Last Night I Dreamt Of Our Unique Friendship

l Dreamt of You Last Night.

l dreamt of you last night, as l quite often do

When l´ve dreamed the same old dream, my day is filled with you.

l cannot move those pale blue eyes, from right in front of my mind.

You´re gazing down at me as if it were yesterday,

And when l wake, you´re there.... as large as life you´re here with me,

And for the day., All day you´ll be.

l loved you like a brother, it hurt you that l did,

Oh, you loved me so. l know, l know, but the love l had for you,

was not that of a lover, . That kind of love l had reserved, l´m sorry, for another.

Where are you now? l wish l knew.

l Hope you are well and happy,

The solid rock of my youth, you were,Always there for me.

My teenage moods, and tantrums, flirtatious ways with others,

Yet you, my love, always there, nothing phased you....

Oh Those cool blue eyes are piercing  me, l never meant to hurt you,

And yet  l  surely did. !

My treasure from a tinsel world,

l  called you once and that you are.

A huge part of my life ., How old were we?

Aged 4 or 5 , Kindergarten,  jelled together..

Our friendship was unique, to last from tiny tots

through school to teens  to adults..

Always friends but sad for you, you wanted more.

But l loved you like a brother.

l dreamt of you last night and tears are flowing from me,

How clear you were inside my dream,

How close to me , today you seem.

Oh! Dear old friend l love you still, you know l always did.,

But not the way that you loved me.,

From romance l always hid.

The strength of love l felt for you,was not lessened by its nature,

You were the best friend in the world to me,

protected me, defended me, You knew me like no other.

You knew my faults, my darkest secrets,,yet you loved me still.

Oh! My dear friend , those pale blue eyes, were honesty itself,

and there l saw them  just last night gazing down  at me with love,

Just once more to see you, if  only l knew where,

to look for you, oh where are you?

l heard you mother died, courageous woman of 95.

So sure was she that we would marry, My father felt the same,

But l loved you like a brother, l wouldn´t play the game.

No point in us pretending, l could not be your wife.

So unfair to you.

It would not have been unending,

But our friendship is, it´s passed the test,

The test of time, so long.........

l just wish l could remember when?, why?

Are you gone?

l don´t remember losing you, . We didn´t lose eachother.

Did we gradually fade away to different lives.?

Go different ways?.

Now l only see you in my dreams

The dreams are gold to me.

l see those eyes so clear and blue,

and feel as close as l ever did to you,

My special YOU.

Good to see you and happy that you liked this one, Neil. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.

great poem -- so true - "true friends" simply ALWAYS are friends even after years of no contact.. it amazes me -- you captured it beautifully.

That comment means a lot to me Epi.,

When l was younger l always tried to write in a more cryptic fashion. l couldn't put myself 'out there' so to speak, because it made me feel vulnerable.

l had hearfelt poetry hidden in a drawer for years.

your comments always encourage me., to just write the truth from my heart. Thank you so much

..yes as I always say to any writer young or old - new or seasoned - if you write from your heart then the mind will always follow - and you certainly demonstrate that poetic equation here with the skill of a seasoned writer and one whose words touch our hearts over and over again!

Very nicely written Dim Flaxenwick. :) It sounds like a friendship I've had in the past and the results are similar to what you expressed here, so I can relate. Thank you for sharing. :)
