An Enduring Promise

John is an actor, writer, and entrepreneur interested in the search for truth and meaning in the world.

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. Genesis 2:24

In the heat of the day

with the sun in full array,

I sat under the old oak tree

as the clock struck a quarter to three.

My heart was longingly captive for thee

because I was thinking of a day soon to be.

Covered by the coolness of the shade,

I dreamed of thoughts that some forbade.

Of a love that is not in fashion.

Yet it consumes my heart with passion.

It’s because of you.

It’s because of you.

I’m stuck on you.

I love only you.

There’s no sun or moon in your presence

they are eclipsed by your radiance.

My friends say it’s mad to be so obsessed

but they can’t fathom the love we possess.

Though they say our love is dead

I have decided of my heart to be led.

They say due to our colors it can never be.

But I won’t allow a lie to keep me from thee.

Because whether you were black or white,

you would be my soul’s delight.

So let not our love be bound by others’ hate

for in it are all the wonders God did create.

What is my life without you as my wife?

It is simply a tear full of sadness

and a day consumed by darkness.

It is simply a universe without the sun

or a battle that is never won.

Say yes, you by whom I am blessed.

And if you do, this will I make true.

One day soon on a hot summer afternoon,

I am going to take you by the hand

and walk to the altar.

There you will receive a golden band

that swears my love will never falter.
