The Best Dating Sites for Geeks and Nerds

Author:

Dating can be hard when you are a geek or nerd, especially when you would rather stay at home and binge watch Dr. Who or your favorite anime, study for that Quantum Mechanics test you have coming up, or any of the other thousands of things that are more fun than going out and drinking at a bar. You could always meet that special someone at a convention where hundreds, sometimes thousands of fans of anime, Star Trek, comic books and other fandoms converge for a weekend full of fun. But it can hard to meet someone in this kind of setting, especially if you are shy.

The dating sites plastered all over the news and radio, such as Eharmony and Match.com, don't cater to us nerds and geeks, and it might be hard to fall in love with someone who refuses to even go, forget cosplay, with you at the next anime convention, or who doesn't want to sit and have a marathon of your favorite sci-fi show, or have an intellectual conversation about climate change. .

For those of us willing to try online dating (which is probably all of us), there is hope. There are plenty of sites out there made for just us geeks and nerds. I scrolled through more than 25 dating websites, and here are the best eight dating websites for people looking for that special nerd in their life.

Geek 2 Geek

What it’s about: Geek 2 Geek is probably the most popular dating site for geeks, boasting the most members out of all the websites listed here, and it's one of the safest in my opinion. It's like any of the other major dating sites, such as Eharmony, or Match, with matchmaking questions geared towards geeks' and nerds' areas of interest, such as Star Wars, or Tron, anime, etc. With so many members you are likely, though not guaranteed, to find someone in your area who is interested in similar things.

I, myself, have used this site, and have gotten quite a lot of 'winks' and messages from other users. That's not me trying to to toot my horn, but just as proof that there are other active people on this dating site. This site has been around for awhile, so it’s unlikely to go bottoms up like many of the other nerd and geek dating sites out there, such as Sweet on Geeks.

How much it costs: According to the website, it is free to browse and free to make and receive initial contact, but a profile must be created first. The initial contact includes things like liking someone's profile, or 'winking' at someone. If you want to send or a read a message from some, you have to have paid for an account. However, if person sending you a messaging has a paid account, then you can read their messages. A little bit confusing, I know. Paid accounts, like most sites, are in tiers. For example, a one month subscription is around $35 per month, and unfortunately they make it so difficult to find the pricing, I couldn't find the pricing for the 3-month, 6-month and 1-year subscription, but I do know you pay the entire amount upfront, but it averages out to be less than $35 per month. I think the 3-month was around $69, but don't quote me on that.

Cons: The downside is that because this site is so big, it is not limited to geeks and/or nerds. There are many spam users, and members who are just pretending to be geeky. The other downside is it's not as simple as pressing a button to change your membership or cancel. And like most dating websites, you get a lot of people who contact you once, and then you never hear from them again.

Update: At the moment the website appears to be down. I don't know if this is temporary or permanent at the moment, but I will update with more information if it becomes available.

Soul Geek

What it’s about: This site by far has the most visual appeal, and feels like the most organized and easiest to navigate compared to some of the other sites. Signing up is an easy two-step process with a quick questionnaire. Based on your profile, the site matches you with other users. Matches are updated weekly. One of the major pluses for this site is that it’s not limited to girl finding guy and vice versa. If you are part of the LGBT community, in an open relationship, etc, this website offers many different options.

How much it cost: Like with most sites, basic membership is free, which allows one to browse members, and respond to messages sent to them, but does not allow one to initiate contact. Premium membership is as low as $9.95 a month for those with recurring memberships, i.e. people who sign up for 12, 30, or even 60 months. Also, be aware of the fact that your membership automatically renews unless you cancel it.

Cons: You will have to answer questions about your physical traits, such as body type, hair, etc, but a photo submission is not required. This site takes actual work (which isn’t really any different from any other dating site) you can’t just create a profile, sit back and hope someone out there finds you. The site encourages you to interact on their forums, chatrooms, and communities, so it's not for the lazy.

OtakuBooty

What it’s about: OtakuBooty is for lovers of all things manga, anime, and cosplaying. If you don't know what any of that is, then this site is not for you. Otaku is technically a derogatory word for nerds in Japan, but American lovers of anime and manga have proudly embraced the title.

The good news is that this site definitely caters to nerds, so there's no risk of running into any posers on the site. It's also not exclusively a dating site, so if you are just looking for a friend to go to a convention with, this website can also help. It's also a good place to find news and reviews on animes, mangas, and conventions as well.

If you have a good sense of humor, and you've just binged watched all 600+ episodes of Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden, and need a new anime to watch, this site is for you.

How much it costs: You can create an account for free, but a full membership is needed to communicate with other members. For only $4 a month, or $15 for the whole year, why not?

Con: The bad news is that this site is kind of confusing to browse. There's many different tabs that one can browse, and there's no real clear organization to the site, at least not for someone as OCD as me. It isn't clear what each tab is actually for either. For example, the tab labelled Dune Buggy, there's no clear description (or warning) of what it is, but after scrolling through it I unfortunately discovered it's a comic for very mature audiences involving a lot of penis jokes. Not sure why's it's on a dating/social networking site, but okay.

IntellectConnect

What it’s about: Intellectconnect is more for nerds than geeks. In their own words, Intellectconnect offers an exlusive meeting place for thinkers, brainiacs and the intellectually curious. If you are looking for someone smart, you are likely to find them here.

How much it costs: Membership is completely free.

Cons: It’s a rather bland site, but I know first-hand that appeals to intellects. It’s also not for geeks, but for the intellectual and for people interested in the arts. In other words, it kind of feels like a hipster website. It’s also a very generic questionnaire, which could be either a good thing, or a bad thing to find a wide range of people.

The Right Stuff

Pros: The Right Stuff is an incredibly exclusive dating site for intellects. You have to be a graduate, faculty member, or current student of a short list of about 70 prestigious colleges, like the Ivy League schools or MIT.

It’s not a traditional dating site. To be approved for this site, one has to submit proof that they are a graduate, student, or faculty member of the list of colleges provided on the site. Then one has to complete the forms provided by the website, write a short profile, complete a one page biography with a detailed account of your personality and preferences, and provide photos. If you have been approved, you do not create an online dating profile, the moderators of the site create one for you. You can meet people both offline and online and every month a list of profiles is e-mailed to you.

Because the site is so exclusive, there are a lot of high profile and successful members of the site, at least according to the moderator.

How much it costs: The price for this exclusive dating site is $75 for a six month subscription.

Cons: As a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, I might get approved to this site, but I’m not so sure I want to. The first thing I thought when reading the very first paragraph on the home page is 'this dating site is for snobs.' But if you only want to date someone who is guaranteed to be intelligent (and probably successful), and you went to a prestigious college such as Harvard, then this is the site for you.

Trek Passions

What it’s about: It’s not hard to guess what this site is all about. Despite the name, however, this is not just a site for Star Trek fans, but for fans of all things sci-fi related, in books, film, and television. It’s super easy to join, and does not require one to fill out a questionnaire first. This is the website for the nerdiest of the nerds. If you speak Klingon, and want to find someone else who does, go here.

How much it costs: Nothing! It’s free.

Cons: Just browsing through some of the profiles and through the site, there seems to be a disproportionate amount of men to women on this site

AnimeDates

What it’s about: This website is serious about connecting fans of anime, manga, JPop (Japanese pop music) and everything in between. Their questionnaire includes things like: what is your favorite anime genre, and which character from an anime or manga represents your perfect match (um, it would totally be Kakashi, but Minato or Kyoya would be just fine too). Plus, you get to pick and choose who you want to give your information to, and have the option to remain anonymous.

How much it costs: Unlike other websites, this one does not require a premium account to interact with other members, you can do so for free. But there is an option to upgrade to a paid account if you find you need more space to upload things like pictures.

Cons: The site reads more like a fan forum than a dating site, but that might change if you actually sign up for an account, which I did not. And their one and only success story is about a couple who didn’t even meet on the site.

Gay Geeks.org

What it’s about: This isn’t actually a dating site, it’s a forum, but I included it because once you read the homepage, you can see and feel how welcoming this site is. It doesn’t judge, doesn’t make you prove you’re a geek, and is a place to talk about all of your geeky passions.

How much it costs: It’s free.

Cons: It’s not a dating site

Is there a site I missed? Tell me about it in the comments below. And don't forget, be safe! Follow the recommended guidelines that each site gives on meeting new people. Be careful before you give anyone personal information, such as your cellphone number, or home address, and if you are going to meet, drive separately and always, always meet in a busy crowded place.

Hi ! You do not have to be a paying member to get good dates and friends at most dating site ! There are several FREE online dating sites out there where you can do this at too ! Also do not under any circumstances give anyone any money at these sites unless you know this person and their financial situation really well ! Not all blondes feel that they can get any race or any person they want just because they are blonde ! Anyone who believes that blondes feel that they are - hot stuff - are just ignorant in more ways then their issues with blonde problems are ! What about the - dumb blonde - theory ? God gave blondes brains just like he gave brains to every one else whether they use them or not is their problem ! Thanks

Yes, Thad, Anon, I agree. I don't know what happened to Geek 2 Geek, but the site has come and gone, and come and gone again. I believe the site to be no longer functioning now. I will have to go through and update the websites in this list as I believe many of them have become defunct since I wrote this article. Thank you for your comment:)

Thad on August 02, 2018:

Once upon a time geek 2 geek was a decent site. I had a few dates from there. These days it is a bot infested dumpster fire and a blatant waste of money.

Anon on February 25, 2018:

GK2GK is a spam site that is not worth the money, Don't trust it!

You don't have anything to worry about as long as we all have each other united in love.

You probably got a lot of action on geek 2 geek because it's known to be full of fake accounts that interact with you to make it feel like it'll be a successful endeavor.

Felicia , this is exactly the thing that keeps me away from internet dating.

I don't care how much a women makes (as long as she has a job and some ambition). I take care of my self and have a stable job is all she should need to know. I never fill out my income on a dating site. If it made me I would lie and say I make much less.

Men avoid gold diggers like women avoid sexual predators.

Rod Perkins on November 15, 2016:

Hello everyone. I have read all the comments here and I want to share my experience too. I began to use dating sites approximately five years ago. After my wife's death I could not get over it and I couldn’t get acquainted with women in the street. So I got in touch with dating sites. I have tried about 40 sites. I will not list them all, but believe me, all the sites that you know - I've been there. There are good, there bad, there are clearly fraudulent sites. Several times I’ve become a victim of fraud and sent the money for the tickets, surgeries, expensive medicines, even for food and clothes for poor parents of those women. Of course there were only lies. Yes I was a fool several times. And then I met my wife, Masha. This is the best woman in my life, I love her so much. She differs from all the women that I’ve met before her. She is very kind, attentive, educated, loving. Masha is not mercantile and greedy. The only problem during our acquaintance was that Masha did not speak English. It was very difficult to communicate. We did not know what to do. But we found solution for our problem. We found translation service on the internet. We started to communicate on that site in September. Two months later she came to me for our first meeting. By the way she bought the tickets on her own. Next time I came to her in Moscow and offered her my hand. And then we got married ... Oh, such a perfect day it was!

So on that site there are still a lot of women, really good women who want to find love. Their only drawback is that they do not speak foreign languages and that’s why they feel awkward. And it’s such a pity that on some sites women cheat men and are only interested in money for tickets, etc. And on the other sites women try and really want a relationship. Maybe my advice will help someone. Try this site youandme-we.com It’s helped me to build a family. Hopefully it will help you too. I wish you all good luck.
