Blondes vs Brunettes vs Redheads

  • Author:
  • Updated date:

You knew it was coming. it wouldn't be long until I had to bring up one of the most controversial questions since the beginning of time. Who is better Blonde's, redheads or brunettes. Being a woman I obviously know that that hair color does not make one better. However men and society has dictated otherwise. When researching this topic I found many many articles debating this same question, As always let's explore!

The Myths

Lets take a look at the myths and stereotypes about each type of gal.

Blondes per say are supposed to be dumb. You don't hear the phrase Brunette or redhead joke do you? Blondes are also supposed to be more fun!. The "dumb" stereotype can be blamed on the the movie starlets of yesteryear. Many who played the part of a not so smart gal with bleach blonde hair. Classic blonde? Marylin Monroe!

Brunettes are naturally smart and dependable. The are also very sophisticated!

Redheads have a feisty temper and are very alluring to men. As stated in one of the articles I read " red stands for passion and when a man sees a woman with red hair he thinks he has met someone who gets to the point and won't mess around when it comes to sex."

An article published in Mail Online in August of 2006 states redheads have more sex and more sexual partners than blondes or brunettes. This information was complied by a doctor in Germany who studied 100 German women. It further states a woman who dyes her hair read is stating she ready to find a mate or that she is unhappy in her relationship. ( scary, because I have been contemplating dying my hair reddish)

Garnier Nutrisse ( yes the hair people) did a study on woman's hair color and came up with some surprising results.  Brunettes were found th be more fun than the blonde's and redheads.  This study also indicates Brunettes are more successful in the workplace and in the bedroom ( You go Brunettes!!)  Of the 6000 people surveyed it was determined that Brunettes are most likely going to make between  60,000 and 80,000 a year.  Study indicated that 71% would prefer a brunette for a long term relationship ( well duh  if she makes 60 thou she's akeeper!).  81% felt that brunettes were most genuine and 71% felt they were the least moody.  This study concludes that the brown hair goes with confidence and self awareness.  3000 men that participated in this poll stated brunettes wer down to earth and they were more likely to settle down with one than compared to their counterparts

The study completed by Garnier Nutrisse suggested that men found blondes to be fun and better girlfriends ( even though they settled down with a brunette) Another poll I found of 80 men surveyed 55% preferred blondes. Along with the blonde hair men also preferred blue eyes. The author of this poll suggested that men were equating blonde hair and blue eyes to youth!

I ran into some statistics on what people prefer. On 44270 people cast their vote and brunettes won! The got 26411 votes.(60%) They were followed in by the blondes and the redheads placed third.

I got to thinking about how else we can measure the popularity of hair color. Miss America came to mind. Out of the last ten years there were only three blondes crowned Ms America! The other seven were all brunette. No redheads.. sorry gals. Also for fun I peeked in a the Barbie website.. you know the dolls. There were very few Barbie dolls that were NOT blonde.

What Guys think about Blondes vs Redheads vs Brunette

What women had to say

While reading articles I read quite a few comments and found several redheaded women state the more intellectual man goes for the redhead. One woman stated being a redhead gave her the best of both worlds. She could boast the sexy glamour image of the blonde and still be thought of as intelligent like a brunette! Another woman discusses her male friend marrying a brunette. She states she thinks it is a measure of a great guy!

So who is the best?  The best at what?  When it comes down to it hair color shouldn't really matter.  Society has given us some stereotypes and it is up to all of us red heads, brunettes and blondes go against the grain.

You knew I would ask

As of July 2013, Redheads have a definite lead! Lets wait to see if another hair color becomes more popular as time goes on.

I have am a natural red head although its more of a coppery color. I love being a red head but i don't go aound saying oh look at me i have red hair i used to hate being a redhead because they have freckles but i have gotten better everyday for accepting myself. i am a girl and i would have to say i like all of the hair colors but jet black is pretty sexy

George P on October 18, 2011:

I am in my 60's tall, dark and handsome. Married to a gorgeous redhead 20 years younger. Not a night goes by that we don't do a lot more than just sleep. This by far the hottest relationship I have ever known. And she is my best friend, too. We are very close and intimate. Throw away the Viagra boys. All you need is a redhead.

Ryan on August 01, 2011:

Redheads are HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anna on June 20, 2011:

Marisa Mayer is blonde. Vice president of IBM is blonde. One of the smartest girls I ever knew was blonde. Since I've bleached my hair, my life got much easier. I'll keep being blonde.

Stereotype much?

Tina (author) from Wv on April 27, 2011:

Well Thedude, don't rightly know....Never had a girl threaten me with a knife before....

Sylvia Leong from North Vancouver, Canada on February 05, 2011:

Yay! I'm brunette! Great Hub. :-)

Erin on January 22, 2011:

im a redhead.... and i love everything about me, and my hair! RED HEADS UNITE!

RII on January 02, 2011:

When I was young I used to get teased about being a redhead but when I went on holidays to Grease, China, Spain I would get so much attention from the guys, plus I have an hourglass figure. By the way I think being a dark redhead or a fiery redhead would be good, you either fit in or don't. ( it's better to have something special)

Lena on December 31, 2010:

I love all hair colors, but I love being a natural blonde! People don't assume I'm unintelligent because I'm blonde. Nowadays, at least where I live, most girls are brunette, so having red or blonde hair is much more unique. My vote = BLONDE!

Miss Lil' Atlanta from Atlanta, GA on December 21, 2010:

redheads are the most sexual out of the 3 hair colors. studies have shown (for redheaded women at least) that true redheads with the mc1r gene or whatever it's called on average have sex 50% more than blondes and burnettes. lol

vampirejello on December 10, 2010:

I'm a natural blonde (never dyed), but i recently dyed my hair red (fiery, un-nautral red). I've always wanted to be a redhead, fixed that. LOL.

SEXYLADY on November 27, 2010:

Im a redhead (natural)and i have 11 friends that are redheads and redheads don't do that it doesn't matter what color hair you have god made you that way and we should all be proud of what color hair we have, you don't have to make fun of redheads, brunnettts or blondes because we are alll living in this world together and don't need to make fun of eachothers hair color.....

Kerri on September 12, 2010:

Im a natural redhead and well i cant find a guy to committ cause of it all they want is sex and to have a fun time but im not datable apparently Im just a fantasy typical stereotypes with redheads

Nathan on September 02, 2010:

Brunettes are everywhere, especially now that dark hair is the trendy color to have. Real blondes are rare. Real redheads are rare too. So polls like this are stupid. Since most women (and men ) are brunettes, the results will not reflect fairly on blondes or redheads. As a guy I don't really care cos its the woman underneath the hair I love. I always notice a girl with beautiful hair, short or long, brown, blonde or red if its healthy and shiny. Dyed hair often looks fake, dull. and frazzled. I guess I like Natural hair of any colour, as long as the girl wearing it has a happy, kind smile and good outlook on life. Anyone that picks a girlfriend based on her haircolor first is kinda weird.

Mystery on August 17, 2010:

Its is easier for a blonde to dye her hair brown and look like a natural brunette than it is for a brunette to dye her hair blonde and make it look natural...that's because blonde is a more rare and more difficult color to create and make it look natural.

Blahhhh on August 17, 2010:

I am a blonde and I have a 4.0...AND IM NOT A NERD.

Blondes are NOT stupid!!

anonymous on August 05, 2010:

Im a natural blonde & I am definitely smarter than my brunette bff. I love her dearly but I have to be honest, I notice that I don't shave my legs as often becuae even if my stubble is showing it's so thin & light that no one not even my guy notices. My frien on the other hand has to bleach her mustach & even if she's freshly shaven her legs you can see tiny lil' black stubble all over her skin. I am not saying this to be mean or gross or anything jusy something I noticed. My granma was a redhead (she did not have freckles & her hair was the dark Auburn, brown, red, she was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in pictutes (I never got to meet her in person because she passed before I was born).

Tina (author) from Wv on July 21, 2010:

Whoa Jessica! Think we hit a nerve!.. Nevertheless in my poll on this page blondes are the last to be picked! I do agree that the bruneete is the new blonde. I have seen a lot of guys comments reflect how much they like the darker color hair..Thank you for your comments!

hubpageswriter on July 05, 2010:

I think all hair colors are beautiful and nice looking. They should be appreciated, no matter what the color even the greying ones. Good hub here, Ms Chievous. You forget the jet black ones, :). That's a lovely color too, in addition to redheads, brunettes and blondes.

Phillyfreeze69 on July 02, 2010:

Mr. Hugh Hefner founder of Playboy magazine picked a Redhead name Jaime Edmondson to be the first Playmate of decade as Miss January 2010. Maybe this will start a trend for women with red hair and a feisty personality. Very interesting data on hair preference.

kaitlyn on June 06, 2010:

brunettes!im one! luv it

Lisa on May 22, 2010:

I am a natural blonde ,of German desent , and really I think Brunettes and blondes are tied with me !! Not into red hair though unless its very dark :) My ultimate vote will be with brunettes though ! I have dyed my hair very dark before and really men seem to prefere it ,and yes they do treat you with more repect.. But then you have your men that are obsessed with blondes ,hmm interesting topic though ;) My fiancé actually was always attracted to brunettes ,but hes with me soooo ... BRUNETTES HAVE MY VOTE !!

Tina (author) from Wv on May 15, 2010:

You are a natural coppery redhead? I think I am jealous! You are def in the in crowd so far. Of the 243 people that have voted Redheads are the fav at 33%!

Ukubaby on May 14, 2010:

I'm a natural coppery red, intelligent and proud to be part of the clan. Occasionally immature little boys have 'ginger' comments aimed at me, but I generally receive compliments from anyone and everyone- not to mention turning a few heads along the way! 5ft7 with a slim build, i tend to be more attractive to the cleverer guys but that's just personal experience to be honest. I also seem to find myself going for older, and more mature guys that I can actually conduct an intelligent conversation with. Enjoying reading the thread by the way :)

Tina (author) from Wv on April 17, 2010:

Did you vote Jessie? So far redheads are in the lead!

jessie on April 17, 2010:

brunettes brunettes!

Yena Williams from California on January 23, 2010:

:) good idea!

Tammy Puterbaugh on January 07, 2010:

Pretty darn interesting, lets check out the men

rllgm on December 03, 2009:

Very interesting hub, however, considering burnettes are of the highest population in the world, so of course they would be more successful, on that note they are also false blondes and therefore the dumb blonde is actually a brunette. I believe there are more true blondes than redheads and what I mean by a true blonde is; they don't have to dye their hair so consider countries like Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Germany. As for redheads basically the celtic countries, but mostly Scotland although there are some dark redheads too. Just food for thought. Oh yeah, I'm a copper redhead with blue/green eyes and I like being a redhead and I've never had a male complaint yet.

Tina (author) from Wv on December 03, 2009:

Interesting words of advice Mort!

Mortgagestar1 from Weirton,West Virginia on December 03, 2009:

Life is indeed short and women are a smorgasboard as variety IS the spice of life! I have been with women of many diversities and backgrounds, All are special and are gifts for a time being or longer. Being of Scotch-Irish decent as an American, I tend to be drawn towards Gingers, yet the ultra petite busty women get my gastric juices flowing. My eldest sister says its a cultural thing as most women I grew up with were redheaded petites hourglassed. To each their own and I strongly advise men to get all of their oats sown prior to committing to only one!

Tina (author) from Wv on December 03, 2009:

Yeah I am thinking you redheads have mor fun than we know!

surrena from west palm beach, FL on December 03, 2009:

im a red-head and i love it!

Tina (author) from Wv on December 01, 2009:

Nekoyasha I am glad you enjoyed the hub. I think redheads get more attention then we realize. I was a redhead for a bit and enjoyed it! outdoorsguy I am glad you don't discriminate!

outdoorsguy from Tenn on November 30, 2009:

see this is what makes it so hard to date. I love all three LOL.

nekoyasha on November 30, 2009:

Hey, this was interesting... I am a redhead myself, and so far the only stereotype applied to me has been "hot tempered." Otherwise no one really makes any comments about my hair color. But yeah, about the hub :D. It was really great to read about the polls (what people really think). Thanks!

Tina (author) from Wv on October 06, 2009:

Ultimately peopl don't care.. but they do have their prefrences!

BeatsMe on October 06, 2009:

Really interesting hub. I think that most people don't really care about the hair color.

Tina (author) from Wv on October 06, 2009:

Oh Wendi M that just isn't right!!He's probably jealous becuse you are way smarter than he is anyway! A redhead wanting to be a brunette? Interesting!

Wendi M on October 05, 2009:

Oh, and in case you can't tell by my picture...I have red hair too!

Tina (author) from Wv on October 05, 2009:

Score One for the redheads! :)

emievil from Philippines on October 04, 2009:

Ms Chievous, personally I like redheads just because I seldom see that hair color =). If I'm a guy, I'd go for a redhead, bad rep or no bad rep =).

Tina (author) from Wv on October 04, 2009:

Jewels I think the stats refer to natural haircolor! I would say you have a lot going for you girl!

lyricsingray.. I agree I have always felt blonde gals got more attention! Stereitypes are hadrly ever true but as Gerg points out what would we do with out them...

Thanks to all for stopping by!!

Eimevil.. I am so surprised at the bad rep rehheads get! I always thought they got the extremely sexey vote!

Gregory S Williams from California on October 04, 2009:

Though I've never singled out a hair color - and I've dated women of each of these hair colors, I find myself consistently drawn back to blondes (my friends kept pointing this out to me!) Most blonde women I know I believe find they get TOO much attention and also have to work harder to be taken seriously for their intellectual capacity. What would we do without stereotypes? ;-)

lyricsingray on October 03, 2009:

What a great topic, in my experience, being a Tom Boy with a lot of male friends growing up, Blondes were 90% the favorite. Thank god I was a brunette, so I could still play soccer with the guys. LOL. Thanks-great Content, Kimberly

Jewels2940 from Martinsburg, West Va on October 03, 2009:

Is this natural hair color or just whatever your hair color is now? I just dyed mine dark brown with chunky blonde highlights...My natural is light brown, but I have been a blonde for years...I guess I have a few things going for me lol!!!

Tina (author) from Wv on October 03, 2009:

Well there is a poll.. I will move it up so it is more visible! Hazeem funny! Thanks Shame and wesley.. I I knew I could count on you for a mans perspective. Elisabeth a redheads perpsective is always welcome!

wesleycox from Back in Texas, at least until August 2012 on October 03, 2009:

Yeah, I agree with shame, lets get a poll going to see what men on hubpages think. I cast mine for the blonde.

hafeezrm from Pakistan on October 02, 2009:

Good and informative hub.

Reminds me of a joke. A club, whose memebers were long-time married couples, circulated to its male memebers a question: who are faithful, blonds or redheads? 95% replied: None but only Greyheads.
