5 Simple Steps to Uncover Your Purpose

June is a Christian whose journey to uncover her purpose gave her the insight needed to share the same with others on the same journey.

To uncover your unique strengths, ask yourself:

  • What do I enjoy doing?
  • What sets me apart from others with little effort?
  • What comes easily to me?

Seeking your life's purpose can be a challenging feat. It comes from a need to answer some of life's big questions. The "why are you are here?", "why were you born?" type of questions. This deep need to get aligned to the sole reason for your existence often leads to deep soul searching. The good news is that you don’t need to search far because your purpose is already within you. You simply need to uncover it.

First, I wish to note the following points:

  • You were not born in order to live a miserable life,
  • God well equipped you to live a happy and prosperous life
  • Did I say that you are “well equipped”? Yes, I did because you are!

Consider the Rules

First, know that there are laws that govern the world; the laws of gravity, electromagnetism, etc, if you plant a seed in fertile ground and water it, it will grow. Now, the same applies to purpose. Your life’s purpose is directly aligned to your special strengths, otherwise known as talents.

We are all equipped with these unique strengths and the laws that see to their success work for all and sundry. It doesn’t matter what race you are, religion, or what corner of the world you hail from, when you apply your efforts to uncovering and strengthening your talents, you will succeed.

How do you uncover Your Unique Strengths?

First, remember I said that none of us was meant to lead a miserable life? Well, your joy is directly linked to your purpose and your purpose is directly linked to your passions, which are the clear indicator of what your unique strengths are.

So, to uncover your unique strengths, ask yourself:

  • What do I enjoy doing?
  • What sets me apart from others with little effort?
  • What comes easily to me?

The answer to this question will easily bring a smile to your face because God programmed you to love your life’s purpose, which equates to your passion.

So, what do you enjoy doing?

Personally, I enjoy a good plotline, be it on-screen or on paper. Once an idea forms in my head, it weaves itself into various plot lines until I pick one that works best and put it down on paper. At times, the flow is so glorious that when I sit down to write the scene in my mind; the story takes its own mind-blowing course. (Only writers will understand what I mean by this. Lol)

I call that anointing because I know for a fact, I do not have a metaphorical box where I store all future story ideas. God is my source and since I am aligned to His purpose for me, as in since I am using my talents as intended, the story ideas are there for me to take as I need. The anointing is like a continuous river flow of favor and provision which will never dry out as long as I am aligned to it. All I need to do is tap into it and a story idea comes to mind.

So again I ask, what do you enjoy doing? By the way, this will not be a new revelation to you. It is something you have known most of your life. I loved reading novels when I was young and I would often find myself a corner where I would then write a simple story based on my fanciful teenage mind. Little did I know that this little hobby would someday be my source of income.

What next?

After narrowing down your strengths/talents, what next? Well, they did not build Rome in a day and neither will you be able to polish your talents and make something of them in a day. To get to a point where you are enjoying the delicious fruits of your uniqueness, you have to put in work. Fret not, this work will not be full of struggle because you already have the basics ingrained in you, all you will be doing is mastering and polishing them up.

When I realized I was meant to be using my talents as a source of income, I wrote an entire 25 chapter story in four weeks using an app on my phone! Note that I had never finished a story before and I had never had the courage to share it with strangers, but this time I had no choice. As I typed my story away on the free app, I eagerly awaited people’s comments. I just wanted someone to tell me that my story was good. I just wanted someone to give me hope.

The first time someone read my story and commented, I was over the moon! She praised my writing and commented on every little thing within the story. Jenifer became a fast friend to me and my heart warms every time I remember her support. This encounter strengthened my resolve to make it as a writer. Each time she and others cheered me on, my confidence grew stronger and so I read and wrote nonstop.

Being a non-native English speaker, I knew I needed to work on my English skills. I would only do so by reading a lot and writing just as much. How outstanding that to polish my language skills, I would need to keep doing what I love best; reading captivating novels! By the end of the following year, I had completed two more stories and was rewriting the first story. However, there was a problem.

Turning the Hobby to Income

Being a stay-at-home mom of two boys with one income was not working out very well and so I needed to earn some money to help with the bills. I had heard of freelance writing but had no clue how to go about it. I was in a desperate position where I know what I am supposed to be doing with my life, but how do I earn while pursuing my passions?

My pastor encouraged me to find someone who would teach me how to work as a freelance writer, and I did. I enrolled in a one-month online course that introduced me to the world of freelancing. I got to learn how the market works, the tips, and tricks, etc. basically, everything I needed to get started. Come January of the following year, I landed a couple of long-term clients and the income started flowing.

Lessons from My Story

  • I had the talent within me.
  • It was aligned with what I loved to do
  • The talent was raw in its original form
  • So, I needed training and to put in work to better it
  • There was a market for my talent
  • All I needed to do was apply myself and get out there ready to learn and share myself.

We all have that special talent within us. There is a place for your skill in the market/world. Do not be afraid to share your uniqueness, because whilst your closest people might not understand you immediately, there are others out there who will marvel at your work. Apply the above steps and I hope my story encourages you on your search.
