Actually, you can see Indian women, men and even children in the pictures in full traditional or western dresses, Sari, Jeans & Shalwar kameez just walking or standing in the water at Juhu Beach, Mumbai. A little bit of history lesson before I proceed further. I thought women in America started wearing bikinis only since 1947 but after some digging here is what I find out.

Outlawed and Embraced in USA

Reard’s bikini was introduced to U.S. markets in 1947, just one year after its debut in France. While consumers were certainly curious about the scandalously small amount of fabric that comprised the bikini, initial sales of the swimsuit were slow. Many Americans were shocked by its scantiness, and the bikini was even outlawed as a form of public attire in many U.S. cities (Alac 2001). It would be nearly 20 years, at the dawning of the sexual and moral revolution in the late 1960s, before American women truly embraced the bikini. But after that, there would be no turning back. American women--and men--began a love affair with the bikini that has lasted to this day.

Why Indian women don’t wear Bikini or swim wear at the beach, it’s not that Indian women has no courage, it is just Cultural, Religious & Family restrictions. I do respect that because every culture has its own way of living in the society. Bikini or swimwear in western culture is part of daily life but it is not openly practiced in Indian or other cultures

Now let’s try some guessing game to find out the reasons, why Indian women don't wear bikinis.

Are Indian women ready for beachwear?

Family Customs in India

Indian Fashion-Asian Fashion-Saris-Salwar-Lehenga-Churidar-Saree Blouses

1- First reason I believe is religious & then culture too. Women in India are supposed to cover their private body parts, although it is changing but some Indian women still cover their heads with Dupata ( Head Scarf ).

2- Very few Indian Teens or young females from rich families started wearing bikinis but you hardly see them.

3- Even if bikinis become widely accepted, you will not see many Indians wearing bikinis or swimwear for men in near future. Indians are very conscious about their skin color. Many females & males use facial bleaching creams, Vicco Turmeric is one of the famous one. Complexion question in India is more complex then bikinis.

When 23-year-old Riya Sengupta, went on a holiday to the exotic islands of Andaman & Nicobar, she was the only Indian woman in a swimsuit while others on the beach either wore salwar kameez or saris.

Sneha Sunny from India on September 09, 2011:

people in western countries wear bikini because they want tanned skin. But in India, most of the people don't like tanned skin. I really don't like the fact that they give superiority to white skinned people only and that for only the reason that they are white skinned. Anyway, I enjoyed your hub. I'm glad people from other countries like Indians and Indian culture... :-) It really warms my heart. :-)

India is changing.... but slowly!

MythiliK from India --> Switzerland on November 04, 2010:

Just only one answer for this question. It is our CULTURE. Nothing more to explain above this.

I have to admit that India is also changing slowly with the impact of western culture and fashion. But still I hope didn't lose its root values.

It is not only bikini. We have lots of other culture, which we respect. You cannot find an Indian couple kissing in public (and here by couple I mean married ones. The boyfriend-girlfriend culture is yet to get spread in India). Still we do have joint family systems, and a lot more to add.

Every country has its own uniqueness and India has its own culture and tradition.

maria23watson on November 04, 2010:

This is nice hub showing the tradition of India i will like to know more information on it so please guide me if you got time.

olgalednichenko on October 24, 2010:

bikini is not a typical indian wear - at least not in public beaches. Reasons are not religious though, but mostly cultural. also, asking a question - such as "why don't indian women wear bikini on public beaches" - is akin to asking -"why don't catholic women or greek women wear saree and saree-blouse on churches" - or "why don't greek-women wear lehenga-choli - specially with mirrors or why don't southern baptist women women saree or why don't women-from-red-states in unites states wear saree an and saree blouse when they can look HOT - while being blond as does Julia roberts, Gisele, and Heidi KLUM

also: in the same vain: " why do american men think saree is erotic or not kosher or a bit too exposing, because it exposes the midriff and the navel" ?

are you with me ? - its about cultural predispositions.. not some shariah - not hinduism - but culture

also: yes. MALLU AUNTY AND STUFF -:) well, that's called sexual deprivation and in childhgood days - a SECRET CODE - not being caught - when watching nude - meant " oh, aunt photo hain?- translation :

desire says - get photos that expose.. but fear of being caught, asking, saying... etc - evolved into a secret code - a word to communicate .. which is the SAME as when you read craig list ads - in the roommate or house mate sections -> try decoding the code for DRUGS :

hope it helps - and yes it would take some time to parse..

Thanks for reading and commenting. I don't know too much about Indian girls. I find out during my visit to India that single girls are very cute but the married women were out of shape.

Please come again. Have a wonderful weekend.

imissukhan on June 19, 2010:

I agree with Mr. Nice words. The girls of sub-continent donot care their figures after delivery of 1st baby.

Mr Nice (author) from North America on April 27, 2010:

No pretty woman,

I don't like Indian aunties....hahaha. Every time I see a pretty girl I fall in love all over again......hahaha. Indian girls are cute before marriage, after marriage they become same like the pictures you see in the Indian aunties galleries. I mean after first child they go out of shape. You want to know the truth, I like oriental ladies. See you tomorrow, good night.

very well said.. you won't find bikini wear in India on a beach. You might find in Indian movies and such .. but in real life very rarely. At the least it won't be in public beaches.

Hi Green Lotus,

Thanks for the info, I saw this news too & I was going to add the story & link. Attacks in Goa Beaches are common I believe this is not the first time

Ministry blamed on tourist wearing bikinis but no matter what kind of dress a western woman is wearing they are harassed in all over India by local men.

Hillary from Atlanta, GA on February 04, 2010:

I had to revisit this hub MrN because I read a blog today that said the Indian state ministry blamed the rise in rape cases in India to women wearing bikini's at the GOA beaches! Small, weird world, no?

Mr Nice (author) from North America on February 01, 2010:

Hi yenajeon,

Thanks for viewing my hub, please come again.

Yena Williams from California on February 01, 2010:

Great Hub! This has been true in Korea too, until recently. Now there are women sporting bikinis everywhere. Which makes me happy =)

Mr Nice (author) from North America on January 31, 2010:

Welcome Green Lotus,

If you like traveling then visit India for sure. When you visit Juhu beach you will not need a bikini. It is good idea to leave your bikini for the beaches in Florida.

Atlanta, GA is beautiful. Few years ago I lived in Roswell and worked at Peach Tree.

Hillary from Atlanta, GA on January 31, 2010:

Hello Mr Nice. What a Nice hub. I'd love to visit Juhu beach one day, but I'll leave my bikini at home :)

I will be publishing hubs about India and Thailand soon.

Love, peace and happiness for you and your family on the new year. Happy new year.

Tatjana-Mihaela from Zadar, CROATIA on December 30, 2009:

Well, well, publishing again. Congratulations, Tony. Glad to see you here!

Mr Nice (author) from North America on December 30, 2009:

Hi stricktlydating,

You are very welcome, as I mentioned in the hub it is just a coincidence that I have the relevant pictures to support my story about the women & bikini in India. Picture quality is not that good because these pictures were taken with a 35mm camera. Pictures itself are very good but after I scanned their resolution or quality changed.

I will be adding more info to update in few minutes. I like traveling & Australia is on my wish list. I was joking with the hubber blondepoet, I told her I am coming to Australia.

She welcomed me to visit Australia, may be one day. I will be publishing a hub about my trip to India soon, keep watching & come back again.

Happy holidays.

StrictlyQuotes from Australia on December 30, 2009:

G'day Mr Nice, I love this Hub, and thankyou for answering my question. Your photos are wonderful and it certainly looks like the women, as well as the men and children enjoy spending time at the beach, just as we do here in Australia. Wonderful! Thanks again and Happy Holidays!
