Year after year twenty something women come to New York City in search for the two ‘L’s’ -- labels and love
Twenty years ago I was one of them. Having gotten the knack for labels early, I concentrated on my search for love, turns out a knockoff is not as easy to stop as you think, until you do.
This is why you need lots of help to spot them, help also known as Charlotte York, Miranda Hobbes and Samantha Jones.
My name is Carrie Bradshaw and I’m a writer, year after year my single girlfriends were my salvation, and as it turns out, my meal ticket.
And there, in the same city where they met us girls, four New York women entered the next phase of their lives dressed head to toe in love.
Quotes by Carrie Bradshaw
“When it comes to relationships, maybe we’re all in glass houses, and shouldn’t throw stones. Because you can never really know. Some people are settling down, some are settling and some people refuse to settle for anything less than butterflies.”
“Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are those that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship is the one you have with yourself. And if you can find someone to love the you you love, well that’s fabulous.”
“They say nothing lasts forever; dreams change, trends come and go, but friendships never go out of style.”
“That crazy concept that we’re not really responsible for the course our lives take. That it’s all predestined, written in the stars. Maybe that explains why, if you live in a city, where you can’t even see the stars, your love life tends to feel a little more random. And even if our every man, every kiss, every heartache, is pre-ordered from some cosmic catalogue, can we still take a wrong step and wander off our own personal milky way? I couldn’t help but wonder, can you make a mistake and miss your fate?”
“I’m looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can’t-live-without-each-other love.”
“He was like the flesh and blood equivalent of a DKNY dress. You know it’s not your style, but it’s right there, so you try it on anyway.”
“Life gives you lots of chances to screw up which means you have just as many chances to get it right.”
“It wasn’t logic, it was love.”
“I can't be hemmed in by rules. I go with my emotions.”
“Soul mate: two little words, one big concept. A belief that someone, somewhere, is holding the key to your heart.”
“As we drive along this road called life, occasionally a gal will find herself a little lost. And when that happens, I guess she has to let go of the coulda, shoulda, woulda, buckle up and just keep going.”
“You shouldn’t have to sacrifice who you are just because somebody else has a problem with it.”
“Everyone thinks they know so goddamned much about everything and no one knows fuck all about anything!”
“The truth is, at any given moment someone somewhere could be making a face about you. but it’s the reviews you give yourself that matter.”
“Some love stories aren’t epic novels, some are short stories. But, that doesn’t make them any less filled with love.”
“Maybe I didn’t break Big. Maybe the problem was he couldn’t break me. Maybe some women aren’t meant to be tamed. Maybe they need to run free, until they find someone just as wild to run with.”
“Being single used to mean that nobody wanted you. Now it means you’re pretty sexy and you’re taking your time deciding how you want your life to be and who you want to spend it with.”
“After all, seasons change, so do cities; people come into your life and people go. But it’s comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your heart. And if you’re very lucky, a plane ride away.”
“There comes a point in every relationship when romance gives way to reality.”
“I used to think those people who sat alone at Starbucks writing on their laptops were pretentious posers. Now I know: They are people who have recently moved in with someone.”
Samantha Jones Quotes
"Don't blame marriage, this one's married and she's not growing a national forest. Any thicker and you won't be able to find it."
“Good guys screw you, Bad guys screw you and the rest don't know how to screw you"
“Honey, you know me, I don't really believe in marriage; now Botox on the other hand, that works every time."
“I wanted to buy this for myself. That meant something to me to be able to do that. And then he buys it for me. But now every time I look down at it, I see him not me.”
“The only place you can control a man is in bed.”
Charlotte York Quotes
“Early dinner with bachelor number one, late supper with bachelor number two.”
"Nobody gets everything they want! Look at you, look at Miranda. You're good people and you two both got shafted. I'm so happy and... something bad is going to happen."
“I suggested he have a tomato salad, then I suggested we get married.”
“I promise I won't become one of those mothers who can only talk about diaper genies.”
Miranda Hobbes Quotes
"Charlotte has pudding in her Prada."
“Maybe it's maturity or the wisdom that comes with age, but the witch in Hansel and Gretel—she's very misunderstood. I mean, the woman builds her dream house and these brats come along and start eating it.”
"My marriage is going through a rough spot. I don't have time to wax!"
“I'm sorry, if a man is over thirty and single, there's something wrong with him. It's Darwinian. They're being weeded out or propagating the species.”
Aw thanks Carrie! I would really love that Louis :)

This is my favorite series that I watch over and over! It is nice to know women in their 30's and 40's are still having a great time and an interesting sometimes exciting life. Carrie has my favorite quotes, but Samantha is my favorite character. She is so bold, beautiful, assertive, and confident!
twentyfive (author) on March 10, 2011:

Great hub on SEX AND THE CITY, Fehl! The quotes are great. Kim Catrall is one I especially love, she is a great character actress. And Charlotte can be a bit vacant in a cute ditsy way at times. They all have their strengths and vulnerabilities. Real girlies! And apparently Cynthia Nixon has come out.
Can't wait for the prequel! Love your hubs and these quotes, Fehl! Ingat ka! :D

Funny, yet useful. I know they are quotes from a tv show, but strangely enough, they also make good advice. -Paul

Hy Fehl, gosh I am such a fan of Sex and the City. I read the book it is based on, and it is very clever how it shows Carrie making friends with these oddball women and her love of the fashions and her meeting the strange people that she dates and has relationships with.
If you are not a big city person, it may not appeal so much. But the first movie was a success, and I enjoyed it. The series is one of my all-time favorites ever.
Some of these lines made me laugh our loud, Fehl.
"...“I suggested he have a tomato salad, then I suggested we get married...” That is such a stoner. Ha. Who writes like that?
This is brilliant, Fehl. I am doing a jig on your tabs. Wanna check out my new hub too? Just posted. :D XO

Sex and the City is a tv series based on a novel then later they made two movies of it. Like the title itself, it's about sex and single lives of four women living in Manhattan. You're absolutely right, marriage is not the only thing around. It's just a piece of the the big picture. But Sex and the City portrays a lot of things that could be good and bad. As for me, I found lots of wisdom from it LOL Happy to see you Nan :)
Nan Mynatt from Illinois on February 23, 2011:
Is this story for real. Marriage is not the only thing around. If you are not compatiable you should not be together. People like you said, go through life seeking someone or something and never find neither. Go to a city that is not quite as big and find a real person. The NY people I think are all on a merry-go-round. Maybe you need to get off.
