Map of West Europe what is happening there
What is happening in Western Europe
Welcome to our article (127) World news and views diary, August 2022.
This is my diary of what I have seen happening in July and August 2022.
In Europe, the war in Ukraine continues, see what I found today on the internet.
Shortly before 3:20 p.m. on Aug. 9, Nikolay Abbasov, a resident of Saki, near Crimea’s western Black Sea coast, heard an explosion. Walking to his window, he filmed a cloud of smoke rising in the distance. At almost the same moment, a Russian influencer, Diana Andreeva, was enjoying the beach in nearby Novofedorivka when she turned her camera to capture the cloud, which was rising from Saki air base, home to the Russian Navy’s 43rd Independent Naval Attack Aviation Regiment.
About 50 minutes later, both would capture two massive explosions at the base, capping an alleged attack claimed by Ukraine that killed at least one person and injured 13 others, according to Russian officials. The blasts left at least eight military aircraft destroyed or significantly damaged and wrecked parts of the facility, according to defense sources, military analysts and a review of satellite imagery. If Ukraine was responsible, the attack would be one of its most audacious of the war, playing out in front of residents and tourists deep into Crimea, which Russia seized in 2014. (End of quote)
I believe that this war is getting nowhere, both sides lose people and destroy properties. It would be good if Putin stops this war because it is getting nowhere. The Ukrainian cannot stop fighting because they are being invaded, so, they must keep fighting, since they do not want to be under Putin’s rules. Now let us look at something else.
In UK, we have seen that the UK prime minister Boris Jonson was forced to resign, so, we are going to miss this colourful character from the news soon, since a new prime minister is going to be chosen in early September.
In Italy nasty things are happening, see what I found on the internet today.
How racism haunts black people in Italy
In our series of letters from African journalists, Ismail Einashe writes that many black people in Italy feel that racism is not taken seriously.
For Italian-Eritrean filmmaker and podcaster Ariam Tekle, there is no doubt that the recent killing of a disabled Nigerian street vendor, Alika Ogorchukwu, in Italy was a "racist murder".
This is despite the fact that local police have ruled out racism as a motive for the 39-year-old's killing in the seaside town of Civitanova Marche.
He was reportedly selling handkerchiefs when he was chased and beaten to death. None of those who witnessed the broad daylight attack appeared to
A suspect - a white man named as Filippo Claudio Giuseppe Ferlazzo - has been ordered to remain in jail as the investigation continues.
A police investigator said Mr Ogorchukwu was attacked after the trader's "insistent" requests to the suspect and his partner for spare change. (End of internet quote)
What has happened in Italy may not be called racism. We can say that when you go to live in another country, you occupy the space of the people that live there, so, they react when they feel abused from the newcomers. Now let us talk about America.
This August Taiwan has the world attention
USA visit to Taiwan and Donald Trump.
In USA, we wonder if what they are doing in America is the right thing to do. Because of the things that are happening right now, the 3rd of August 2022. Anyhow, what we are talking about here is the visit of Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. Some people are saying that it is not the right time to do it, because this may upset China. Since China views Taiwan as a renegade province of China and not an independent state.
The history of Taiwan is hard to understand, but I believe that Taiwan was a province of China before the communist party took over mainland China, most of the people that did not like the communist rules ran to Taiwan and tried to become an independent state. Taiwan population today is about 33 million people that want to be independent from China. Anyhow, we are all waiting to see what happens next. This is one of the live update news on the net.
Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, landed in Taiwan overnight despite China warning her not to visit. She is the highest-ranking American official in 25 years to visit the self-ruled island claimed by China. China has announced it will conduct military manoeuvres in retaliation for her presence.
Anyhow, China did their military manoeuvres and made the world worried, but in the end, nothing else happened. So, everything seems to be postponed, and we are worried for the future, because China may want to take Taiwan by force in the future.
Now let us look at the USA, where they are playing a political game with Trump, the FBI has conducted a search in one President Donald Trump residences. Hereunder is a short report, taken from the internet.
Live updates: DOJ search warrant shows Trump being probed in connection with espionage statutes
The warrant authorizing federal agents to search former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence was unsealed Friday by a federal judge, after the Justice Department requested that it be made public.
Federal authorities sought a range of highly sensitive documents, including 11 caches of classified materials, indicating that the federal investigation was examining possible violations of the Espionage Act, according to documents unsealed Friday.
I believe that this is happening now, because in early November this year, there will be a midterm election. And then President Trump wants to go back as president in 2024. This FBI search makes Trumps party look bad, so, they can lose votes and the election.
Global warming and the Australian floods
Now let us talk about global warming.
There are reasons to believe that climatic warming, has changed the way the weather behaves. So, there are extreme temperature all around the world. Because of the high temperature in summer, there are fires burning in many countries, destroying properties and sometimes lives. Then when it rains, it can rain for several days in a row, this causes flooding that can damage properties and if people are not careful can drown. These things did not happen as much in the past.
For instance, in Australia this year we have had lots of rainy days, and some houses have been flooded several times. It is so bad that these people may have to relocate to higher grounds. This flooding is caused by the sea level rising and excessive rain. Which are both caused by global warming.
Then there has been extreme temperature in Europe and lots of fires, in England they had a day with over 40 degrees temperature, which has never happened before. Hereunder are other things that are happening these days, they are all due to climatic warming.
And there are more problems reported on the net.
Stark images from around the Northern Hemisphere show the severity of droughts gripping countries across Europe, as well as in China and the United States.
A UN report has warned that droughts have become longer and more frequent since 2000, with climate change the major factor. Here I want to add this observation, while in the northern hemisphere they have severe droughts, here in Australia are worried about floods. So, definitely the weather these days is extreme.
Wildfire spreads rapidly in California's north
Hundreds of firefighters in California are battling the largest wildfire to spread in the state so far this year.
The McKinney Fire, which started in the northern Siskiyou county on Friday, has already burnt 21,000 hectares (52,500 acres), the state's fire service said.
At least 2,000 residents as well as trekkers on the Pacific Crest hiking trail have left the area, authorities said. Homes have been destroyed.
Now let us look at East Africa
Crisis in East Africa
While the Western world is preoccupied with the rising cost of gas, inflation, and the war in Ukraine, East Africa is in crisis. UN News reports that Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan are facing the worst drought in decades.
I believe that this will cause famine in East Africa animals will starve and people will leave and move to other states and Europe. This will cause another wave of unwanted emigrant to Europe, that can cause problems to the countries that they go to.
These excessive temperatures happen, because of the global warming. Today the world starts doing things that can stop the global warming to increase, but can we do enough to return to normal, I do not know.
Africa dead animals toll from the drought.
Commonwealth games and other news
The commonwealth games have been held in Birmingham. This was good news, because it has given us a break from the bad news around the world. Anyhow, as usual the Australian teams have done well, they have won lots of medals. They are at the top of the list with, 67 gold medals, 57 silver medals, and 54 bronze medals, followed by England, Canada, and India.
Golf, Australian Cam Smith is doing well, He won a tournament and was number 1 for a few days.
Tennis, Nick Kyrgios is trying hard, sometimes he wins and sometimes he loses, he seems to be outspoken and gets in trouble for that reason, he has also some injuries problems, so today he lost to Taylor Fritz, as shown hereunder.
Nick Kyrgios was thrashed in straight sets by American Taylor Fritz at the Cincinnati Masters this morning AEST as his running feud with umpire Renaud Lichtenstein and a potential knee injury took centre stage.
This year there were a lot of discussions at government level, where the NRL finals would be held, in the end NSW won. So, Queensland NRL fans feel disappointed, because the NRL finals will be held in NSW, we hope that next year can be held in Brisbane.
Paul Green death
Rick Green, the brother of former NRL coach Paul, has spoken of his family's overwhelming sadness at his death.
Paul died on Thursday morning at the age of just 49.
"We don't know the full extent of the way in which he touched people's lives, but he did so because of his unique qualities as a person and the way he approached life," Rick said.
"He will be remembered with such fondness. It is a sad happening.
I believe that this article is becoming too long. See you next time.
