An Honest Conversation About Race

James A. Watkins is an entrepreneur, musician, and a writer with four non-fiction books and hundreds of magazine articles read by millions.

An Honest Conversation About Race

The most searched for word on the Internet is 'Race.' Race is a hot topic, what with Black Lives Matter; some famous black multi-millionaires hating on America in public; teachers being told to teach kids about ‘white privilege;’ ‘micro-aggressions’ and ‘safe places;’ jobs and college slots being divided up by race.

Many prominent people, including President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, have said, “We need an honest conversation about race.” Well, my latest book is exactly that.

It started when I put up a web page – specifically an internet magazine article called a ‘Hub,’ on HubPages - with one simple question on it: “Why is it that you are twenty times more likely to see a black guy with a white girl as you are to see a white guy with a black girl?” Not that there's anything wrong with it!

To my surprise and delight, hundreds of thousands of people from around the world visited the page. Five thousand of them left comments—the most fascinating, funny, and flabbergasting of which are in my book. The subject inevitably turned to sex, which I thought was great because what is more interesting and talked about than sex? And race?

The article was a real moneymaker for me for about a year. Then it was demonetized, not because of what it said but because of some racist comments made by visitors that I had not deleted fast enough. I did delete them but it was not remonetized.

How the Book was Put Together

It was another Hubber who gave me the idea to collect the comments and make them into a book: “Just reading the comments is incredibly entertaining. You should make a book out of them. If you don’t, maybe I will!” At that point I unpublished the Hub so no one else could steal the idea and use the comments.

I printed out the comments section, which required a mammoth amount of paper because some were quite long, and using scissors I cut out each individual comment. I put them in piles as to their general topic. I knew that many people said more or less the same thing without reading all the comments made before them. So my editing process was eliminating redundancies by selected the comments that made a particular point the best.

As far as I know, this is the only collection of comments on HubPages that have been published as a book.

Why the Massive Disparity?

I think there has to be something going on in our society to create such an imbalance. In other words, why aren’t you just as likely to see a white man out on the town with a black woman as you are a white woman with a black man? Something other than straightforward integration is at work—some social force that acts very differently on whites than on blacks—and differently on males versus on females.

By the way, not one person expressed doubt that my ratio was accurate, 20-1. I got responses from America, Canada, Mexico, South America, Africa, China, Japan, Australia, the Middle East, and all over Europe. Only one group was angry that the question was even being asked: White Women.

'Black Guys with White Girls' First Reviews

“Priceless! I found this book absolutely fascinating. Very interesting to read, shocked by the difference in opinions written in response to the question posed. A must read!”

“Fascinating from start to finish. Who would have thought that such a simple question could provoke such a myriad of responses? I found quite a bit of the feedback rather shocking, but admittedly found myself most intrigued by the responses of black women. Their views on the subject at hand were enlightening to say the least. Five Stars...... an A++ from the teacher. Must read. Black Guys with White Girls- Buy it Now- Fabulous, Enlightening Read.”

“Have you ever wondered why most interracial relationships are black guy/white girl? So have many others, and this book is filled with quotes from all sides of the issue. Very informative discussion on a topic that is almost taboo to even mention in today's PC society. Great job, James A. Watkins. An unbiased look at the black guy/white girl interracial phenomenon.”

“A great informative read! James Watkins hits the nail on the head here. A great informative read.”

Takato Komori ~ Thank you for reading my book. I find your comments quite interesting. You do have some piercing insights. I am especially struck by your comment, "It`s clear white men and black men view each other very negatively." I hadn't thought of it that way but it appears you are right. As far as White Guilt goes, well, I have written a separate article about that very topic:

Takako Komori from Yokohama, Japan on April 15, 2019:

Hello James, I haven`t quite finished reading your book yet, although I am on the last section "what do white guys say?".

The previous sections, especially "what do black guys say?" had a pretty clear message. The black guys` hatred towards white guys is obvious and many of these opinons clearly pointed out that black men have been victims throughout American history and they hinted that black guys are seeking revenge by taking white women away from white men by pairing up with them. This was quite persuading.

However, the opinions of white guys appear to be mixed. Some of them expressed that white guys cannot easily express their manliness unlike the past (which could be why white women are gravitating towards black men). Some of them feel bad that they have made black men victims historically. One of the common factors I have found among these mixed opinions is that white men are convinced that black men are racists. Very few of these opinions viewed black men positively.

It`s clear white men and black men view each other very negatively and hold prejudiced views towards each other. But white men, in reaction to what black men are saying, appear to be confused and don`t know what to make of the black man`s anger. Do you think this is the case, and do you think white men feel guilty that they have made black men victims in the past. i.e. "white guilt"?

Brad Masters ~ You are most welcome.

Brad on March 29, 2019:

I can agree with that, thanks.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on March 29, 2019:

Brad Masters ~ The key demographic to note is that MARRIED women vote Conservative. Married women with children even more so. Single mothers vote Democrat because Government is their real baby daddy.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on March 29, 2019:

Thank you Will Starr for your brilliant assessment. I 100% agree with you.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on March 29, 2019:

Takako Komori ~ Thank you so much for purchasing my book and for your report on what you've read so far. I look forward to hearing back from you after you've finished it with your overall review.

I feel compelled to repeat your striking remarks: "... black men are likely to abandon women and their children so that any woman regardless of race that has children with a black man will end up a single mother. There was an opinion by a black woman who said that "black women have been raising their children alone for generations". These opinions (or trends) came as a shock to me because this would mean many of these biracial children will end up fatherless ..."

Yes, that is exactly what it means. I would say a key problem is that Democrat policies, namely the Great Society, drove men out of their homes and family courts finished the job by destroying men's relationships with their children.

Brad on March 28, 2019:

I didn't see your response to my comment until now. I agree with all of it. I would add that, I think this virtual black voter slavery by the democrats is changing. It seems like many blacks have changed to red from blue in the last election.

The big democrat voters are now women, from what I have seen in the election results. These are more of my opinion than fact, but I think it makes sense. Since Hillary Clinton lost, the democrats targeted women, and blaming all their woes on the republicans.

The democrats political platform of resisting, and blaming the republicans for women being shorted in business wound up making the largest number of women in congress, 100.

I don't know the racial breakdown of what women were elected, and what women for the women. All, I think is that the democrat plan worked. I am sure that the Dr Ford and democrat losing their fight to keep Kavanaugh out of SCOTUS rang the bell with a lot of women who believed that Kavanaugh got away with it.

Finally, it is greater than just Black and White, and more that Black Men and White Women is a democrat plan of attack when they finally changed tactics after the Civil Rights movement put the spot light on them.

WillStarr from Phoenix, Arizona on March 28, 2019:

In the 1950's, Takako Komori, the American race most likely to have a father in the home was the black race. That was changed in the mid-60's when the Democrat Party, under the leadership of Lyndon Johnson, made welfare payments higher to single mothers. Today, it's traditional for black men to be 'baby daddies' who have no intention of marrying the mothers of their children or raising those children.

Since LBJ was an ardent racist, I suspect that the results were intentional.

Takako Komori from Yokohama, Japan on March 28, 2019:

Hello James, I am now almost half way through your book and am reading the section on "What Do Other People Say?". I have to say this must be one of the most intriguing books I have read in quite a while. Although the content of these opinions are not quantified, they hint at a very important and real trend that is occuring in America and other parts of the world regarding race relations between blacks and whites. These opinions point to significant historical issues such as slavery and how abuse of black people helped to shape how they are seen by other groups, especially whites.

One issue especially drew my attention. As a few of these opinions state, black men are likely to abandon women and their children so that any woman regardless of race that has children with a black man will end up a single mother. There was an opinion by a black woman who said that "black women have been raising their children alone for generations". These opinions (or trends) came as a shock to me because this would mean many of these biracial children will end up fatherless, and single parent households will increase.

I wonder why black men tend to abandon their spouses/partners and their children? Is it because they have been abused historically? Sorry if I went off topic.

Looking forward to reading the rest of your book!

Brad on February 18, 2019:

I read your comment to Trentadue

It struck me that the Blacks calling all whites Racist parallels that original sin in the Bible. God has blamed us for something he created and the Blacks are doing the same thing. The bulk of America was populated most heavily in the late 1800s and early 1900s by Europeans. These Europeans were white and they had nothing but the right to immigrate into the US. Slavery was brought to the US by England and it thrived here.

The Europeans and most white people that immigrated to America had nothing to do with slavery and most of them weren't in the position to own slaves. They were slaves in their own right working for sweat shops in the big cities.

The blame shouldn't be on the white population for slavery. Although the whites in England and the white slave traders capitalized on slavery. They however weren't the ones in Africa that rounded up the slaves, as it was black African tribes that made other Africans slaves to be sold and shipped around the world. It was also white people that fought and died to end slavery. My point is that it is wrong for blacks to blame an entire race, especially when it was their race that made them slaves.

Since 1964 blacks have gained traction in their journey for equality. Today, in spite of 8 years under a "black" president they have attained statuses in many cases equal to and sometimes greater than whites. Unlike the white European immigrants the blacks were given many benefits including protection against discrimination, and the protection to not lose jobs because they are black, The Jews didn't get any of that help from the government, and they didn't do what the blacks did by becoming handouts in the welfare system. And for many decades now, the white only sports or the early 20th century has flipped today. The whites in most professional sports are minorities.

While most of the black progress in the US has been based on sports and music which was the skill set in Africa. But they lag way behind in being educated and getting white collar jobs, no pun intended. Yet, they had affirmative action for jobs and education but they merely displaced a more qualified candidate in many cases. Today, criminal gangs in America are heavily populated with blacks and Hispanics. That shouldn't be a racist statement as it is just a fact. The blacks as a minority also go beyond being a minority in our prisons, and jails, another fact.

To parallel you black man white woman, let us look at what constitutes black. President Barack Obama was touted as a black president which statement could be construed as racist. Why, because he was the equal product of a white woman (even then they liked black men) and a black man. And even when blacks were slaves they had children from a white father. And after over 150 years of this white influence on blacks having babies, the tide has gone further with black men having babies with white women.

My point is that this whole white racist movement is not factual, and it is preserved and continue for political reasons. The one drop of black blood making the person black needs to be changed to reflect reality. How many of the blacks in America totally a blacks without any white influence.

It comes down to skin color transcends genetics. Today, the blacks have successfully been transformed into racists, while still blaming and condemning whites for something most of them didn't have anything to do with.

Look at Hollywood, movies, are TV loaded with what should be a minority black person. The blacks are also heavily found in advertisements in the papers, and in magazines well beyond their presence as a minority. They are being fast tracked by politics while white people have become their whipping boys.

I have a granddaughter that has a black father although in abstentia, and I have other grandchildren that have a Mexican mother. So I am a little UN.

The point is that the line between races in the US is disappearing and we have a blended society, and it is the politicians that keep the old line alive for political purposes.

Thank you very much, James Trentadue. May I ask the titles of the books you are currently reading?

James Trentadue from Madison, WI. on February 17, 2019:

James...I will hunt down your book and read it.

I am currently reading books on end time prophecy, and the Russian Hoax and the plot to take down the Trump Presidency. Human behaviors are a topic that comes up often in this realm of thought.

I follow your thoughts and interject thoughts on baseball history which i very much enjoy.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on February 17, 2019:

James Trantadue ~ Based on your comments and questions, I must confess you are the perfect candidate for my book. It gets into all the areas you mentioned.

The best that race relations have ever been, according to surveys, was the day President Obama took office. I don't remember the exact numbers but something like 70% of Americans said race relations were 'excellent,' an all time high. By the time Obama left office that percentage had plummeted to 30%.

I have another Hub entitled 'White Guilt,' which is essentially a summary of a book by that name by black intellectual Shelby Steele. One of the things he says is: "Black students claim they are surrounded by racism, that universities are racist institutions. Ask these students for specific examples and they can’t come up with any. But shockingly, today’s black students feel even more aggrieved than did black students fifty years ago. And this feeling of great distress is calibrated not to real racism, but to the level of white guilt on campus. White guilt produces exhibitions of animus for having been racially injured in blacks reflexively."

One of the comments I quote in my book is this one: “All Americans consider blacks more likely to be racist than whites or Hispanics. Thirty-seven percent of American Adults think most blacks are racist, according to a National Survey. Just 15% consider most whites racist while 18% say the same of most Hispanics. Even black Americans think blacks are more racist than whites, by 31% to 24%. So while white women claim to be going black to combat white racism, they are joining up with more vehemently virulent racists.”

Another comment was: "I can tell you that hating white people with rage and hostility, along with hating America, has become common among blacks, even among blacks that this country has showered with fame, wealth and privilege. Every institution in America is denigrated as racist to these people. Blacks viciously hate America and white men. But they love to do our women because that is the sweetest revenge."

And finally, I will share one more with you: "Blacks today say that only whites can be racist because only whites have power. White men deserve to be hated by everyone else because they are the oppressors. We have black professors at our universities, primarily paid by white people, who earn hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to teach students that blacks killing whites is morally excusable—“payback” that is praiseworthy and necessary for “liberation” from white oppression. “If you repress your black rage you are perpetuating white supremacy,” writes one black female professor, “If you lack killing rage you are merely a victim.” ‘Black rage theory’ has even been used to defend criminals in court, and one survey found that 67% of American blacks agreed, even rich black folks seem to take some kind of sadistic pleasure from black killings of whites. ‘Critical Race Theory’ is the latest rage on campus, which teaches that whites can do nothing right and blacks can do nothing wrong. Even black criminals are hailed as heroic rebels against oppression. All whites are guilty; all black are victims. When blacks commit crimes, it is whites that should bear the guilt for “driving them to it.” In religion, these ideas are expressed at Obama’s ‘church’ of ‘black liberation theology,’ the founder of which, David Cone, longed for “the destruction of whiteness, which is the source of human misery in the world.”

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on February 17, 2019:

Brad Masters ~ Your not the only one. I too was astonished to see the numbers roll in for that Hub. At one time it was half my total page views and my other 200 articles split the other half.

As far as why they were interested, well, as I said I received thousands of comments, even from people as far away as China and Africa. Their interest varied according to their background but EVERYBODY seemed very interested. And why not? If millions of American men were eschewing American women to go for Russian women, or if 20% of all Norwegian women were dating Somalis, or even if millions of Spanish women were hooking up with French men but hardly any the other way round I think many would find it an interesting topic.

For instance, the first comment I got, I'll never forget, was from a elderly black woman from Atlanta who, said, "I don't know why it's happening, but around here it is an epidemic. There aren't any decent guys left for black women, they all chase after white girls. The brothers aren't interested in us. A lot of us will go into old age alone."

I'd say being lonely and feeling rejected are two of the most powerful reasons to care about anything.

WillStarr from Phoenix, Arizona on February 17, 2019:

Yes, I did buy your book, Jimmy! Good stuff.

James Trentadue from Madison, WI. on February 17, 2019:

Is it me, or my perspective that sees more racism these days towards white people from the black communities.

I believe I am not prejudiced whatso ever, i even look to be more empathetic towards a person of color. I have a couple of black freinds that I regularly interact with, (one very close freind) that I've trusted everything I times.

I boxed, played baseball in Chicago's Park district's. I ran across many people of color. I don't remember any racism on the field at the time (70s-80s).

In todays world I'm willing to accept any person of color, but it doesn't seem mutual.

I've talked to this issue with my American Black freinds and my African Black freinds. Way different pespectives to say the least.

My American (Chicago)Black freinds tell me what community's to stay out of even though (they say) that I carry myself well enough to stay out of big trouble.

My African Black freinds are just working hard, and grateful for the opportunities this country affords them.

It leads me to believe the politics of the United States power monger mentality, that exists in our political sphere has kept American's fighting for "there piece of the pie". Therby keeping us from healing!

Back to the point I was trying to make, could it be the point of view from the American Person of color that doesn't allow black girls the same freedom of thought or the opportunity to experience freedom of thought to prefer White guys?

It could be cultural that white guys have more familiarity towards their own, (or vice versa), But it leads the question why the disparity?

As much as I try to say it's not prejudice, If it is.. I wouldn't believe that it would be their fault totally.

Brown?... I have two Mexican son in laws...I love them very much as they have blessed me with grandchildren that I love as well. So no prejudice there for sure.

I guess this dwarfed into my personal thoughts on racism. SORRY

Point is...I wish it didn't exist and MLK's

Dream of equality would be a reality.

Brad on February 17, 2019:

Happy New Year, I am glad to see a long time hubber persist through all of their ups and downs.

While, I don't have much interest in the Black M and White F, I was curious about the number of views and comments, and the success of your book on the subject. I find hubbers basically apathetic in general so it astonished me to read those numbers.

The Why, I would seek an answer to is why are they interested in that subject, but don't really care about subjects that affect their daily lives like the direction of the country?

Have a great day!

Brad on February 17, 2019:

Interesting stats on a subject that wouldn't seem to draw that much interest, at least not to me. I did question why the blondest, and even the prettiest whitest girls went for the blacks guys. And I did notice that there was no reciprocal of black woman and white man.

I just looked at it as fact, and moved on.

Takako Komori from Yokohama, Japan on February 16, 2019:

Hi James, I congratulate you on publishing this book! I admire your effort, and what`s more you kept your promise. When I commented on your hub quite a while ago I also mentioned that I was taken by surprise by all the heated discussion that was seen in the comments section. You responded that "someday I`ll write a book about this". And now, the book has come to reality! I hope to get a copy of it in the near future.

Btw I just bought a used copy of your book "What does the devil do all day" and had it sent to someone I know in prison for 35 years and for the last 33 he has been leading prisoners to Christ. Please say a prayer for him, he is coming up for parole this summer. Speak about books, he could write a doosey! (Could use someone like you as as ghost writer) Forgive me for being off topic but here is something that I know will warm those cockles of your heart, you probably already know what he says toward the end but doesn't hurt to be reminded.
