We all know that person. I know you know who I am talking about. The one who wakes up looking fresh and elegant, while others need at least an hour and a cup of coffee before even waking up. The one who somehow manages to keep their head up and love life after a car splashes muddy water on them. The one who seems to have elegance running through their veins as if it's a part of their identity.
Today, I'm going to take you through the secrets of elegance. If you follow these seven simple guidelines, you're well on your way to becoming the embodiment of elegance, regardless of the prominent situation in your life.
1. Take Care Of Your Hygiene
The first and most important step is taking care of your basic hygiene. There's nothing less inviting than a dirty-looking person that smells equally as bad as they appear. So to build a good foundation for your identity, always start with hygiene.
Taking a regular shower is perhaps the easiest way to maintain a clean appearance and good hygiene. That doesn't mean you should necessarily shower twice every day. Just do so before you start to smell or look dirty.
For most people, this means showering daily or every other day at a minimum. However, because everyone is unique, some people only require a shower once a week.
Always wash your hands
This one seems quite straightforward, but plenty of people use the amenities without washing their hands afterward. If you are aiming for elegance, always make sure to wash your hand with water and soap – even when you think no one is watching.
Tip: Forming a habit of washing your hands takes any thinking out of the equation.
Fresh and clean clothes are essential
Wearing clean clothes free from visible stains and unintended irregularities gives a good impression of anyone. To further emphasize your classy style and personality, make sure to iron out any unnecessary wrinkles from your clothes.
Consider wearing perfume
This one isn't a must, but adding one or two sprays of perfume is one of the easiest ways to enhance your overall appearance at any time of the year.
2. Pay Attention To Your Manners And Body Language
Another vital aspect of effortlessly appearing as classy and elegant as possible is your behavior. While bad or inappropriate manners should always be avoided, good manners and correct body language can significantly improve how others perceive you.
The basics of good manners
While most of us know what good manners are, it's helpful to sometimes remind yourself of how you should behave. Here are a few examples you can follow to heighten your elegance:
When in conversation:
- Maintain eye contact.
- Let the other person speak without interrupting.
- Listen actively and respond accordingly.
- Don't be afraid to use your hands and motion to explain a subject.
- Emphasize the meaningful words in your speech to sound more interesting.
When in public:
- Keep a good posture.
- Look forward and keep your chin up when walking.
- Say thank you, please, and you're welcome when necessary.
- Show your appreciation towards the elderly through your actions.
- Keep a semi-neutral tone – avoid yelling, loud arguing, and quick and sudden movements.
How you can use body language to your advantage
Our body language consists of thousands of tiny expressions and gestures that often go unnoticed to the bare eye. However, a person's body language carries a massive impact on how others perceive them and what impression they give.
Try to visualize the type of person you want to be in the future. Now imagine being that person right now. How would they act?
Another helpful tip is if you have a role model or an idol that you look up to, following how they behave and express themselves can prove to be very beneficial.
3. Haircare Is Essential
One of the most visual things about us is our hair. It's what everyone else notices about you, and it's also one of the driving factors of our self-identity.
Hair that looks well and taken care of is key
No matter if you have short or long hair, if it looks well, you look well. Choosing the right hair products can help with having beautiful, lush hair. However, most often, our hair is a reflection of our health. So, to have hair that looks well and feels nice, it's essential to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. If your body is well, your hair is well – even without additional hair products.
Choosing the right haircut helps
What looks good on someone else might not suit you. It's critical to choose a haircut that you feel suits you best. There are a few ways to go about it.
The easiest but more costly option is to go to a knowledgeable hairdresser and let them decide what they think looks best on you. Keep in mind that the result might not be what you expected, though.
Another way is to grab a mirror at home and see how your face looks with your current hairstyle. Then see what you'd want to change and what you'd like to add. Finding hairstyle inspiration online can also help tremendously when searching for the ideal hairstyle.
4. Makeup Can Make Or Break Your Appearance
Makeup is at the top of the current fashion wave. The rise of social media has brought more and more attention to the beauty and makeup industry. So much so that many men are starting to wear makeup, pushing the industry in a more unisex direction than ever before.
Makeup isn't necessary
Makeup isn't required to look elegant. If you take care of your skin with a well-defined skincare routine and follow a good, well-balanced diet, your skin might look soft and even almost effortlessly. If that's the case, you should at least consider leaving makeup behind.
Natural-looking makeup is often perceived to look best
If you decide you aren't ready to ditch all makeup just yet, going for a natural look might be for you. In fact, when it comes to makeup, most people think a natural look is the most appealing as opposed to unnatural makeup styles.
Too much can look messy
If you love doing your makeup, that's okay too. As long as it doesn't make you look messy or too trashy, you should be well on your way to an elegant identity.
5. Dress Well And Dress Proper
The right clothes can compliment you and significantly improve the way you look. So what exactly are the right clothes for you and how should you dress?
Simple and bold takes you a long way
Simple clothes are always the safest option when looking to create any fashionable style. If you stay away from wild patterns and complex color combinations, you are almost guaranteed to look good.
Here are a few tips to follow when creating any simple style:
- Stick to basic colors like black, white, grey, and beige. Pastels and neutral colors can add depth and help you avoid flagrant fashion mistakes.
- If you aren't sure, use three colors in your full outfit at most. Three colors are enough to create depth into outfit design and too little to go overboard.
- Never combine two strong patterns if you aren't absolutely certain it will look good. There aren't many situations where a checkered jacket goes well with striped trousers.
Overdressing is better than underdressing
When it comes to elegance, you want to avoid underdressing at all costs – even if it means that you risk being slightly overdressed sometimes.
There is nothing less elegant than showing into a formal event with a baggy top and casual sweatpants.
The right accessories make your style personal
Adding accessories and jewelry to your outfit is an easy way to own the style. Wearing the right necklace can complete almost any top, regardless of the neckline arrangement. A scarf is often a suitable accessory for spring and autumn jackets. And a nice watch can elevate any summer look without breaking a sweat.
6. Choose Quality Over Quantity
Always choose quality over quantity if you truly want to embrace your newfound elegant personality. It's almost impossible to be authentically perceived as an elegant person if you're always known to choose the cheapest alternatives just to have them in your possession.
The standard in today's world is quantity
Just because the world currently operates a fast-fashion trend where everything is made to look good instead of last doesn't mean you have to follow the trend. Understanding that companies do this to increase sales is essential. It brings up the appreciation towards companies that prefer value and customer well-being instead of their profit margins.
Quality lasts and tends to look better
Even though a plastic wrapper on top of your countertop can imitate the look of natural marble, it doesn't feel and last like marble. In the short term, cheap and disposable materials might be easier on the wallet. Still, in the long term, you'll definitely seem more elegant and be better off choosing quality over quantity.
7. Confidence Is The Cherry On Top
Nothing is more elegant than a confident man or a woman who knows what they're about and admits when they aren't familiar with the subject. Although you don't need to be confident to be elegant, it sure does help.
Confidence or arrogance
Be very careful not to mix confidence with arrogance. Arrogant people are often disliked and perceived as being full of themselves. Instead, believe in yourself and your abilities, and never put yourself above anyone else. Remember that true confidence is appealing and inclusive, while arrogance is disliked and pushes others away.
Now that you've gone through the list, you should have a clear picture of what elegance looks and feels like. Then, all that's left for you is to go out there and make it happen.
