Which Hair Color Do Women Find More Attractive On Men?

I'm here with all of the hot gossip, current trends and those beauty secrets that you need to feel and look your best!

What makes a guy attractive?

The wonderful thing about attraction is that there will always be someone who will find you appealing.

Doesn't matter whether you are fat, skinny blond or dark someone somewhere will take one look at you and think wow!

How many times have you looked at a guy and thought yes that's the one for me!

But why? Was it his smile, his body shape or something else?

Well I will tell you. Nine times out of ten it will be the color of his hair. Its a fact that all women have a preference for a certain shade of hair color.

Dimples and more!

We women tend to go for different personality traits than guys. Whereas a man will go for beauty, women choose humor over looks. If a guy has a sense of humor then he is in with a chance.

There is nothing more attractive than seeing a man with a grin as wide as his face, dimples and laugh lines. It beats every other type of attraction.

But we are not talking about personality at this point. We are looking at something subtle that most people notice subconsciously.

So what is it that catches the eye? Well let's take a look at the one thing that stands out the most.

Hair color.

“He looked good, like sin in a suit.”

— Melissa Marr

Hair color.

Did you know, the very first thing a woman will notice on a man is their hair color?

They may not be aware of it when they are staring at the hunk in the corner of the bar, but yes hair color is top score for attractiveness.

Obviously the style of hair goes a long way to make a girl look twice too!

But there are really strong statistics that states one color does stand out from the crowd so to speak.

But which one? And why? Let's take a look.

Dark brown and black attract!

According to various polls and asking loads of friends the same question it seems that one hair color stands above the rest.

The second choice is rather unexpected!

It doesn't surprise me that dark hair comes top of the poll, as its said that dark haired men have an average of 10 dates a month. And black hair comes a close second with 7 dates.

But here's the thing, most of us would automatically assume that blond hair would come a close second. But that isn't the case.

Red had a lot more votes than blond! Surprised? Yes completely!

Blonds get around 3 dates a month, red hair manages four. So, somehow a guy with red hair fairs much better than a blond. Well who knew?

Let's take a look at why.

Dark haired man

Dark haired man

Tall dark and handsome.

Dark haired men are more popular than other hair colors because they come across as friendly trustworthy and kind. Of course it does all depend on what part of the world you live in.

This is based on a cosmopolitan City like London and New York. If you live in Norway or Sweden a lot of men are probably more blond than dark.

Of course brown and black hair is much more familiar to most of us than say a real blond. People tend to presume that if someone is really blond then they are likely to be from another country and may not know your culture and language well.

Purely psychological but tends to make sense. But then again someone with a foreign accent does sound very sexy!

Blond blonde male

Blond blonde male

50 Shades of blond!

So what about blond men? And why would they be bottom of the survey? Well there's a number of reasons and the main one being that blonds tend to come across as, well a bit of a flirt! They flutter from one girl to the next and are deemed to be unreliable!

Hey don't blame me guys! Just going with the majority! But to be fair I do think its probably got something to do with TV and Film.

If you think about it nearly every single 'cad' in films are usually blond. Maybe its had an influence in real life?

Of course it could be something as simple as the fact that there are more dark haired guys around compared to blond. The familiar will always win out.

Way to go reds!

But why would red hair be so successful? There is a theory that Prince Harry of Britain has something to do with it! Let's face it he is the cutie of the Royal Family!

The strange thing is a few years ago red haired men were always regarded as short tempered and very surly. It seems they have been given a reprieve. And thank goodness for that!

I do believe there is a serious reason for this. My dad had red hair and contrary to popular belief men with red or 'carrot' hair are not all fiery.

My dad was as soft as butter to his family. In fact the only time I cried when I was little was because my dad had yelled at me for being naughty! It was so unusual!

Considering how naughty I was as a child this was a one off!

You would never have believed that my dad had loads of medals for his time in the Army. He was so quiet.

So my point is, red haired men are faithful loyal and loving. Proof is in the pudding so to speak.

A quick look at face shapes.

Wide set eyes do if for some ladies, and others prefer dark lashes and blue or brown eyes.

The face has to look manly. Firm jaw squarish face, note I said squarish. Too square is going too far.

If a guy is 'pretty' and come on ladies we all love a bit of pretty male! Then that can do it! For me, yes for me....sorry where was I?

But, there is a problem with pretty. It can show petulance and deceit. Damn! lol!

But sometimes a softer face can be all that we want in a guy. That shows warmth and love.

Eyes are the windows of the soul. Large dark eyes are a must for me but narrower eyes show maturity.

Pale eye lashes and eyebrows. Um. Not for me but why is that? Well its all to do with hair color.

But I digress......!

Long or short?

I did a quick survey of my own with online friends and...

I got some pretty funny comments which I will share with you guys!

Nicole said - dark brown to black (gray peppered in is sexy too!) always liked darker hair and gray shows maturity.

Petra said that she agreed with Nicole and.....

Molly told me that - I've always been partial to red and brown, or better yet, redish-brown.

Suzanne said - Depends on the man.

Richard not wanting to be left out! stated.....Hell, at my age I'm just lucky to have hair!

Which did amuse me!

Nellieanna said - There is no hair better and greater than thick, healthy silver hair on a man!

Alexandra told me - I've always liked dark hair on a blue-eyed man, but married blond men (yes, plural) !

Bobbi said - I like a man who does not dye his hair--I like everything natural and if he doesn't have hair--that is fine too.

Dianna claimed - Since I'm in my upper years, salty gray

Mary said Blond and

Rasma said dark brown.

And last but not least. long as there's hair...what the heck? No fat bald guys for me!

Thanks Jackie...I think!

Gray is okay!

Gray grey hair is okay. Men come in all shapes and sizes. And so does hair. all are different, all are unique but all are attractive.

So what can be seen by this survey? Well yes dark haired men do come out on top, but blonds and reds definitely have their fans too.

Where you surprised at the results of red haired guys? I was, but in a nice way. In fact I am chuffed to bits to think red is holding its own!

So to all those people who laugh at reds, well those reds got the last laugh!

On a serious note just remember guys, there will always be a lady out there who fancies the pants of you whether you are dark haired, blond red or bald!

Are bald men attractive? Or do you prefer yours to have hair in all the right places?! Recent surveys show a surprising result that answers this question. Is your man a slaphead or a hunk? You decide!

Thanks Tim, always good to hear from you.

Tim Truzy from U.S.A. on February 22, 2019:

Hi, Nell,

Got the dark brown covered. Now, I know the truth: Love is in the hair not in the air. (lol)

I was surprised at blonds ranking so low. But I've know several red head gentlemen who were kind-hearted like your father was. I think they just got a bad rap over time.

I read this article to get some idea about the truth of hair and men, and I was pleasantly surprised.

You always have your facts and act together, Nell.

Great work.

Your work is fine reading.

Much respect and admiration,

Nell Rose (author) from England on October 03, 2017:

Hi Dianna, good luck and enjoy!

Freya Cesare from Borneo Island, Indonesia on September 20, 2017:

Hi, Nell.

Indeed it does all depend on what part of the world you live in. But I think I am agree with Richard; Nothing better than a man who will still have hair at his twilight days. hehe.

It's been long time not active around hubpages; I miss your funny stories. ^^

Nell Rose (author) from England on July 23, 2017:

lol! I am sure he does Peggy! thanks for reading, nell

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on July 23, 2017:

This was fun to read and I see I voted with the majority who chose dark and short hair. My hubby of almost 47 years now has some hair left on the sides and back of his head with a bald top. It is mostly gray. He still looks great to me!

Nell Rose (author) from England on July 11, 2017:

LOL! thanks Ziyena, men just fascinated me, hair or not! LOL! cheers

ziyena from the Somewhere Out There on July 10, 2017:

Definitely Auburn ... like Gerard Butler lol

Didn't realize you could write so much about a man's hair color.

I guess it's only fair as much coverage as we women get. Thanks Nell for making me smile

Nell Rose (author) from England on July 10, 2017:

Hi Coffee, yes me too! but long hair gets me too! lol! thanks for reading.

Louise Powles from Norfolk, England on July 09, 2017:

Thanks Chitrangada, yes you are so right! personality is much more important. Thanks as always.

Chitrangada Sharan from New Delhi, India on June 17, 2017:

What an interesting read and I am sorry I missed reading it earlier!

You have presented different point of views in such an interesting way.

For me TDH has always been attractive as far as physical attraction is concerned. I was fascinated by the romantic Mills and Boon novels in my younger days.

But actually it's the intelligence and confidence in a man in addition to his compassionate nature that attracts me more.

Interesting to read other opinions in your wonderful hub!

Thank You for sharing!

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 31, 2017:

Thanks DDE, yes I prefer dark hair too! but then!

Devika Primić from Dubrovnik, Croatia on May 29, 2017:

I prefer dark hair. Interesting and gave me something to think about my man.

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 26, 2017:

Thanks shauna, sorry for the delay in answering, I never saw the comment. Yes as I get older I find myself attracted to grey, thanks for reading.

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on May 23, 2017:

I love a dark-haired man with blue eyes. Now that I'm older and have many shades of gray in my hair, I'm also attracted to salt and pepper or silver. I agree with Nellieanna, there's nothing more attractive than a thick head of silver hair. Can you say Kenny Rogers?

This was a fun read, Nell. Thanks for bringing a bright spot to my work day!

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 18, 2017:

Thanks Vellur glad you liked it, nell

Nithya Venkat from Dubai on May 16, 2017:

Well, well there is so much in colors! Had fun reading but as you say, "there will always be a lady out there who fancies the pants of you whether you are dark haired, blond red or bald!" Oh yes, I totally agree.

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 13, 2017:

Hi Flourish, how amazing! Just goes to show how cliche'd cake makers are! Yes blond men are lovely, I tend to go for long haired dark, or black. Thanks so much for reading.

FlourishAnyway from USA on May 12, 2017:

I had read this but must've gotten distracted and forgotten to comment. I enjoy blonde headed fellas like Brad Pitt. My husband is blonde and when we got married I couldn't find a wedding cake topper that featured a groom with blonde hair and a bride with brunette hair (it was reverse). We went with swans instead.

Nell Rose (author) from England on May 10, 2017:

Thanks Nadine, lol! glad you liked it.

Dora Weithers from The Caribbean on April 26, 2017:

Somewhat surprised that people will consider characteristics like hair color in their decision to like a person; but then, my favorite men on this page are those with gray. I wonder why. Seriously though, your article is insightful and fun.

Nell Rose (author) from England on April 22, 2017:

LOL! thanks qucksand! I am sure it looks awesome!

quicksand on April 22, 2017:

Right now my hair follicles are taking a well deserved annual rest, thanks to a device known as a razor!

In a couple of weeks when the hair begins to re-appear, there will be an even mix of black and white.

When two more weeks pass, there will be full blooded "L'oreal Attack!"

Happy April Holidays!

Cute Hub, Nell! I'll go with blond, darkish blonde, medium length, thank you!

Interesting survey! I thought I like black hair because my father had black hair.

A man with dark hair looks stronger than a man with light hair. At least through my eyes. Lol!

LOL! thanks Peg! I bet your hubby will be pleased as punch when his hair grows and he tells them see? thanks as always.

Peg Cole from North Dallas, Texas on April 18, 2017:

This was funny and educational as well as entertaining. As a former barber, I like all kinds of hair color and it seems I even had a bald man friend at one time as well as several dark haired ones and a blond with blue eyes - Of course, that's been years ago.

My hubby has been growing out his thick black hair, I guess to prove to his coworkers that he doesn't use color on it. He's no spring chicken but I'm not sure the hippy comeback is going to fly. Anyhow, I enjoyed reading this article.

Dianna Mendez on April 18, 2017:

My heart stopped when I saw Josh Holloway! He would look good in any color of hair. I prefer dark brown in general, but a dignified older gray is also attractive. Thanks for the fun read, Nell!

Mary Strain on April 18, 2017:

Fun poll Nell! And count me one of the minority. Blond guys rule!

Mary Wickison from USA on April 18, 2017:

Well, those stats surprised me.

Fun read though. At my age, any man who has his own hair and teeth are ahead of the game.

Nell Rose (author) from England on April 18, 2017:

LOLOLO! Paula you always make me laugh so much! You know what they say! You may be on a diet but you can still look at the menu! forget that group and go for the ones above! thanks for the laugh!

LOL! Bill! now you are fine just the way you are! Bev got her guy so that's all that matters! thanks as always.

Nell Rose (author) from England on April 18, 2017:

Thanks Ruby, I love men with ponytails too! but usually dark guys. And yes why do they cut it to make it so boring when its lovely and thick hair?

More importantly. WHERE are they?? Good Golly Miss Molly, I need oxygen. Who's looking at what color their hair is?? Brown, blonde, red, ...HUH? Yeah, they're all FINE with me, Nell! I just wanna run my fingers through their hair....and look into those hypnotic, sexy, bedroom eyes...and.....Oops, I just passed out for a second there! I think I was hyperventilating! WOW!

awww shucks, Nell....all that incredible beauty and then I get to the picnic table of old white-haired.bald know, my age bracket. Sure, go ahead~~ruin my fun, crush my fantasies~~make me cry.......:( Is that the group I get to choose from? Damn it, Nell! You're so mean to me......:(

savvydating on April 18, 2017:

What a perfectly charming article, Nell. Who knew that a piece about men's hair color could be so interesting? I am intrigued by how well red-heads have done, but it sort of makes sense. Red heads are so rare, and in my mind, there is something vulnerable about a good way.

I have to say that I haven't trusted blondes, so it's funny that your findings suggest that most women feel the same way.

As for the squarish jaw you mentioned---Yes, please!

Another fun article. Enjoyed it so much!

Randi Benlulu from Mesa, AZ on April 18, 2017:

Fun read, Nell! I have to admit I was a little surprised by the statistics. Thank you for sharing this.

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on April 18, 2017:

I've always been attracted to a man with a ponytail, blond hair. My father had dark black hair, while my mother was a redhead. I had one sister with red hair and she was noted as ' the feisty one ' Ha.. Why men want to cut beautiful, thick hair has always been a mystery to me. A fun, and informative hub that I enjoyed reading Nell.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on April 18, 2017:

Well it better be dark brown turning to gray, or I'm screwed. LOL
