Is a Friend a Friend Forever?

I woke up feeling a bit empty this morning. I had a bad dream I was stuck in a back-woods family of women wearing paisley print dresses who's idea of having fun was going to the cousin's house to pick up the laundry. The highlight of the day was plunging the toilet because the field line was full and making sure all the wash water went down the drain. Men were scarce, most of the women were single, so they settled for what they could get. The dream held many attractive women, diamonds in the rough, with no education. I was a lot younger, perhaps 20's, and trying to convince somebody to take me to get my suitcase so I could leave. I was high-tailing it to live in the city! I kept telling them, "I'm leaving! You can get out of here, if you want; go to college and find a real job!" I didn't have a car, though I knew how to drive. I was in the midst of trying to snag one of the few men hanging around to give me a ride to cousin Joe's to get my suitcase full of clothes so I could get outta Dodge! That's when I woke up, thank God! I still feel panicked. Good grief, where did THAT come from?!

So I drug my half-asleep self up to the kitchen to make some coffee, turned on my computer and checked my emails. The first message was forwarded, entitled "Something To Make Your Day Lighter". Great, I thought, another stupid chain letter! I wanted to hear from the sender, so I opened it any way. Here's what the message said:

Me & Kathy, friends since age 3!

None of that 'Sis'-sy Stuff

Are you tired of those

sissy 'friendship' poems

that always sound good,

but never actually come close

to reality?

Well, here is a series of promises that actually speak of

True Friendship.

You WON'T see

cutesy little smiley faces

on this card-

Just the stone cold truth

of our great friendship.

Lynda's wedding in 1978. Still friends.

Lynda's wedding in 1978. Still friends.

Lynda in 1975, still friends.

Lynda in 1975, still friends.

1. When you are sad,

I will jump on the person

who made you sad

like a spider monkey

jacked up on Mountain Dew!!!

2.When you are blue,

I will try to dislodge

whatever is choking you.

3.When you smile,

I will know youare

plotting something

that I must be involved in.

4.When you're scared,

we will high tail it out of here.

Me & Tami in Colorado in 1998. Haven't seen you in 9 years sister, but I still love ya!

5.When you are worried,

I will tell you horrible stories about how much worse

it could be until you

quit whining, ya big baby!!!!

6.When you are confused,

I will use little words.

7.When you are sick,

Stay away from me

until you are well again.

I don't want whatever you have....

Me & Jennifer, friends since 1975.

Even the most unexpected, from the 70's!

Even the most unexpected, from the 70's!

8.When you fall,

I'll pick you up

and dust you off--

After I laugh my rear off!!

9.This is my oath...

I pledge it to the end.

'Why?' you may ask;

-- because you are my FRIEND!

***********************
Friendship is like peeing your pants,

everyone can see it,

but only YOU

can feel the

true warmth.

Now What?

This just goes to show you: when you wake up feeling hysterical, you've always got friends! When you feel angry or depressed, you've got friends! Feeling lonely today? I've got my friends! Having a pity party because something didn't turn out quite the way you expected? I'm calling my friend! Feeling jilted? Let's go play "Thelma & Louise"! Angry at your spouse? Go find a friend and have a griping session!

I'm going to find a friend today! I'm going to act crazy & forget my responsibilities!

To all those friends that don't see yourself pictured here - I couldn't find your picture, there's too many of  you out there! Don't take it personal!

And to my friend, Jolene, who sent me this message: May I say "Thank you for being my friend!"

That was a good message. Not everyone is blessed with the warmth of having true friends. Friendship is definitely a valued treasure.

Nice Hub donotfear. You really are a people-person. Friends have some very salient characteristics, wouldn't you say?

Veronica Allen from Georgia on December 12, 2009:

This message - I think - really shows what true friendship is about. The fact that you still have friends from your toddlerhood! This shows just how much you value friendship.
