11 Important Keys to Get Your Prayers Answered

Prayer is a powerful connection between God and anyone. We may have experienced times when our prayers are unanswered or met people who have prayers unanswered and wondered why or what am I doing wrong, or what do I need to do next. We may have notice that certain specific things we pray for are answered within a day, few hours, the next day, week and some other prayers are taking longer to be answered. This may cause us to question why. Here are some important keys to getting your prayers answered.

  1. Develop and Pursue a Personal Relationship with God - if you do not have an ongoing relationship with God, that not only consist of just going to church services or meetings or do not have any idea what I am talking about, then here is how you begin to have a relationship:

As with any relationship or friendship, it takes time to develop a closeness. Pray this prayer to start your journey with God:

Father, I come before you in the name of Jesus. I am a sinner and have done some cruel things that do not make me worthy to come before you. My sins have separated me from you. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins and was resurrected from the dead and paid the punishment for my sins. I now invite Jesus to become my Savior and Lord of my life, and to forgive me of all my sins and to help me from this day forward. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen.

You can start by talking to God everyday at anytime about the details of your life and learning to recognize God's goodness in little ways, big ways and the challenges that may come your way. Get involved in a church that believes and follow the principles of the Bible.

2. Pray to Your Father in Heaven through Jesus Christ. Do not pray to dead relatives or the Virgin Mary or to Jesus. Why!!! Take a look at these verses.

Matthew 6:9-13

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.11 Give us this day our daily bread.12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Why not pray to the Virgin Mary because we must not treat Virgin Mary as an idol or god. She was a simple teenage girl, handmaiden of God that God chose to be the mother of Jesus, this was the plan of God. Why not pray to Jesus? Although Jesus is our Intercessor, High Priest and Advocate, died on the cross, buried and resurrected, we still need to Pray to the Father. Jesus came to reveal the Father. I hear many Christians praying to Jesus, the wrong person in the Godhead (Trinity), and their prayers are not being answered.

3. Work towards Gettting Rid of All the Bitterness and Unforgiveness and Forgive

And when you stand praying, forgive, if you have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Clearly in these verses, before praying, you should forgive. Bitterness separates us from our Heavenly Father, because He is a forgiving merciful God. According to Pastor Henry Wright, author of A More Excellent Way, 'The Kingdom of Bitterness will carry you into apostasy, bondage, disease, insanity and finally into desolation. It is in our nation, our churches, our families and it is in our personal lives.'

There are many other spirits under Bitterness such as Unforgiveness, Resentment, Retaliation, Anger and Wrath, Hatred, Violence and Murder. A sign of Unforgiveness is reminding you of what a person did to you, keeping a record of wrongs.

Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; (Hebrews 12:15)

Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: (Ephesians 4:31)

Learn to Forgive Others- So when you choose to forgive someone right away for how people treated you, those who envied you, gossipped about you, spoke negative things, you are beginning your own process of forgiveness.

Learn to Forgive Yourself - We may mess up at times, say things we shouldn't make wrong decisions because of our human, sinful nature, but if we recognize these things and choose a better way of living, then we should just let go and not hold a record of wrongs towards ourselves and forgive ourselves as God forgives us.

Forgive God- You may blame God for all sort of things, for a bad childhood, financial problems, being sick, being alone, for injustices against you personally.

4. Repent- Repentance is not done just when we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior of our lives, but daily repentance and a lifestyle of repentance is necessary. What does repentance have to with our prayers? Take a look at this verse.

If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: (Psalm 66:18)

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. (II Chronicles 7:14)

As with any relationship in our lives there may be things that can hinder normal communication with a person. As I stated in #3, get rid of all Bitterness, unforgiveness. Next, ask God to search your heart to see of other sins that is causing you to have unanswered prayer. Is it Envy in your heart for someone? Pride and Arrogance? Fear of the future? Sexual Sins? Occultic Activity? Stealing? Lying? Destroying someone's life?

We should not condemn ourselves or accuse ourselves, but do what I John 1:9 says:

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

5. Give Thanks

So many times in prayer, we come with a long list of needs asking the Heavenly Father and fail to come with a grateful heart for the things God already has done. I have done this when I was new to the Christian faith. Then I come across the verses below and thought, I need to thank God for the little things He does daily, for everything I have and then He started to answer the big requests. As you develop a thankful heart, then you can praise God for answering your prayer.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. (Psalm 100:4)

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. (Philippians 4:6)

6. Believe

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever you desire, when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them. (Mark 11:24)

Believing and Having Faith is what helps us succeed in the Christian life and in our journey with God. This is what pleases the heart of God, to believe in Him, believe His Word and trust in His promises. Some of his promises has conditions to them, so we must pay extra attention to them.

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)

7. Humble Yourself and Seek His Face- We must always come to God, not in arrogance, but with a contrite heart showing our need for Him in every area of our lives. Humility is something that God requires us to ourselves.

I Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

We must seek His face, not only what He can do for us. But spend time with Him daily, reading His Word and seeking after Him, as a person and the names of God.

8. Find Bible Verses about the Specific Things You are Praying for

This verse goes along with this principle:

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask what you will, and it shall be done unto you. (John 15:7)

Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. (Psalm 37:4)

What you need to do is find those promises and study and meditate on them until they become real and personal to you. If you need friends, then claim Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 and Proverbs 17:17, if you are struggling with finances, then look at Matthew 6:33, Luke 6:38, Deuteronomy 28:1-14, healing, Psalm 103:2-4, and so much more.

Do not be passive and only depend on Sunday and Wednesday church services to open the Bible. Take time to study the Word of God for yourself, whether it is 20 minutes, 30 minutes or and hour, and find those verses pertaining to your need to remind the Father about in prayer

9. Pray Against Things

If you are probably have been praying for a very long time for finances, healing in your body, salvation for a loved one, success for our children, purpose in your life, resolving conflicts in relationships or something else. As God has a plan, Satan has a plan to. We can see this in the life of Joseph, Jesus, etc.

At times we can pray against the enemy's plan for our lives, pray against debt, accidents, poverty, sickness, fear, unbelief, doubt, evil, rejection,

10. Ask someone to pray with You about your need/pray request

This can be a friend, pastor, group of brothers and sisters in Christ, relative, etc. This is called the prayer of agreement.

Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:19-20)

11. Persevere and Don’t give up

We can learn a lot from the Parable of the Persistent Widow in Luke 18. Some prayers are answered in a day, week, month and some can take years, but through the long period of time, we learn about God, ourselves and life.

Janelle, you make very good points and I believe them. May I suggest that you use the callout format to present your subtitles? It will help them stand out. Just a suggestion, because I like what you write.
