50 Smart Woman Quotes for Woman Empowerment

MsDora, Certified Christian Counselor, has spent four decades empowering young and adult women to pursue positive, productive womanhood.

How the Meaning of "Smart" Evolved

The first known use of the word was in the 13th century, originating from the Old English smeortan; or the Old High German smerzan, meaning:

  • Verb – to cause or be the cause of a sharp stinging pain; to feel or have such a pain.
  • Adjective – quick, active, clever (from the notion of “cutting” with wit or words).

In the 18th century, smart appeared as a slang meaning:

  • Adjective – sharp, fashionable, stylish.

In the 20th century, smarts meaning “good sense” became regular usage. Now, smart and women are a perfect fit. The following quotes reveal smart thoughts about themselves, other women, men, beauty and fashion, mass media, children and youth.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF WOMAN !

Anonymous on November 17, 2018:

Its not because its all women in the pictures, or of certain cultural backrounds, othewise that would be just as "biased" and "unfair". Hope that helps.

Ann Carr from SW England on February 08, 2017:

Love the quotes about children and youth but the quote I like the best is about girls 'Tell little girls they are smart, funny, or interesting instead of pretty. ' It's a far better idea to say that because they are worth so much more than 'pretty' and if they're not pretty then they have qualities to outshine that.

This is a fascinating, well structured hub, Dora; a list I'd like to frame and show my daughters and grandchildren.

I enjoyed reading all these quotes about smart women. They are an eccletic mix and some I like better than others. I especially liked the ones about children and youth. We definitely need to make sure young girls embrace their smartness and not just be absorbed with their looks. It is sexy to be smart and intelligent.

I believe that women are much more attractive when they exude a quiet confidence in themselves and their Creator. It is amazing what happens to us when we connect to the ultimate power source of the universe, and realize our own potential!

Steven Philip Lindquist and aliases in nature from Minneapolis, Minnesota United [divided] States of the Americas on May 02, 2016:

as many a thing never read and shared in the communal nature of sirens and listeners to the ears and eyes of other temples than the houses they belong in, truth would be they may go back in time to be the minds they used to be and then just gifted for a time being, you would not want to know all the lives of the whole organism at one time in unison. Or listen to it all in the hum drum melodies of the outside worlds.

Faith Reaper from southern USA on May 02, 2016:

Hi MsDora,

Excellent quotes here you have shared from smart and beautiful women.

I particularly identify with the one by Ruzwana Bashir, being I believe it is so important to be our naturally feminine selves no matter how super-successful, smart and effective we are ..not having to dress like a man to be considered smart.

Another one I love is the one by Suzanne Vega about our sense of humor, being kind and our character.

The photo of all the beautiful women is perfect in showing that intelligence and beauty go hand-in-hand.

Blessings always

Chitrangada Sharan from New Delhi, India on May 02, 2016:

Wow! Lovely article with such wonderful quotes.

'Smart' is a difficult word to define, especially if it is with reference to women. I use this word very often and I believe a woman's beauty is enhanced if she is 'smart'. Beauty with brains, intellect and sharpness while still retaining a compassionate heart is how I would like to think 'smart' means.

I enjoyed going through the inspiring thoughts of these accomplished women that you have mentioned above.

Thanks for sharing this interesting hub!

Vandana Patel from India on May 02, 2016:

MsDora, thank you for sharing. Each and every woman can relate and connect with this hub.

Mary Wickison from Brazil on May 01, 2016:

Hi Dora,

There are many quotes there I haven't read before and also from many people I don't know. Just when I thought they were all going to be empowering ones you have the one by Anna Held about not getting a man if you're too smart.

My mother always told me I would never get a man if I bit my nails. LOL

The quote from Michelle Obama really hit home with me as I am sure it did with many woman. We should be higher up our own to do list.

Wonderful list of quotes.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on May 01, 2016:

Great reading! I think I like the Jennifer Lopez one best! Just trusting your gut feeling. It is important to listen to what others think of course and how can we make a decision without knowing all the choices but then we do have to digest it all and come to our own conclusion.

Fun stuff! Shared.
