3 Ways to Grow Spiritually

Rev. Margaret Minnicks is an ordained Bible teacher. She writes many articles that are Bible lessons.

Most disciples of Christ say they want to grow spiritually but they admit they are just not there yet. It is not as hard as they might think once they do at least three important things. However, they must know what those three things are.

Moses knew what those three things were. Therefore, he helped the Israelites out by telling them in a simplified way how to grow spiritually.

Moses continued speaking to the people of Israel and said, 'Listen carefully now to all these laws God has given you; learn them, and be sure to obey them!' (Deuteronomy 5:1)

Moses had been obedient to God by returning to Egypt to deliver the Hebrews out of slavery from Pharaoh. He had led them through the Red Sea and was leading them through the desert. He knew in order for them to could grow spiritually they had to follow rules.

Moses knew from his first-hand experience with God that spiritual growth involves three things.

  1. Listening
  2. Learning
  3. Obeying

One of those activities is not exclusive of the other two. All three of them must work in conjunction with the other two in order for anyone to grow into an intimate relationship with God.

An ear to listen.

An ear to listen.

1. Listen Carefully

The very first thing Moses told the people he was leading was to listen carefully. Notice that he did not just tell them to listen. He told them to listen carefully. There is a big difference between just listening and listening carefully.

Some people let what they hear go in one ear and out the other. In other words, they might hear but they don't listen carefully to what they hear. Listening is more than just hearing. It is being diligent to absorb and accept information from another.

When a person listens, he doesn't merely hear. Instead, he pays careful attention to what someone is saying. He is not distracted by thinking about something else. Also, listening carefully should be listening to learn something instead of listening with the intent to contradict what is being heard.

2. Learn God's Commands

Learning is an important key to spiritual growth. Learning is the byproduct of careful listening. The Israelites had entered into a covenant with God, and Moses commanded them to hear, learn, and follow His statutes.

Learning is understanding information about God. It is learning what to do and what not to do. At the time of the exodus, no Bibles were available for the Israelites to read and learn what God had to say. Therefore, they had to rely on what Moses told them since he was the one hearing and learning from God.

Moses was in a covenant with God, and he wanted the Israelites to be in a loving covenant as well. That was then, but we also have entered into a covenant with God through Jesus Christ and should follow the same advice Moses gave to the people he was leading.

Obey God's Commands

3. Obey God's Commands

The proof of listening and learning should be obedience. Obeying God's command is putting into action all the things that have been heard and learned.

Obedience is evident that someone has heard and learned from information he has received. In other words, a person must act in according to what he has heard and learned.

Unfortunately, many people sit in church Sunday after Sunday. They hear, but there is not much evidence that they have learned anything at all. There is no proof that they understand what the pastor or Bible teacher taught because they are not growing spiritually.

How To Know You Are Growing Spiritually

Moses' threefold command was for the Israelites as they traveled forty years in the desert following the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night.

The same instructions are for us today because we also have a covenant with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. Therefore, Moses' command to hear, learn and obey is just as pertinent to disciples of Christ today as it was for the Israelites thousands of years ago.

Those instructions will help us grow spiritually if we put them into practice. Not only will we see a difference in ourselves, but others will notice it as well. Then we can be like Moses and give them the same three charges to listen carefully, to learn from what they have heard and then show proof by being obedient.

Awesome Hub, Margaret!

I'm proud to say that I'm growing in all areas-now. I think my problem was not listening to all of the signs that were beating me upside the head lol. I was so busy trying to prove the haters were wrong about me that I didn't hear God speaking to me, through them.

I didn't understand that there are times when God needs you to step aside and let him drive. I always thought that you can achieve all things through him, as long as you do your part. I didn't realize when "my part" was over. I didn't understand why I can't failing in everything that I tried to do. I thought it meant "try harder."

Since I wasn't listening carefully, I wasn't able to learn nor obey.
