12 Lessons From Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex

Margaret Minnicks is an online writer who writes about the royal family.

Former actress Meghan Markle married Prince Harry, the sixth in line to the throne of England on Saturday, May 19, 2018, in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Over 29 million people watched the wedding on television. The global audience was up to 2 billion watchers.

On the day of their marriage, Queen Elizabeth gave her grandson the title of Duke of Sussex and Meghan became the Duchess of Sussex.

After meeting Prince Harry on a blind date over 16 months before they married, Meghan's life began to change. By the time they married, her life had changed a lot, and it will continue to change as she gets adjusted to being in the royal family.

Even though the California native's life will never be like it was before she met Harry, there are some life lessons that everyone can learn from her.

Lesson 1: Be Open to Possibilities

Meghan met Harry on a blind date that had been set up for the couple by a mutual friend. The only question she asked when a friend set them up was, "Is he nice?" She was brave enough to meet him without any reservations or expectations.

We don't have to go on a blind date to be open to possibilities. They are always around us.

Lesson 2: Pay Attention to Glimpses of Your Future

When Meghan was just 15 years old in 1996, she sat on a fence outside Buckingham Palace with her friend, Ninaki Priddy, during a summer field trip. At the time, she had no idea that it would be her home 21 years later. It surely seemed impossible at the time, but God was preparing her to become the Duchess of Sussex.

Don't dismiss glimpses of your future when God gives them to you.

Lesson 3: Get to Know People Based on Their Own Stories

Prince Harry and Meghan had been dating for six months before anybody knew about it. After their first date, he took her on a 5-day trip to Botswana where they slept outside under the stars.

They got to know each other without any interference from others. Meghan later confessed that she got to know Harry through his own stories, and he got to know her through her stories.

Relate to a person based on how the two of you get along rather than listening to the opinions of others.

Lesson 4: Live Your Life Based On Your Own Purpose

Most people fail because they listen to what others say instead of trusting their own feelings. From the very beginning, Meghan was comfortable in her own skin and didn't need others to validate her. She knew what she wanted, and she didn't wane in doing what was best for her.

Rely on your own purpose and seek to fulfill it.

Lesson 5: Don't Negate Your Own Worth

Meghan lives her life based on her own worth. She did not need Prince Harry to complete her.

People might think because she was a commoner and he is royalty he is giving her more than she is giving him. Meghan takes a lot to the table as well.

If you saw their wedding, you could not help but see the love coming from both of them. One did not complete the other, but they complemented each other.

Lesson 6: Smile Even Though Something Goes Wrong

Most of the world know about the scandal involving Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, just days before the wedding. He said he wouldn't be there to walk her down the aisle. He reconsidered and said he would be there. Then he had heart surgery just three days before the wedding.

At the last minute, Meghan asked Prince Charles to walk her down the aisle. She walked part way alone in front of her small bridesmaids and pageboys before she walked the rest of the way on the arm of the future king, Prince Charles, who presented her to his own son to marry her.

Meghan smiled the whole time even though she was concerned about her father. We need to learn to smile even though things don't go the way we want them to go.

Lesson 7: Stay Positive

Parents, Doria Ragland, a black woman, and Thomas Markle, a white man, divorced when their daughter was only six years old. Meghan herself divorced after only two years of marriage.

Those divorces did not cause the former Suits actress to give up on love or marriage. She was positive and willing to try marriage again.

Stay positive when things don't work out the way the world thinks they should.

Lesson 8: Work Hard Toward Your Dreams

Meghan worked hard toward fulfilling her dream to become an actress. She accepted many small jobs along the way. She worked as a calligrapher and was a briefcase model on Deal or No Deal before she got her first big break to play the part of Rachel Zane on the legal drama series Suits.

We, too, must not despise small beginnings. Like Meghan, we should embrace our stepping stones as we move toward our ultimate goal.

Lesson 9: Prepare Yourself

Even though Meghan grew up in a single parent household, she did all she could to prepare herself to become self-sufficient. She was educated at private schools in California.

Her elementary school was Hollywood Little Red Schoolhouse. She attended Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She earned a bachelor's degree after completing a double major in theater and international studies.

She completed an internship at the American embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and studied a semester in Madrid, Spain.

Like Meghan, we should prepare ourselves to be well rounded.

Lesson 10: Diversify

Meghan did not put all her eggs in one basket. She prepared herself and kept herself busy doing what she was passionate about. She was an ambassador for the United Nations and have several charities.

Queen Elizabeth admired Meghan for her humanitarian work. It was reported that was one reason she had no problem giving Harry permission to marry Meghan.

While it is good to focus on one main thing, it doesn't hurt to have diversity in your life instead of putting all your eggs in one basket.

Lesson 11: Have a Support System

Meghan has close friends and a good support system. She knows which people are there for her and those she can count on. Even though she is far away from her American friends, she still keeps in touch with them.

Meghan's mother was the only family member in Windsor for her daughter's wedding. Even so, Meghan was surrounded by people who love her.

Some members of Meghan's family badmouthed her, but she had her heart set on what she knew was right for her. She did not let anyone deter her from following through with what her heart was telling her.

We should make sure we are surrounded by people who love us and are not out to make our lives miserable. It is sad to say, but some family members fit into that latter category.

If you do not have one, get yourself a good support system.

Lesson 12: Never Give Up On Love

Meghan could have given up on love after her divorce, but she didn't. She began a relationship with actor and producer Trevor Engelson in 2004. They married in 2011 and divorced in 2013.

She did not let her divorce or the divorce of her own parents stop her from finding love again.

If you have had a failed marriage or a relationship that didn't work out, don't give up on love. Meghan didn't and now she is in a palace after a fairytale wedding.
