" gets in Google's search engine. Jesus has 846,000,000 results. And the "devil" has 552,000,000 results. When you think about it, isn't that interesting? The spiritual world is definitely alive and well, no matter how you choose to look at it.

As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. - Acts 16:16-18

Thank you for the kind words Melissa. I feel so good like a weight is off of my shoulders. Unlike the panic in my soul when I was addicted. You are so right about drifting. Challenges are a reminder to grow closer to the source; God. So I understand. May HE continue to bless you.

Hi Losted Soul, Mine lasted quite a few years too, but there is hope and you can do this. There is a strong spiritual world surrounding us. It is a daily battle that we all fight. I pray that things get better for you. I lost a lot of time and money too but forgiveness is key.

MissMelissaK (author) from Stuart, Florida on May 08, 2015:

Shea, congratulations on 3 months in. I absolutely know how you feel. It's a pain that very few words can describe accurately. Thanks for reminding me of what is most important. God bless you!

MissMelissaK (author) from Stuart, Florida on May 08, 2015:

Thank you Faith. God bless you. You almost brought tears to my eyes. I have been clean of the Tarot and fortune teller fantasies for quite a few years now. I have been faced with new battles and temptations as we all have and I know when things get a little off balance, I can see that it's because I'm drifting away from God. God must be front and center. I have so much to learn. Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad my article helped you. I owe it all to God for breaking this stronghold.

Shea on March 19, 2015:

I'm about 3 months in but I certainly recognize it as an addiction. Like many it was driven by heartache and uncertainty. I need to put my faith and trust in the Lord and not be dependent on man. Thank you for this page! This helps so much!!

Hi Melissa, a while back I made a post and I can honestly say it was a struggle but I continued to grow spiritually with God. I am so grateful to now say that it has been a complete year free of not calling. -- God is good and I thank you Melissa for your article. Please keep this online. When you are addicted and trying to stop you go online for support and this page comes up. It was such an inspiration to me to read your page. I pray for everyone who posted and hope that you continue to keep God first. -I read a quote recently that stated, ""even those who believe in fate look both before crossing the street.....". Just remember , no one can predict your future....

Lou on December 07, 2014:

After a 20 year addiction to clairvoyants I know that you need prayer and a back-up plan. When tempted call a Christian care line, friend or engage in a hobby. Retrain your brain to cope with anxiety and forgive yourself. Guilt & self-hatred only lures you back

Dear Faith, God bless you. And thank you for brightening my day with feedback. I wish I could take back my mistakes too. I know exactly how you feel. Rejoice in your freedom from the bondage. You are FREE!!! Trust God for your ENTIRE future for he knows the plans he has for you, not them. ;)

Faith on March 06, 2014:

Thank u sooo much. I am 3 months free today. God is good!!!! U do not know how much this page and the comments has helped with not calling. I would google hotline addiction from time to time . It got to a point where certain lines knew who I was and what I was calling about. Nothing and I mean nothing came true of what anybody them said. I can proudly say that I have no urge and pray for forgiveness all the time for my lack if trust in God.. I wish I could take may 2011 to dec 2013 back, but I can't. I should have spent that time praying instead . To all those that are struggling, has any if the predictions come true???? I know they haven't . That is a sign. God didn't ordain some lady over the phone or in a small shop, power over ur life . If that were the case, they would be rich.

MissMelissaK (author) from Stuart, Florida on January 07, 2014:

I'm sorry Nick. I'm not God but I do believe in God's Word. Tell your Mom to crack open her bible and see that God sees divination as a sin. Tell her that the Word of God says she is communicating with demons and that is from Satan. That is not from the Lord. If she believes in God, ask her to place her total TRUST in God and not in psychics. The psychics are not from God. I repeat they are not from God. They are from the devil!! Tell her its an abomination to the Lord! Deuteronomy 18:10 --- There shall not be found among you any one that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, De 18:11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar

spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. De 18:12

For all that do these things are an abomination

unto the LORD She can't have it both ways! Tell her to SURRENDER to the Lord and pray for conviction. He will set her free. She has to put her FAITH in GOD and not in FALSE IDOLS!! If she loves Jesus and attends church regularly, God's Word shouldn't be mumbo jumbo to her. It's clearly written in scripture that God finds fortune telling wrong!! I pray that her heart will be convicted and she will be set free! The answer is to have complete FAITH in Jesus!!!! If all else fails, talk to her pastor and see if he can sit down and convince her that it is wrong in the eyes of God!

Nick on January 03, 2014:

I was sincerely interested in what you have written until I got to the end and you recommend "faith and prayer" as a solution... My mom has problem with trusting psychics too much and does not seem to listen to any of us telling her otherwise. She goes to church regularly. Got any other "brilliant" ideas? I came here to look for a solution but got nothing but bunch of mumbo jumbo.

MissMelissaK (author) from Stuart, Florida on December 28, 2012:

Don't be ashamed. I pray that God changes your life for the better. If he can help me put down those cards for good for over a year, he can help you too. Put your trust in him. By putting trust in the outcome of the cards, you make them your God (Its all a deceptive and attractive lie from the enemy that you NEED the cards!) The truth is you don't need those cards one bit and I for one have owned over ten decks at one time. I threw them all away and I relapsed once again with online tarot and one more deck, but I soon felt such major conviction from my relationship with God that I stopped. Not only that but the dark and heavy energy that surrounded me when I relapsed made me see that the cards are not a gift from God, but rather an enticing LIE from the enemy who doesn't have my best interests at heart. God said put no other Gods before me as the first commandment for a reason. Take a deep breathe. Be still and know that God's love is all around you. He loves you so much and he wants what is best for you. The cards are holding you in bondage and playing with your emotions. God doesn't play with your emotions. He knows better than that. He cares about you and he wants what is best for you. Whatever it is that you need the cards to answer, do yourself a huge favor and bring that very question to God in private and surrender your need for an answer in prayer. Really surrender your heart to God. Put your heart and sole in that surrendering. Wave the white flag above your heart. Trust him to reveal an answer to you in his time and not the card's time. Trust him to care for you and provide for you. Read the Bible on a DAILY basis. I prefer a study bible that allows me to dig deep into God's word. Two I love and recommend are Matthew Henry's Study Bible available by Kindle on Amazon and the Life Application Chronolological Study Bible with illustrations!!! They are both so wonderful and comforting!!!! Trust me, I used to be so bad with psychics and tarot and now I've been CLEAN for a couple of years. I laid it at the cross of Jesus and I don't feel compelled at all to put any $$$$ to a psychic or a deck of cards. I'd rather put the money to something more tangible like a great new book or a fun social event or even a new outfit. Surrender my friend! I pray that my experience will help you and I pray that God does wonders in your life!!! Believe in your heart that this coming year will BE different!! You will defeat the enemy! You will make new habits! Get new hobbies! Find new adventures! REDIRECT the energy you place in those cards to something HEALTHY!! I believe you can do it!! Have faith and surrender your fears to God!!! He is there for you!!

I read this article with the mind of an addict. I just got off of the psychic access website writing a note to a psychic. I've been diagnosed with generalized anxiety and know that I suffer from depression. I've tried praying to overcome my addiction to psychics and I seem to be able to go for about a month and then I turn right around and either go to an automated site for tarot readings or call a psychic if I have more money. It's a cycle I've been trying to break with prayer for years. My husband knows about it and told me if I'm going to spend that much money I may as well be a reader. I have had several tarot decks over the years and in cleansing moments have gotten rid of them and prayed only to buy another deck. To top that off many of my friends read tarot for fun and although they don't take it as seriously as I do they always reintroduce it to me and then I find that I'm hooked again. I'm praying for healing but nothing has penetrated my heart enough and yes I am a Christian. Please don't write anything rude because I'm already ashamed of it. Just sharing for those who aren't as honest about their situation. Great article and I will use it to try to change. That's all anyone can do.

Very well-written. Not only is there danger in the addiction and false savior part that you mentioned--but the spirits that people open the doors to through consulting mediums can become very dangerous! Thanks for writing this.
