PO Box 408

Pendleton, South Carolina 29670

Friends of the Park meets every third Monday at 6:30 pm at Pendleton United Methodist Church in the social hall. Everyone who is interested in the future of our Veterans Park is invited to attend. We welcome new members and also those who just want to visit and learn what all we do for Veterans Park.

Friends of the Park is an organized group of Pendleton area citizens interested in making Veterans Park the best it can be. Friends of the Park is a 501C3 organization and works closely with the Town of Pendleton who owns the land and with Pendleton Recreation Association who provides youth sports.

In recent years, we have contributed generously to the baseball fields for fencing, etc. and proudly completed the Veterans Memorial.

  • Ball Fields
  • Pavilion
  • Picnic Shelters
  • Trotter's Trail
  • Barrett's Place Playground
  • Veterans Memorial

Who is "Friends of the Park?

In February, 2005 a group called Pendleton Pride In Motion decided they wanted to build a community playground. Upon completion of Barrett's Place Playground in October 2005 a need was seen for an organization to continue to work for the betterment of Veterans Park. Friends of the Park was formed the following year.

Barrett's Place Playground

In Memory of Barrett Beck

Pendleton Pride in Motion sponsored the building of this playground in memory of Barrett Beck, a twelve year old Pendleton resident who tragically lost his life too young, and other young people in our community whose lives we want to remember. Through volunteer efforts and donations, the Pendleton area community built a playground. This large playground includes a climbing wall, play campsite, boat shaped sandbox and lots of swings, slides and monkey bars. This children's activity place stimulates the imagination, while providing a safe and attractive area for our children to play.

Attention: All Users of Barrett's Place Playground and Trotter's Trail

We have had some vandalism and continue to have a lot of litter. We need for everyone that uses the park to assume responsibility for it and help to keep it clean and safe for our children.

Please encourage your children and/or group to help by picking up litter while they are there.

Also please report any misconduct or vandalism to town hall at 646-9022. Thank you.

Join the Playground Patrol to help keep it safe and clean for all the children.

Trotter's Trail

In Memory of Justin Trotter

The "walking trail" was named Trotter's Trail in memory of Justin Trotter. Justin was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 12 while a student at Riverside Middle School. In September 2004, after 2 years, Justin lost his battle at the young age of 15. His love for nature and the outdoors has inspired friends, family and Friends of the Park to honor his memory by building this 1400 foot long trail that will wind through the woods adjacent to Barrett's Place Playground. It has park benches, a bridge and is handicapped usable. The 6 foot wide trail has an asphalt surface for easy mobility and is wide enough for two wheelchairs.

Veterans Memorial

In honor of all our Veterans

On Veterans Day November 11, 2014, the Veterans Memorial was dedicated with a very moving ceremony. This memorial was built using only materials "Made in the USA" and with funds raised by Friends of the Park.

The Veterans Memorial committee of Friends of the Park under the leadership of Joan Kelly along with the Town of Pendleton made this dream come true.

Even more importantly, FOTP delivered a check of nearly $34,000 to the Town collected through Step Up To The Plate fundraising efforts over the past years. Along with FOTP, the PRA and the Town will be providing funding for these upgrades to the ball fields. We are all grateful to the volunteers and donors that have made this day possible. Pendleton Elks Lodge Donates $1,000 for new benches for Trotters Trail.

Trotter's Trail received two new benches which will be installed at the May 19th work day.

At its regular meeting, April 26, the Pendleton Elks Lodge presented $1,000 checks in support of each of two community organizations, the Supper's On Us Pendleton (SOUP Kitchen) and The Friends of The Veterans Park.

During the presentation Carrie Gibson, Elks Lodge Exalted Ruler, praised both organizations for their important contributions to the welfare and health of Pendleton citizens.

One of the objectives of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is to assist deserving local charitable organizations such as the two honored last month in Pendleton.

Barrett's Place Playground Work Weekend was a huge success and the playground was re-opened for visitors on Monday. We will have to schedule another Work Day soon so please call Nancy if you would like to help.

Many people donated food or money so we could feed to workers and that was greatly appreciated. There were also volunteers who worked hard the weeks before in preparation for the Work Weekend.

Thank you to all who came to stain/seal the wood, dig mulch away, and gather supplies.

Thank you, Duke Energy

Thank you, Duke Energy

Duke Energy Donates to Playground

Jason Walls of Duke Energy met with representatives from Pendleton Pride In Motion and Friends of the Park on December 30, 2008 at Barrett’s Place Playground. He proudly presented a check in the amount of $1,000 to the playground from Duke Energy. Children, Parents and Grandparents who were playing in the Playground joined in the celebration. Mr. Wall’s handed out red Duke Energy Volunteer T-shirts to the children and made a big hit to all those present. Duke Energy is no stranger to Barrett’s Place Playground, a playground built by more than 1600 community volunteers in 2005. Duke Energy believes in giving back to the community and they were very involved in the beginning with making this dream come true. In the past three years, volunteers and generous donors have continued to work to make Veterans Park the best it can be. The Playground Area now has three Picnic Shelters which are rented for Birthday Parties and other gatherings. The proceeds from the rental allows the Town Of Pendleton to maintain the playground on a daily basis. The organized group of volunteers, Pendleton Pride In Motion’s Friends of The Park, gather together twice a year to do the bigger maintenance jobs and keep the playground safe and long lasting for generations to come. The money that was so generously donated by Duke Energy will be used to help make the Playground even better. They also plan to provide volunteers for the Spring Maintenance Day. PPIM, Friends of the Park, and the Town of Pendleton are most appreciative of all their help.Veterans Park has continued to improve over the past years with the recent completion of the Pavilion which houses a concession area, office for Pendleton Recreation Association, and rest rooms. Trotter’s Trail has also been a welcomed addition and plans are in the making to complete the entrance to the trail in 2009. The main fundraiser for Friends of the Park is the Freedom Fest which is held at Veterans Park on the Saturday before July 4. Their next meeting is planned for January 19, 2009 at Pendleton United Methodist Church at 6 pm and all interested citizens are urged to attend and get involved in making Veterans Park the best it can be.

Yard Sale Raises $1,217 for Veterans Park

Fran Butler's family worked very hard this past weekend holding a Yard Sale at Fran's home. They wanted the money to go to Friends of the Park for Veterans Park because they knew that is what their dad would have wanted. Friends of the Park is very grateful to Fran's family for this generous contribution and this money will be used wisely in his memory.Thank you!

In Memory Of Fran Butler

Passed Away October 25, 2008

I had often seen Caroline Jamieson and Fran Butler walking around town. They always looked so happy that I would usually take a second look. It wasn't until we started the build for Barrett's Place that I actually got to know him. He was one of a group of men who showed up weeks ahead of the build week to get everything ready. There was a lot of pre-work that had to be done and Fran was there. He continued to volunteer with the group of "granddads" who got together periodically to do maintenance at the Playground and at Trotter's Trail. Fran didn't miss many Friends of the Park Meetings and was always willing to help where needed. He helped with fundraising by selling merchandise at many events.Fran was known for being our "Uncle Sam" at the 2008 Freedom Fest and did a super job for Friends of the Park.Fran Butler made a difference in Pendleton and I am proud to have known him. He will be missed!

The Memorial Service held by Clemson Little Theatre was a beautiful tribute to a Great Man!

Fran's sons and their families are having a yard sale Friday and Saturday and want to donate the money to Veterans Park. This is such a wonderful thought on their part and greatly appreciated. Please come to 603 Bailey Ave Fri and Sat beginning at 8 a.m.

This was made by Janusz. Thank you!

Freedom Fest

A Fundraising Event for Veterans Park

Freedom Fest '08 was a big success thanks to all our many sponsors and volunteers. We estimate that about 2,000 people were there to "salute our heroes", eat great hot dogs and hamburgers, watermelon, snow cones and homemade baked goods. They also enjoyed Bingo, Horseshoes, Childrens Inflatables, Face Painting, Fun Merchandise and more. They received a free balloon and a button when they walked Trotter's Trail and they won great prizes at The Great American Turtle Hunt held at Barrett's Place Playground! It was a time to be proud to be an American and especially proud to be a Pendletonian!

My husband was a part in helping with the establishment & building of the "Medal of Honor" walkway in one of our Parks(City of Parks) now he is involved with moving all the Veteran Memorials in town into this park and have a real "Veterans Park" ...5*s
