What You Don't Know About Jackie Chan: Interesting Facts About A Very Nice Person!

Actor, acrobat, martial artist...philanthropist?

Jackie Chan is well-known, worldwide for his hilarious, stunt filled movies. When you see a Jackie Chan movie, it is easy to see that he is a talented, friendly, outgoing guy. What is not easy to see is the fact that he is a very serious philanthropist. In 1988, he established the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation, and he has been working hard to help folks in need ever since.

Dragon's Heart Foundation

One charity project that Jackie Chan holds near and dear is his Dragon’s Heart Foundation.  He established it in October of 2004 to help children, the elderly, and people with disabilities in the impoverished, outlying areas of China. The Dragon's Heart Foundation’s main project is building schools in these isolated places.  Jackie Chan is not an absent overseer of this project.  His participation is hands-on.  During the past four years, he has made numerous tours of these remote, impoverished areas.  He brings greatly needed supplies along with a message of love, hope, and support to poverty stricken children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

All Children Deserve An Education

Jackie Chan and Dragon's Heart are dedicated to the idea that all children deserve an education. This is a tremendous gift to these children and their families.  In China, many poor families cannot afford the fees (about nine US dollars a year) to send their children to school. Very often, the country dwelling children live too far away from school to be able to go.  Other children must work and can’t go to school. Jackie Chan helps all of these children get an education by building modern schools near their homes to make it easier for them to attend. The new, centrally located Dragon’s Heart Schools make it easier for as many children as possible to go to school.  The schools are open to all children, and the Foundation even gives the children warm clothes and school supplies if they need them. To date, Dragon’s Heart  has built twenty-one schools and residences for the elderly. The funding to achieve this comes from donations to the Dragon's Heart Foundation.  All of the donations go directly to help the children, elderly and people with disabilities and to build schools and senior centers.

It's Easy to Help!

Many classrooms, churches and other groups around the world have helped with this effort. The total funds raised by the second round of fundraising as of September 29, 2008 is US $44,346. I hope you, your groups, churches, schools, and other organizations will support Dragon’s Heart. I believe it is an honest and worthwhile charity, and it is easy to help! All you need is a dollar and a little imagination! Jackie Chan has set up a matching funds project so that more schools can be built faster. He calls it Build a School For a Dollar. It is very straightforward and just what it sounds like.  If you donate a dollar, Jackie Chan donates a dollar!  In this way, the funding for the schools can be doubled and the schools can be built, replaced, and repaired twice as fast.

Sondra Rochelle from USA on May 30, 2013:

What a neat guy. Thanks for letting us know more about him.

justmesuzanne (author) from Texas on May 17, 2013:

Thanks, Sweetie! Now that Jackie Chan is older, his movies are becoming more interesting and complex. He is doing more directing and introducing new, young talent. I liked his recent historical movie, 1911, about the revolution in China. His role was not large, and there was not a lot of stunt action, but the story was interesting. I think many of his fans were a little disappointed because this is not a funny movie, but I am glad to see him branching out and showing more of his talent.

sweetie1 from India on May 17, 2013:

Hi Suzanne,

Thanks for introducing me and others to the wonderful philanthropic work that Jackie Chan does. I would not have known about this were it not for reading this hub of yours. Hopefully his good works will continue to impact generations of kids in China who get the chance to attend school and prosper in their lives. That will be a great legacy of his to leave behind him. Up, useful and interesting votes.

Thanks, Kalpana! I haven't seen that one yet. I am looking forward to it. :)

Jackie Chan is great in his role as an aging caretaker, battling his own demons, in the new movie Karate Kid.

It is really good that in real life he shares his good fortune with so many, especially after his own hard upbringing.

justmesuzanne (author) from Texas on July 06, 2010:

Thanks, Hari! :)

Hopefully others will follow his example.

justmesuzanne (author) from Texas on March 29, 2009:

Yes, you are so right, and lots of people in this country still don't even know who Jackie Chan is - or if they do, they just think of him as a comic. He gets a lot of press in China for his good works. My students are all very proud of him! :D

ColdWarBaby on March 29, 2009:

This is wonderful and very heartening.

Why isn't this the kind of news that makes "celebrity" headlines?

These people, who make obscene amounts of money for basically playing pretend like children, should follow this example one and all. They should also make every effort to be sure that it becomes public knowledge. People of great celebrity have the ability to sell more than cars, cosmetics and fashion. They can inspire compassion, integrity and generosity. Their opinions and actions are often inspirational, especially to younger generations.

I think this story is a bit more worthy of note than some pop stars most recent trip to rehab.

justmesuzanne (author) from Texas on March 17, 2009:

Thank you! I think he is just terrific! :)

That would be wonderful! Thank you! :)

jim10 from ma on November 24, 2008:

I have always loved him as an actor. I have been watching his old films before he came to the U.S. for years. He always seemed very nice and genuine. My kids and I would watch his cartoon show. He always had little bits about himself at the beginning of the show. He always seemed very thoughtful and cared about others. I'm not surprised about him helping schools that is great. I'm glad you made a hub or I never would have known. Sometime I will get my kids to make a piece of art to send in.

justmesuzanne (author) from Texas on November 22, 2008:

Read his autobiography, and you will really be impressed!

Rebecca Graf from Wisconsin on November 22, 2008:

I always did like him. Now, he has risen in my eyes.

Thank you for the info.
