A Life Like No Other!

A Life Like No Other!

Imagine going through life with no concept that you’re special. Without any idea that you were created for purpose and a destiny that awaits you. Perhaps, you’ve never been told that you have a life like no other - that the footsteps you take are ordained for you, and you alone.

Such was the life of J.T. Now I’m sure you’re wondering who is J.T., and that is my point exactly.

J.T. was someone I met at work. He was young, pleasant, and with far more beyond the surface than I realized. He was a new employee and worked as a janitor. He went about his tasks quietly, trying diligently not to disturb anyone. I rarely heard him talk until one day I entered the dispatcher’s room. There J.T. and others were in the midst of a conversation about God. I was waiting for a fax when I heard him say he was an Atheist. I listened for a bit, and asked him what he meant by that. He explained he just didn’t believe God existed and was quite satisfied with his beliefs. He indicated he came from a large, blended family, both his mother and father divorced a number of times, and he had layers of stepparents; he was one of fourteen children, if you counted all his siblings.

As I looked at J.T., I knew that God was telling me to look closer. J.T. and the others went on talking and the conversation switched to tattoos. I couldn’t help but think it was a strange transition, from Atheist to tattoos. If that wasn’t enough, J.T. chimed in about his body piercings and suddenly the Spirit of God said - That’s it! Now, looking at J.T., it was impossible to see this graphically tatted and pierced image he spoke of. He was impeccably dressed and there was no indication of what was beneath his long sleeves. I looked at him and, in a moment, God revealed the heart of the matter. J.T. desperately wanted to do anything that would get him noticed. He was searching for something that would make him unique - he wanted a life like no other.

I told him he was entitled to his beliefs, but even the devil himself knows there’s a God. I also told him before he was formed in his mother’s womb – God knew him and loves him with an unfailing love. I explained it really didn’t matter what he put on the outside, it could never change the fact that God loves him for who He created him to be - that no matter how many children his parents had, there would only ever be one J.T. I told him I believed the tattoos and piercings were so that he could be unique and explaining that he actually already was. I went on to say there has never been, nor would there ever be another J.T., that he is a one-of-a-kind creation, and that he was meticulously made. In fact, like David, the Bible says in Psalm 139:14 that he is fearfully and wonderfully made. I assured him that God could not care less about his exterior, because He looks at our heart. I don’t think J.T. blinked the entire time I was talking. I didn’t know exactly what God was doing, but I was certain He was doing something.

I gathered my papers and went back to my office. A little later, J.T. stepped in to elaborate about his piercings and tattoos. I listened, certain he wanted to add shock value. When he finished, I simply said, “That’s nice,” and went back to my papers. He left, only to return a short while later to let me know the next time he was scheduled to work, he would wear his piercings, and detailed the full array of chains and spikes I could expect to see. I told him I looked forward to seeing them, and I returned to my paperwork. A little while later J.T. returned and before he could say anything, I asked him if he wanted to know what I was looking at, and he did. I told him when I looked at him, I was looking at an incredibly delightful book, which was written by the very hand of God. The intro to the book was fascinating, and I simply couldn’t wait to see how the story would unfold. I told him I serve an awesome God and I believed He had amazing plans for him. I went on to say, as intriguing as the beginning of this book was – I expect the end of the story would be far greater than the initial chapters.

J.T. left and I didn’t see him for a few days. The next time we met, he told me I would not believe what happened to him. Explaining someone invited him to a church festival. I smiled when he told me he decided to go and check it out. Several days passed and he returned with another incredible story. This time he was invited to a church, of all things. I responded to his astonishment with a subdued “That’s nice,” and kept walking to my office. Later that day J.T. appeared in my doorway to tell me he decided accept the invitation and go to church, but he was dying his hair jet black, spike it on top of his head, wear black lipstick and paint his fingernails black. I looked up from my papers, paused and said, “Wear it; it’ll look good on you!” J.T. left in complete frustration and was determined to go just the way he described.

I didn’t see him for a few days. The next time we met, he rushed in and said, “You won’t believe what happened!” I put my pen down and and said, “I’m sure I will. What happened?” He explained he went to the church looking just the way he said he would. He walked in with his hair spiked straight up on his head, with black lipstick and black fingernails; he even wore a short sleeve shirt so his tattoos would be prominently displayed. He said never before in his entire life had he seen anything like that service. I asked if they talked about Jesus and if there was praise and worship, trying to quickly access if everything was lined up with the Word of God. He said it was, except once he was in the church he looked around and discovered he wasn’t the ‘biggest freak’ in there. This was J.T.’s description, not mine. He went on to say in utter amazement, that the church he attended was a reformed biker’s church, and most of the people, including the pastor and his wife, had far more tattoos than he did and his were modest compared to theirs.

J.T. gave his life to God that day and asked Jesus to be his Lord and Savior. I told him that he witnessed, first-hand, the awesome power of God because God orchestrated all that to show him just how much He loves him.

I’m pleased to say that J.T. was no longer an atheist. God’s love and existence were irrefutable. God proved Himself to J.T. far better than I could have ever done with mere words. The truth is, I never knew that church existed, but God knew exactly where to send J.T.

So what about you? If you’re like J.T. and not sure there is a God, or if He even knows you exist, let me tell you, God is real, and He loves you with an unfailing love. No matter what you’ve ever done or how you’ve done it, He loves you still. The best part is you don’t have to take my word for it; you can know Him for yourself. Right now, ask God to show you Who He really is. Allow Him to do for you what He did for J.T. - show you just how much He loves you and that He’s given you a life like no other!

Thank's Betty for your comment. The one thing God taught me through J.T. is when we submit to Him, even our thoughts aren't our own, but He directs us in what to say. I don't think J.T. ever knew how much I was shouting on the inside, as I watched what God was doing.

I can't wait to see who's in the Kingdom because of the work God had for J.T. to do. He really is an Awesome God!

Betty Johansen on February 08, 2011:

Wow, Unleashed Victory, your responses to J.T. were inspired. And your message - a life like no other - is so needed in today's world. An awesome story, an awesome hub!

AMEN and well put... You can never tell what's under someone's coat sometimes (or even what you might find when the Pastor rolls up their sleeves!). All that matters is what is "invisible" or what can't be seen (just like with the Spirit of the Lord), for what is beneath the skin is what counts.

Keep up the great work... Rev.Ted

hemustincrease, you've summed up in a nutshell what I've always desired - to see past the exterior. I know when God saved J.T., there were people that he could reach that most of us couldn't. What an Awesome God we serve! I am so glad you told me about Brandon Heaths song, I'm going to pull it up now. I can't wait to hear it.

hemustincrease on February 04, 2011:

This hub reminds me of Brandon Heaths song “give me your eyes’. Just to be led by the Spirit of God to see all people with His eyes and love them with HIS heart. This was an encouragement for me. Thanks :)

Tamarajo, that's what amazed me the most how God did all that because of His love for J.T. I tried playing it cool but I was in awe of God's amazing power! You hit the nail on the head when you said He seamlessly did it! Thanks for your insight!

Tamarajo on February 04, 2011:

Beautiful story and testimony. All the divine appointments that seemed to flow together seamlessly in a way we could have never thought to orchestrate ourselves.

So glad you were listening to God on the root matters of the situation and how to handle them.

Unleashed Victory (author) on February 04, 2011:

FriendofTruth, I'm thankful that God doesn't look at us the way the world does, but He sees value when we don't even see it ourselves. Thank you for sharing this!
