Who are Bernie Supporters?

Butter is at the Table

Good Morning, Breakfastpoppers. Today is Tuesday, May 31, 2016. Our new friend, Butter, is at the table this morning. Butter has been giving a great deal of thought to supporters of Bernie Sanders. At one time it would have seemed impossible to imagine an aging Socialist running for President of the United States garnering as much support as he has. Sad to say, times are changing and what Bernie has to offer has dramatic appeal to many people who love him, but haven't a clue what he is all about. Butter has asked for the pleasure of your company this morning. She would like to talk about the "Bern", and if possible get to the heart of the problem. Rest assured, Bernie and those who adore him are a huge problem for this country. Butter is preparing home baked butter biscuits and homemade strawberry jam. I will be serving Irish coffees to accompany the meal. Butter and I hope to see you soon.

An Unanswered Question

Thank you all for joining Pop and me for breakfast. Let's get right to Bernie. A reporter from Univision asked Sanders about Socialism's failure in Venezuela. Let's put great emphasis on the word "failure." Surely, Bernie's followers know what it means to fail. In fact, it is quite likely that they are intimately acquainted with the term. In any case, the would- be president refused to answer the question. He was facing an informed audience, unlike the crowds here in the states that adore him. The reporter was Leon Krauze of the Spanish language network Univision. The audience was acquainted with Venezela's failure to thrive. Clearly, those feeling the "Bern" are uninformed about the complete failure of socialist policies in Venezuela. It is also entirely possible that, Bernie's followers have never heard of Venezuela. It is also perfectly reasonable to think that they may also be unaware of the existence of another failed socialist experiment in Greece. Bernie's follower's don't have any use for facts. Information is a dreary pain in the butt. They like what they hear and it is good enough for them. They might never have heard of Socialism, but that doesn't stop them from wanting all the free stuff.

Free College

Whose Got the Money?

Bernie tells his supporter's that free college is a right they have earned. How they earned it is a complete mystery to me, but if Bernie says they earned it, they did. When he brings up this issue, his young and uninformed followers light up with glee and passion. Imagine being able to go to college for at least four years and more likely ten years for free. Perhaps, these would-be scholars would like to hear about what happened in Louisiana when they introduced free tuition. Louisiana calls their plan the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students. The program uses tax dollars to pay full tuition in addition to some fees at any of Louisiana's public universities. It really is a free-for-all. All students qualify if they have a C average and at least an 18 on the ACT. The truth about this program is that somebody has to pay for it. The student is not responsible for the cost, but the taxpayer's are. Let's face it, offering free education increases the numbers of students who suddenly like the idea of more schooling. The problem begins to rear its inevitable ugly head when costs rise and the available money shrinks. Subsidized programs like this always incur higher costs. The Taylor Opportunity Program has doubled in cost since 2008. Smaller schools really suffered under this plan. When the state budget hits rock bottom, the schools, particularly the smaller ones, get hit hard. Bernie and friends have to come to grips with the cruel fact, that there is no such thing as a free ride. Using other people's money to provide "free" stuff leads nowhere.

Get the Facts

If only all voters were well-informed about the issues. If only voters were well-informed about their candidates beliefs. If only voters were knowledgable about the candidates track records. If only, we had high information voters, we might just end up with a president who was qualified to serve. We aren't even close to that dream, but we still have to try. Norman Thomas said, " The American people will never knowingly adopt Socialism, but under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened." If Bernie were to win and become president, he can tell the nation that he always said he was a socialist. He will be telling the truth. If Hillary were to enter the Oval Office, she will say she is a liberal Democrat, but she will be, in fact, a socialist. Bernie's supporters don't understand Socialism with its inevitable pitfalls. Hillary's supporters don't understand veiled Socialism. Both of these groups will cast their votes not really understanding what is at stake. The rest of the electorate will be at their mercy. All the knowledge in the world may not be enough to stop Socialism under the guise of the liberal agenda. Let's hope the good guys win.

This land is your land

This land is my land

This land was born to be free

Please come fly with me......

Dear suzette,

Sanders is incorrect when he uses Scandinavian countries as examples of successful countries under Socialism. Bernie needs to study the facts. Denmark, for example, considers itself to be a market economy. In Scandinavia, the means of production are primarily owned by private individuals, not the community or the government. Resources are allocated by the market and not the government.

breakfastpop on June 03, 2016:

Dear suzette, Actually, Socialism in Scandinavia is largely a myth perpetrated by people like Sanders. Scandinavian countries are poor examples of Democratic Socialism because the means of production is primarily owned by private individuals, not the community to the government. The resources are allocated by the market, not the government. They do offer universal healthcare which does not make their system anything like what Bernie advocates. The Prime Minister of Denmark recently reinforced the fact that the country is clearly a market economy.

ahorseback on June 03, 2016:

Bernie is ALL about the actual immaturity of youth ,their incomplete and undeveloped brains and highly impressionable vacuum of ideological student-hood , AND everybody knows that the ideological ineptitude of youth is shallow , self serving and most times petty. I have a question for all , what happens to the donated millions of dollars donated to a losing candidate ? Please , look at the personal history this man . Look at his record , look at how his leadership in the Veterans Affairs Committee of Senate ,that he ran for eight years FAILED our veterans totally......... !

VET THE CANDIDATE - how shallow ,his entitlement driven candidacy has been from the beginning . 1960 --- JFK 's candidacy " Ask not what your your country can do for you , But what You can do for your country "!

Today - "What can I get for ME "? Enough said !

suzettenaples on June 02, 2016:

I get your point and Sanders should be asked to explain Venezuela's failure with socialism. But Venezuela has been an unstable country with a dictatorship and of Chaves which destroyed their economy. Socialism in Venezuela did not have a strong foundation on which to grow and thrive. The Scandinavian countries are examples of the success of socialism done right. It depends where you look.

I agree

College shouldn't be free, but it can be made affordable. But, in any case it should be earned and not something that is just giving away the taxes paid by people that aren't going to go to college.

Free college would really be an Entitlement and totally different from the current use of the word. Today, they call SS and Medicare Entitlements, but these programs are really paid by the people that will become the beneficiaries of the programs.

What has a high school student contributed to become the beneficiary of a free college education? Nothing.

IMHO, more work needs to be done in K-12 to make a high school degree the equivalent of a 2 yr college degree. Then college would only be 2 years instead of 4.

Until the K-12 education becomes worthwhile in preparing students to take care of themselves and a family, college is just a continuation of a failed education system.

Students that have done well in college did it in spite of the public K-12 education systems, as opposed to benefiting from it.

The same is true for the elite colleges, like Harvard. These schools do not make brilliant graduates. They only admit brilliant students into their schools.

GIGO, an old computer adage.

Garbage In Garbage Out.

I would coin the adage BIBO

Brilliant In Brilliant Out.

As technology and life gets more complicated, it seems that the educators want to make the students work less in school. Less homework, less focus on grades and the attitude that everyone deserves a high school diploma.

We should take our lead from the Asians who value education, and take it seriously.

It seems that Bernie's followers like the easier road of mediocre performance and equal benefits is better than excelling about the cloud of norm.

It is the Union Mentality on a National Level.

Unions make sure that everyone gets the same money and sets the level so that it ensures more work, and less demanding performance.

They reprimand their members that try to produce more, because it cuts the amount of work available for the workers. If people gave more performance at work, that would reduce the amount of work available, and that may reduce the need for x number of workers.

see you at the Inn.

Good news, we just got Dunkin Donuts in S Cal. There goes the diet.

breakfastpop (author) on May 31, 2016:

Dear horseback,

You have valuable first-hand knowledge of Bernie. If only those that follow him around like senseless puppies had any interest in hearing the truths you have to offer. See you at the Inn. It may exist only in our mind, but it is a great place to be.

ahorseback on May 31, 2016:

Hey people ! I am from Vermont , so is Bernie , I have known of his leadership failures all the time I've lived here ! I was born in Vermont and I'll tell you this Vermont was better off fifty years ago than it is today under Bernie's Senatorial "leadership " . Vermont today is in about an equal standing as all former socialist countries now scrambling for capitalism to come to there doors , you know ? Those that Bernie uses as examples ! Hey Breafastpop ! Nice one !

breakfastpop (author) on May 31, 2016:

Dear Mike,

I just lost my appetite. No food for me at the Inn!

Old Poolman on May 31, 2016:

But college will be free when Obama decides all student loans should be forgiven and paid for by the tax payers. That will happen before he leaves office.

breakfastpop (author) on May 31, 2016:

Dear taxlarry,

These days college is a very expensive form of brainwashing. I wonder if parents are truly aware of what they are paying for. College was never meant for everyone. There are trade schools that do a better job of preparing a young person for the future. See you at the Inn. Nothing is free there, which is just fine with me.

taxlarry on May 31, 2016:

I am trying to figure out why some kids want free college educations when they have emotional issues if someone puts up a sign that says "Trump 2016" or if they want exams cancelled if they don't have time to study because they are too busy protesting. They shouldn't be in school, period. (Even if they pay for it).

breakfastpop (author) on May 31, 2016:

Dear maven,

I think you need to copyright that definition. See you at the Inn.

Dear billy,

And I support your right to support Bernie! See you at the Inn!

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on May 31, 2016:

I'll always support your right to speak your mind and the passion with which you speak it!

breakfastpop (author) on May 31, 2016:

Good Morning Mike,

I agree with you. It does start in the early years for the first group you are talking about. They grow up "protected" from ever competing. Competition makes people feel bad, and we don't want that. The schools then take over, and these days they are reinforcing laziness. They are preparing these kids to work for the collective. Working to achieve for oneself is considered narcissistic and selfish. The other group could have pulled themselves out of the McDonalds for life crowd, but it was too much trouble. I don't think a day goes by that I don't see strong evidence of a nation that is so dumbed down, the way back seems almost impossible. I hope I am wrong. See you at the Inn. Butter is really looking forward to meeting you.

Old Poolman on May 31, 2016:

Good morning Pop and Butter.

I see the Bernie supporters falling into two main groups of people.

Group One: Those who came from the "Everybody gets a trophy" crowd. Many still live with, and depend on, their parents into their late 20's and early 30's. They have never had to work to pay a bill, and most likely never will. Many are professional students who stay in college while accruing huge student loan debt while collecting degree after degree. The idea of leaving school and going to work terrifies them. They are banking on the fact that some Socialist like Sanders will forgive all student loan debt sometime in the near future.

Group Two: Those who didn't go to college or learn a skill, and are locked into minimum wage jobs for the rest of their lives. Their favorite and most loved word is "Free". They only have to hear the word "Free" one time in a campaign speech and their vote is sold. They see Socialism as the escape route from an otherwise dead end world. They would have no problem at all with being a worker bee in a system where all their basic needs are provided.

So who is to blame for these attitudes? We can start with the parents but it goes much deeper than that. Our school systems have contributed to this belief system so they have been brain washed from the day they started school.

I don't really see any of this changing until our broken economic system is repaired.

breakfastpop (author) on May 31, 2016:

Good Morning Jennifer,

You are absolutely right. If you run out of money just print more. If you run out of money, raise the taxes on those that actually work for a living. In the end, the printing press goes dry and, as you point out, the money is worthless. Say good-bye to America. See you at the Inn. There are more Irish coffees there.

breakfastpop (author) on May 31, 2016:

Good Morning Tom,

What happens when other people's money runs out? The Bern crowd will cry foul! See you later at the Inn.

breakfastpop (author) on May 31, 2016:

Dear tsadjatko,

The fence was three feet high! Competence is now considered to be overrated!

Jennifer on May 31, 2016:

Pop and Butter, you know the saying ...If it's free, it's for me. I believe we will all feel the "Bern", well at least the hard working will. Team Sanders can care less about facts, where the money will come from. They will just want to print more. Could care less that our dollar will be worthless as long as they are good and everyone is equal.

Good Lord I'm glad this is Irish coffee, this bartender needs to make it extra strong!

Tom Whitworth from Moundsville, WV on May 31, 2016:

Pop and Butter,

The love of "other peoples money" is a strong attractant for the greedy.

The Logician from now on on May 31, 2016:

Well I love gorillas, and I don't understand why they couldn't have had a keeper try to distract the Gorilla while the "sniper" had a bead on him (I don't know, maybe they did), that's what I would have done. BUT...

How in the world can they have a pen that a 4 year old can get into? Are they nuts? The persons responsible for the design of that pen and safety should be the ones to be shot. I guess they were only concerned about the gorilla getting out and didn't care that children could get in. Is there no one competent at their jobs anymore?

breakfastpop (author) on May 31, 2016:

Good Morning tsadjatko,

You are right, of course. It's a sad day for America. When I wake up in the morning and listen to the news, I feel lost most of the time. Just this morning we have angry protestors furious that a gorilla was killed in order to save a child's life. Where am I? I'll see you at the Inn and we'll toast to a bygone time.

The Logician from now on on May 31, 2016:

America? ... It went over the cliff of corruption, media propaganda and political elitism long ago. The country is falling, heading for the crash at the bottom of the ravine of socialism and equality (equally miserable). Just a matter of time, too late to stop the onslaught of brainwashed, immoral masses with no respect for the principles the founders of this country put forth in our constitution which they are shredding daily.

That's who Bernie Sander's supporters are, FACILITATORS of the end of America as we and those who went before us knew it.
