The Most Annoying Habbits of People On Public Transport

Public Transport

With the globe's growing population, the ever decreasing fossil fuel supply and lack of investment in renewable energy, public transportation is a necessity for many. Even those who can easily afford private transport, the lack of parking and congestion forces them to use public transportation. I am a major advocate of public transport, I am in no way pro car but I am pro respect and pro consideration, which, recently I have noticed a considerable lack of when using public transport.

This article may be regarded as a critique of the breakdown of social values in contemporary Western societies or just an angry Internet rant, either way, I hope you enjoy it.

Mobile Phones

When mobile phones first became available to the general public they were a status symbol, we all remember or have heard stories of people having a loud mobile phone conversation in public to show off the fact that they own a mobile phone, only for it to then ring.

But now everyone has one and they seem to think it is their god given right to have the most loud, inane, pointless and annoying conversation with their equally annoying friends with a total lack of consideration for other passengers. For some unknown reason overhearing just one half of a benign conversation seems worse that listening to it in its entirety, maybe it's something to do with symmetry.

I would happily pay extra for a ticket on a bus fitted with mobile phone signal jammers, like they have in prisons, which, after listening to a blow by blow account of some bottom feeder's weekend for an hour doesn't actually sound that bad.

Feet On Seats

This is probably the one I find the most annoying. People putting their dirty shoes on the seats, the reason we wear shoes is to protect our feet from the filth on the streets. If you wish to put your dirty feet/shoes on your furniture at home, I can't stop you, but please show a little respect when in public places or on public transport.

Dust, dirt, oil, dog mess, spit, vomit, urine, blood and more is present on most streets and roads and when people put their feet on the seats it is now on your clothes, nice!

Now I'm not advocating some kind of slave ship ankle chain system but surely there has to be some kind of happy medium between that and the current situation.

Taking Up More Than One Seat

One ticket equals one seat, pretty simple right? Using an extra seat for your bag and forcing other people to stand is just rude and selfish. Or maybe you will see people sitting on one seat deliberately blocking the other, maybe it is for their imaginary friend?

We all need to eat and I'm not saying people should not be allowed to eat on public transport but they should do it considerately. Noisy, smelly and messy food should only be eaten in a restaurant or at home. And when you finish how about putting the empty wrappers in the bin instead of leaving them on the floor or seats?

Playing Music On A Celll Phone

There are many genres of music, for a reason, not everyone likes the same stuff. I love music, I love loud music but I understand that not everyone does and that they probably don't like what I like, but not everyone thinks like this. Early in the morning when I am still half asleep or at the end or the day when I am falling asleep I like that unavoidable journey to be as quiet and pleasant as possible and I respect other passengers who may feel the same way. If you want to listen to awful, commercial, tinny sounding music on public transport, use headphones!

Cleaning Orifices

If people want to be disgusting, I cannot stop them, it is a free country right? But picking your nose, ears, teeth, scabs, spots in front of me and then discarding it on the floor, please!

Queue Jumping

Even before you board the bus or train you will encounter another annoying habit, queue jumping or people pushing and shoving their way in front of you, even when you were waiting there patiently first.

This puts you in a difficult position, either you allow others to push in front of you and risk not being able to board or you join in a dystopian 'survival of the fittest' scrum to board, pushing and shoving the weak and frail aside to ensure you get to the front of the queue.

Not Giving Up Disabled Seats

Old, pregnant and disabled people are pretty obvious and although it is not the law to give up a seat to them it is just kind and decent. It just seems extremely rude and arrogant to sit there deliberately ignoring someone in need. If you see them standing and you are sitting in a disabled seat be a good citizen and let them have it!

This is awful. I cannot believe this can be realistic in 21st century. This is because of lack of intelligent people. Only intelligent people use which will help you to be the best in university and avoid stupid people in the future

Some people can't respect others.

Good to hear I'm not the only one gets annoyed by other people on the bus!

Paris_00 on September 18, 2014:

I'm a college student, and I use public transportation every single day to get to and from school. Not only do I encounter very irritating people everyday, but the buses look disgusting!! Food and trash everywhere...

Makes me want to puke -_-

For me, people talking very loud is the most annoying thing ever!! Like you can talk, but keep it down!! Nobody wants to hear your conversation about what happened at a party last night!!

You've presented a great list here. People are odd creatures. Enjoyed!

Dr Mark from The Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil on December 29, 2013:

I do not drive, so when I can't take my bike I have to use a bus, and these are all spot on! The worst one is definitely the music on the cell phone. Not only is it inappropriate, it is usually of horrid quality so the idiot who has it on turns it up really loudly to compensate.

Oh, by the way, I saw your comment about solar cars, and I am into solar too! I use solar to dry my clothes.

SpaceShanty (author) from United Kingdom on December 26, 2013:

Hi billybuc, thanks for your comment. I am a major advocate of public transport but not anti car, I mean 7 billion people can't all drives cars, the planet would just die. Maybe when all cars are electric, powered by solar energy it would be feasible but that won't happen until there is still oil to profit from. I just wish people on public transport would be more considerate of others, well actually in every aspect of life, but hey, that's a discussion for another day, or maybe another Hub!

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on December 26, 2013:

I haven't ridden public transport for a very long time, but I recognized all of these in your hub. There really are some fairly disgusting people out there in the world; luckily I don't have to share my car with any of them. :)
