Trump's Socialized Food Stamp Box Is Coming to a Home Near You

I've studied psychology, criminal justice, addiction therapy, and journalism. I use my voice to help those who are not heard.

Socialized Food Boxes for Recipients of EBT. What Are They?

President Donald J. Trump announced that he and his cabinet believe that SNAP/EBT should be replaced with a "Blue Apron"-esque system. This means that SNAP recipients that receive over $90.00 each month will no longer have the ability to choose what foods go on their dinner table. Nevermind the fact that some have food restrictions, children are often particular regarding the foods that they eat, and we allegedly live in the "land of the free."

With these food boxes, families would receive food that the government deems suitable for human consumption: i.e. powdered milk, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned meat, and other boxed and/or canned foods. Apparently those living in poverty do not matter, at least not to the point where they can choose what food items they consume.

Who will Trump's Food Replacement Plan Harm?

According to Newsweek, as of July 7, 2017, "42.6 million Americans were receiving SNAP benefits during the current fiscal year, down from 44.2 million in 2016. The 2017 figure is the lowest since 2010, when 40.3 million people were on food stamps. The number peaked in 2013, at 47.6 million (Djansezian. K. 2017)."

As you can see, the number of individuals receiving food stamp assistance has significantly lowered in the past few years. So why is it so important that Trump suddenly cut food stamps? The Trump Administration claims that, this "plan" would save billions. However, he has no problem spending as much money as possible for a wall and defense. This Administration is ready to take rights away from millions of low income families, by choosing their food. Does this ring any bells? History? Anyone?

If this plan passes, not only with low income families suffer; corporations will as well. For instance, Wal-mart, Kroger, Sam's, CostCo, etc. any store that accepts food stamps will lose a large portion of their profits. We will see a major monetary struggle in the United States if this were to happen. Well that's the opinion of this writer.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

It is apparent that Donald J. Trump does not care about the poor, and he has no idea what it is like to live in poverty. Even if his plan does not pass, it is now evident that he does not have any plans to help those in need. This "president' is out to help himself, whatever is good for Trump is good for America, right? Isn't that how it usually goes?

So what could go wrong if this plan is passed (besides the obvious answers)? We've seen what happens when America steps up and acts as if they know how to govern the world. War. Outrage. Riots. Hate. The United States likes to think that they have the answer for everything, but when they meddle; it only gets worse. Perhaps the first few months those receiving the "Harvest Box" will receive their portions of government consumables, perhaps the food will even be edible. What happens with the government conveniently "forgets" that food needs to go? Millions will starve. Now this is only a "what if", but it's a "what if" that needs to be addressed. We all know that America has a hard time keeping its word. If Trump is okay with keeping brown people out of the country, I think he's okay with letting the scourge of the earth (poverty) go away; in whatever means necessary. Yes, that is a big jump; but that's why this is an opinion piece.

Looking at it from a business standpoint, it's possible that the "mom and pop" shops that accept EBT, stores that accept meat purchases for those on EBT, farmers markets that accept EBT, and even large corporations like Wal-mart will take a massive hit. Some stores could close, while others struggle. This plan is bad just waiting to happen! It could damage the already wounded American market.

Food for would you react if it was you and your family that could no longer choose what foods you eat. How would you react to the shaming that will occur when these boxes are delivered to your home? I thought so.

Let's Break it Down

  • This plan would NOT safe money. When you factor in the food itself, paying people to box the food, delivering the food, upkeep on the vehicles, paying people to drive the vehicles...there are no savings here. Believe it or not, most people receiving food benefits only receive enough to stay alive. Not matter what stories you've heard, they are only trying to eat...just like you.
  • If you've ever had to shop for food with an EBT card, you know it's very embarrassing. The majority of individuals receiving food stamps are not proud, they are not "riding the system", and they are not abusing these benefits.
  • Is public shaming ever the answer? Having someone deliver your free food let's those around you know that you are receiving welfare, this is embarrassing and you should not be shamed because you are poor.
  • Businesses will suffer due to a lack of food stamp money coming is as revenue.
  • Some small businesses could shut down.

Now let me ask you are question. Do you think it's right to push the poor down when they are already down? Why not reach down and help them up, love your fellow man.

I'll Leave You With This

Do you believe in God, in good, in empathy, in sympathy, being kind, loving one another, any of these things? If so, don't you think those living in poverty deserve a little happiness? Even if that happiness is having the ability in choosing what they eat on a daily basis. Spread love, not hate. Build bridges, not walls.

bradmasterOCcal, I just wrote a long reply to you, and for some reason it didn't take. So here goes again.

I respect your right to choose your own religion or refuse them. I understand that things may have happened in your life to make you not believe in God, I don't judge you for that. However, you said, "then ask that God why people are put through hell". I have a few things to say regarding that. First off, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. Cliche yes, but true. Second off: Did you ever stop to think about the fact that if their is a God, then Satan is real too? The Bible tells us that Satan is temptation, hatred, lust, etc. God is love, he doesn't make mankind hurt one another. We know that the Bible says that God created the world in seven days. Perhaps a day in the Bible isn't a literal day, 24 hours. People take the Word way to literal. You have to think outside the box. On the seventh day, He rested. Maybe it's still the seventh day, and Satan is using the earth as his playground. Rape, murder, molestation, crime, etc. is a horrible thing; but God has nothing to do with these things. Do you think the God that gave his only Son to save us would allow all these crap to happen? I'm sure this isn't getting through to you, because you don't believe. So I'll just say, read Revelation. Just give it a read.

As far as "why are there so many poor people in the country, and why do we want to bring in millions more" goes, there are so many poor in the US because the system is broken! As long as the government creates tax cuts for the rich and the richer, as long as the middle class bares the brunt of these tax cuts, there will be people living in poverty in this country. The majority of the individuals receiving food stamps in the US are white Americans, and the majority of recipients have jobs. People start myths and lies saying otherwise. If you needed food, shelter, water, clothing...would you ask for help? To the second part of your question, we should bring millions more in because WE STARTED THE PROBLEM! They are our responsibility because we can't seem to stay out of everyone's business! We start wars, we go into other lands like we own everything, we cause all of these problems then turn away in indignation. This is unacceptable behavior. Every politician has done it, and unless the American people do something to show that we are tired of their behavior, they will continue to do it and get away with it.

I think I'm running out of room but I'd love to keep this conversation going. If you have questions, comments, or a fix for these issues. I'd love to hear them. Have a great day/night.

Thank you Nadia. :D

There is no God, and if a God did exist then ask that God why people are put through hell.

As for the article, the real problem is why are there so many poor people in the country, and why do we want to bring in millions more of them?

Great writer! Read others of yours. Keep it up!

Michelle Battle (author) from Michigan on February 16, 2018:

Beautifully stated. I couldn't agree more.

Nadia Ribadu on February 15, 2018:

Indeed! Since Trump's election, I hope it's really sunk in with voters that "elections have consequences," and I hope they realize it like never before and will become politically involved, and will never again sit out an election. Many Trump supporters are so mesmerized by him that they're still ignorant to the fact that what he's doing will hurt THEM the most! He's gone after Food Stamps, they have cut Medicare. Social Security will be next, which will affect many elderly white voters, and the elderly-retired in general. All these actions are designed so that a few very wealthy people can have an unneeded tax cut and widen the socio-economic gap.

Michelle Battle (author) from Michigan on February 15, 2018:

Thank you. It is ironic that they cry "big government", but are actually the thing that they claim to hate. It's a sad reality.

Nadia Ribadu on February 15, 2018:

And they (the GOP) complain about "big government"? What's bigger government than deciding what people can eat? Excellent article!
