10 Highlights From the September 2015 LDS Women's Session of Conference

I am a child of God with infinite worth just like you are. I'm also a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

We Are Created to Have Joy

2 Nephi 2:25 says: Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy. This has always been one of my favorite scriptures, because it reminds me that one of my purposes here on the earth is to be joyful.

This doesn't mean that we're never going to go through any trials or difficulties, but it does mean that as we choose to have a positive attitude and focus on love, service, gratitude, and most importantly our Savior, Jesus Christ, we can have joy.

It is easy to get caught up in the stress and the busyness of life, but life is so much more enjoyable when we choose to see and share joy.

I love this simple truth that Elder Uchtdorf was able to put so eloquently. Truly, "God didn't design us to be sad. He created us to have joy!"

  • 10 Reasons to Be Happy Today
Do you ever have one of those days where you just feel like complaining and moping around? Here are ten reasons to leave that moping and complaining behind, and be happy today!

Choosing to Live Life With Purpose Brings Joy

There is something powerful about consciously choosing to create a meaningful life.

It can be tempting to give in to boredom and exhaustion and spend our time lazing around doing things that aren't very important, but when we choose to do something that matters, we find true joy.

We are here on earth to do much more than hang out. We are here to let our light shine and make life better for ourselves and others.

What a difference it would make if we all recognized how important it is to "find out why" we were born.

We Each Have a Spark of Divinity Within Us

We are all God's children, brothers and sisters of a loving Heavenly Father and Mother. Because we have a diving heritage, there is a spark (and I would venture to say even a large burning fire) of divinity within us.

In Sister Wixom's talk she encouraged us to ask God if we are really his beloved children if we ever have a time that we doubt our own divinity.

We are more similar to our heavenly parents than we think, and it's time that we quit playing small.

I love this quote from Maryanne Williamson:

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

I truly believe that what we see in others is a reflection of what we see in ourselves. As we begin to more fully recognize the divinity in ourselves, we will see the divinity in everyone around us.

We Were Meant to Do More Than Just Exist

The more that we recognize the divinity within us the more that we will realize that we were meant to do much "more than just exist."

What a blessing it is that we have agency and ability to create the life that we want to have. We can make the world a more beautiful place by exercising our influence.

It's amazing how even the smallest acts of kindness and service have a rippling effect that often reaches out much further than we ever realize.

  • Live Life With Your Eyes Open
We live in a world full of distractions. Don't miss out on the wonders that are right in front of you. Live a purposeful life by opening your eyes to the opportunities and blessings you have today.

This beautiful video shown at the women's conference really touched my heart.

We Are Always Valuable to Our Heavenly Father

What a blessing it is to know that we should be looking up for validation rather than comparing ourselves to the people all around us.

I think that now more than ever, it is tempting for people to determine their personal value by the validation that they receive from those around them.

Mom's stress out about whether they are as good at making Pinterest crafts into realities as their friends are. People are addicted to Facebook because of the excitement they feel when they see that someone else has "liked" their most recent status update.

It's easy to get caught up in all of this, but it is important to remember that none of it really matters.

We are Heavenly Father's children. We are of infinite worth to Him, and it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks.

Blessed With Sacred Gifts

It is very common in our society for people to take their bodies for granted forgetting that "our bodies are sacred gifts from our Heavenly Father."

People complain about their bodies, harshly judge their bodies, and often mistreat (or allow others to mistreat) their bodies on a regular basis instead of protecting them like the sacred treasures that they are.

When someone gives you a gift that you treasure, you treat it accordingly. We need to do the same thing for our bodies.

They are beautiful and miraculous, and we need to do everything that we can to keep them healthy, strong, clean, and pure.

Cherish Virtue

I was grateful for Sister Reeve's reminder of the promise in Doctrine and Covenants 121:45-46 that says that if we let virtue garnish our thoughts unceasingly, the Holy Ghost will be our constant companion.

The constant companionship of the Holy Ghost is an amazing blessing.

We live in a world where the media and even the people around us are often far from virtuous, but we are blessed with the agency to decide who and what we will expose ourselves to.

There is a lot of dirtiness and evil in the world, but there is also a lot of purity and goodness in the world.

Seek out the purity and goodness, and you will be blessed to have the Holy Ghost as your guide as you do.

We Can Give Other's a Glimpse of Heaven

What a beautiful thought! We can help bring a little piece of Heaven to the people around us, and all we have to do is love others the way that Christ loves them.

Don't feel bad if you feel like you are only doing little things to make a difference.

Through small and simple acts of kindness and love, you are bringing Heaven to someone else, and while a smile or a quick "hello" might seem like a little thing to you, the piece of Heaven that you delivered is a huge thing to someone else.

Another beautiful video about love and friendship from women's conference

Pushing Back the Dark

I love the idea that righteousness emanates out to the world as we do what God wants us to do.

When I think about this it reminds me of the sunrise and how the sunlight that starts out seeming small gradually emanates across the whole sky until there is no darkness left.

As we make a conscious decision to serve the Lord, our influence spreads and touches the whole world.

There's enough darkness in the world. Let's fill it with light!

I really enjoy this song about how we can do our part to let our light shine.

Live in the Present

What are you doing right now? I mean now? I mean now? The seconds just keep ticking away, and each second builds upon the last one to eventually create eternity.

We believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ brings eternal joy, but I think it's important to not push that eternal joy too far into the future.

Forever is a long time in the future, but it's also right now.

It's time to take a look at the now and decide whether or not we are creating the eternity that we are hoping for.

Mark Richardson from Utah on October 29, 2019:

Thank you for your article. Your spirit shines brightly even through an article. Women are awesome.

On a lighter note, I always feel like a spy when I read/see/listen to any of women's sessions. The womens sessions always say how wonderful women are (which is very true). To me, it's almost comical that during the Priesthood sessions, its as if all the talks say: "Brethren! We've got to do better!" (Which is also true :o) )

Mother in Israel-My sister in law in 38 and single and she has been a blessing in my children's lives.

The Sisters in Zion video-I believe it is harder for adults to make friends. We put up walls.

Rebecca Young (author) from Renton, WA on October 03, 2015:

I agree that we are all have God's light in us. It's unfortunate that so many people forget or fail to recognize the divinity within themselves.

Carolyn Fields from South Dakota, USA on October 03, 2015:

I wish I could remember where I read this originally, but I will share it anyway - just not claiming it as my idea. Our bodies are composed of molecules and atoms. What we know from science, is that those atoms are moving rapidly all the time, and that there is space and light between them. Lots of it. I have come to think of this as the light of God, present all the time in our very own bodies. Thank you for sharing your experiences from the conference.

Rachel L Alba from Every Day Cooking and Baking on October 02, 2015:

Hi Rebecca, Yes, I agree, that God wants us to live a joyful live. Serving and loving such an awesome God should be joyful. Who else loves us as much as our Lord, Jesus Christ. Thanks for bring this to light. I enjoyed your hub.

Blessings to you.
