And so It Was With Me... Revelation

Sometimes writers distance themselves from religious subjects. Religion is still taboo to speak about. Read about it instead.

Answers to the question immediately may cause people to stop reading. The answer is everybody can get revelation from God if they know how. The following will compare the types of revelation from God and from the other source.

It came to me suddenly, unexpectantly. A wall of thickness and immensity of darkness...

The Dark and The Light

It came to me suddenly, unexpectantly. A wall of thickness and immensity of darkness encompassed me so creating uncontrollable breathlessness without inhaling the vapors of the void of light. By some powerful force, my soul sank, no, lurched into the nothingness manifested before my face as the hope in my soul flickered and faded into the azure abyss. Never before had emptiness ruled my consciousness and heart as did this hueless encroachment on my spirit enslaved forcibly defying my eternal agency! Ruinous imaginations and hopeless defeat attacked my spirit--suffocating life by degrees--almost snuffing out any hope of light left in the annals of my soul.

Then came a glow above my head that gingerly lighted upon my soul, washing upon me with gentle warmth and vivid care infusing each part of my existence until wrapped in the satin furrows of bliss and peace past the telling of the tongue by words or song. Luminous joy glided toward the core of my existence with the invitations of my beating heart welcoming the feelings of love of a thousand understandings, inclusion of a million invitations, and peace past numbering safely purifying my existence—culling away the nothingness to a point that I barely could imagine it ever existed in the same realm of reality with the light so pure and burning--penetrating warming fires of hope, brimstone of peace, and idyllic awakening of ever-expanding joy.

Then came a glow above my head that gingerly lighted upon my soul...

Those words come as close as I have the ability without a dictionary or thesaurus to describe the spirit of the devil and its removal by the Spirit of God in my life when I discovered the reality of God as did Joseph Smith Junior that spring morning in 1820.

Alma the Younger, in the Book of Mormon has a similar experience prior to his conversion to Jesus Christ as did Saul before he became Paul as described in the New Testament of the Holy Bible. Before the theophanic experience of Joseph commenced, he described the same thing in the Pearl of Great Price officially recorded in his history. Moses described his encounter in the same record letting him gage between Jehovah and Lucifer. The purpose of such experiences is to leave indelible impressions upon our spirits differentiating the glory and the lack of glory offered to followers of virtue-truth-light and partakers of evil-hate-darkness.

A testimony of Jesus Christ is the spirit of prophecy because it asserts that He is the Savior of the world prophesying that He will return and fulfill all that the ancient prophets from Adam to Russell M. Nelson promised He would.

Light of the World

Doctrine and Covenants is a powerful reminder of the perfection of God and His purpose to lift every creature from this mortal world to the celestial world of His burnings of glory through His Son Jesus Christ. John testified with apostolic power recording the words of Christ to Nicodemus that

God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved. He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that LIGHT is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than LIGHT because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the LIGHT, neither cometh to the LIGHT, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the LIGHT, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. [John 3:15-21]

Darkness and Light.

Evil and Right.

We tend not to want our faults pointed out. We have an estimation of ourselves leaving us to espouse favored ideas or standards we match in our head. Jesus challenged Nicodemus to look beyond the darkness in which we shroud our minds to the light of truth so that a positive change can occur within us, repentance.

We weave our lives through mortal existence experiencing varying degrees of both forces, one pulling and pushing the other inviting and persuading us towards a goal. One desires misery for us in life besides eternal death and the other encourages, promises opportunity and eternal joy.

Works of Dark and Light

When the extremes between the two are vivid, we run toward the light. When subtlety prevails we sit like frogs in a pot warmed by degrees until the varying changes in temperature boil us to death unawares or warm us to joy in full knowledge.

Paul taught the Celts referred to as Galatians in the New Testaments who settled in regions about what is presently called Turkey that there are fruits of the Spirit of God and fruits of the flesh or carnal things of the world that represent darkness. The Saints of Galatia were of the Gentile nations and had been introduced to Judaism from other Saints who insisted that to be true followers of the new sect of Judaism, Christianity, they must submit to the Law of Moses [1],

Paul wrote them saying,

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. [Galatians 5:19-21]

All such things create darkness by degrees until the entire body is full of darkness and is darkness unless a change occurs.

Paul then in stark contrast to the evil designs of things of the world wrote to the Celtic Saints that,

...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such, there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. [Galatians 5:22-24]

Paul educated the Celts of the contrast of the saving power of the Law of Moses compared to the Grace of Christ since the law convicts all to damnation without equivocation. The Grace of Jesus, which fulfills or completes the end of the Law, lifts all who accept it to the light where the Law is justified in His sacrifice giving way for the Saints to enjoy the encompassing peace of virtue.

Three witnesses here inform us how to judge if things come from God or the devil.

The Right Way

A way to judge if something is right and of God is offered by Mormon in the Book of Moroni in The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ also when he instructed through his son,

...that which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God. [Moroni 7:13]

Jesus Christ spoke directly to us in the Doctrine and Covenants when He told Oliver Cowdery how to discern the truth of things, a test that turns out to work for every situation and for every person. Jesus revealed,

Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground. [Doctrine and Covenants 8:2-3]

Three witnesses here inform us how to judge if things come from God or the devil. Paul tells us the feelings associated with things from God, Mormon tells us what those things lead us to do, good things, and Jesus Christ tells us it is all from the Holy Ghost whose influence will dwell in our hearts, which is “the spirit of revelation.” Modern Christ speaks. Let’s take it and be open to the revelations of heaven today!

See if the words here, if heeded, lead you to a more intimate relationship with our Father in Heaven.
