I search the scriptures to discover scriptural truth and the deep things of God.
In life, there are necessities. These necessities command inelastic demand. Literally, we can't survive without them. They are the necessary, seasoned ingredients for our physical survival. Some of these necessities include air, water, food, clothing, shelter, light, to mention but a few. They are indispensable and extremely necessary for our survival. The same thing applies to our spiritual survival and completeness as believers of Christ. There are some things that are necessary (prerequisites) for our survival as followers of Christ. These necessities include blood, faith and Jesus Christ. Let's look at them one by one and see how necessary these are in our Christian journey.
1. Without the shedding of blood there's no forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 9:22)
In the verse above, the Bible makes it clear that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. This is the first thing we can't do without as Christians. In other words, if Jesus had not shed His blood by going to the cross, there's no forgiveness of sins.
One May Ask, Why Blood?
The Lord said to Moses in Leviticus 17: 11, "For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it for you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls, by reason of the life." This passage perfectly explains why blood is involved in the forgiveness process. Now, sin does not only draw us away from God, it really kills us. So for life to be restored, there must be some kind of blood shedding. This parallels the popular saying that, "without the shedding of blood, there's no revolution." For one thing to be established another must be given up.
Now blood is very significant. And it is symbolic in the Bible. It portrays the lamb of God was slain for the remission of sins. Do you know that the red colour in the flag of most countries symbolizes blood? It symbolizes the blood of legends and forefathers who fought for a significant event or change in that particular country. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Christ has paid the ransom by shedding his blood for us. This has replaced the killing of bulls and goats on the altar to atone for sins—this Bible describes as impossible (Hebrews 10:4). The blood of Christ is the only perfect ransom.
2. Without faith it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6).
The second thing you can't do without as a Christian is faith. Faith is believing and proving what you believe by your works. Faith is the conviction of what you believe in. Now, Jesus Christ has done His part of the salvation process by shedding His blood on the cross. It left with us to believe this by having faith in Him. Faith is having personal trust in Christ Jesus. Thus, after receiving Jesus Christ, we prove to be Christians by our works of faith by entirely depending on Him. You can't do anything by yourself to make your way to heaven. It's by grace through faith that we are saved; not by works lest any man should boast.
Before entering a commercial vehicle, do you ask the driver about his experience or papers? You don't, but you sit comfortably believing that he would take you to your destination. That's faith. We have faith to believe and prove our faith in the driver by entirely putting our lives into his hands. This is what God demands from us too. To completely rely on Him. Remember without faith it is impossible to please Him.
3. Without me you can do nothing (John 15:5b)
In John 15, Jesus taught His disciples about the vine and the branches. He describes Himself as the true vine and the disciples He describes as the branches. And as the branches cannot exist and survive without the vine, so are they (the disciples) without Him (Jesus). Jesus said without Him, we can't do anything. In other words, you can't be what you claim to be—a Christian—without Jesus Christ.
The Apostle Peter said in Acts 4:12, "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Without Jesus Christ, the son of God, there is no salvation. Jesus is the only person who had ever declared, "I am the way, the truth and the life; no one goes to the Father, but by me." Without Jesus Christ, there is no salvation. Without Jesus Christ we can't do anything as believers. Without Jesus Christ who is the truth, there's no knowing. Seek Him and find Him, and He will forever change your life for good.
The conclusion of the whole matter is this: Believe that the blood shed by Jesus Christ on the cross of Calvary, some 2000 years ago was to pay the ransom for the remission of sins. And there's no forgiveness of sins without the shedding of blood. Jesus Christ has paid the ultimate debt and we've got to believe in His name through faith, for without Him, we can do nothing; absolutely nothing.
Reflect on this quote by Immanuel Kant:
"We are not rich by what we own but by what we can do without."
