On Sunday morning, Azerbaijan's artillery, rockets, drones and combat aircraft began a series of attacks on Armenian positions in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, just two months after clashes in July left at least seventeen dead. The shelling and air strikes were apparently followed by ground attacks.

The Armenian people are ready to strike a worthy blow at the enemy. The Republic of Armenia is the guarantor of the security and independence of the Artsakh Republic. And the Republic of Armenia today stands behind Artsakh with all the potential of its population and state system. We will make every possible and impossible effort to keep the borders of our homeland inviolable, to protect our freedom and independence

— Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia

Fierce fighting involving tanks, aircraft and artillery broke out between Azerbaijan and Armenians Sunday in a conflict over land that’s been disputed for decades.

Azerbaijan started bombarding along the contact line separating the two forces and shelled civilians including in the region’s capital, Stepanakert. Though just minutes after the war started, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said it launched a “counter-attack” and accused Armenians of firing on its military positions. This claim has been denied by Arayik Harutyunyan, the President of Artsakh recently.

"We will win this war. Every day I admire our compatriots living in Artsakh, Armenia and the Diaspora, who volunteer and want to volunteer. I want to thank everyone, I express my condolences for our victims," Harutyunyan said in his statement

Armenia has already appealed to the International Court of Justice, European Humanitarian Council, the UN, NATO and several other international organizations to take immediate steps against the Azerbaijani aggression. The Security Councils have already expressed their support towards Armenia upon getting the reports. The reports also verified the claims that Azerbaijan has deployed Syrian militants to fight against Armenia.

Azerbaijan has violated the international humanitarian and war laws by starting the war and targeting civilians of Armenia in the name of counter-attack. As the international media reports back our claim, Turkey and Azerbaijan were planning this unprovoked war for long by deploying Syrian militants to our border. They have banned social media platforms in Azerbaijan and don’t let journalists cover the war because they fear to be exposed. We have called upon national and international media to come, see and cover the truth. They are not attacking along the borders of Artsakh, but the borders of Armenia. They are targeting the areas that are not included in the 2008 UN General Assembly. Hence, their efforts to justify their actions under the said assembly are mere lies. We are totally prepared to win over them in political, diplomatic and military arenas”, said Dr. George S. Earl, the chair of the committee presenting Armenia’s report for the several Security Councils.

As of 29th September, Armenia reported 84 casualties whereas Azerbaijan has over 370 manpower loss along with the destruction of significant military equipment.

The Armenian people are ready to strike a worthy blow at the enemy. The Republic of Armenia is the guarantor of the security and independence of the Artsakh Republic. And the Republic of Armenia today stands behind Artsakh with all the potential of its population and state system. We will make every possible and impossible effort to keep the borders of our homeland inviolable, to protect our freedom and independence. As of 1994 The Republic of Armenia, a signatory to the ceasefire agreement, will take necessary actions to ensure the physical security of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and to impose peace on the enemy”, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a statement.

Senior U.S. officials barely made any note of the crisis. Paul Stronski wrote for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace that “the administration of President Donald Trump has yet to issue a policy on the South Caucasus region, creating a vacuum that other powers—including Iran and Russia—appear eager to fill. The lack of senior level response to the latest violence shows once again that Washington does not see the Caucasus as a priority.”

The current Azerbaijani offensive may be a bid by Aliyev to stabilize his government by seeking to satisfy nationalistic demands for military escalation and victory, while diverting attention away from domestic problems including economic recession brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic and collapsing oil prices.
