An senior air warrior and political observer who has the pulse of the region and can sense a change when it comes.
In 2014, history was created when the Bharatiya Janata Party-led by Narendra Modi won the general election with a clear majority. The Congress which had been ruling the country for almost the last 60 years was defeated. Congress always played itself as a secular party in contrast to the BJP which it painted as a communal party. It was never explained by the Congress that despite their so-called self-professed secular image they had let the minorities in particular the Muslims remain the economically most deprived community in India.
The left parties shared the "secular" tag with the Congress party and were also nonplussed. They made their plan to throw out the BJP in the 2019 erection. In this election, the results belied their expectations, and the Congress, the left, and other anti-BJP and so called secular parties were completely shattered with the BJP once again winning a comfortable majority. Congress party which during the days of Nehru used to have almost 350 seats in a house of 540 was reduced to less than 50 seats in the last two general elections. The Congress which has now become a prisoner to the leadership of the Nehru- Gandhi family with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi at the helm could not stomach the win of the BJP- a party they detested.
They hatched a plan along with like-minded parties to create situations in the country that would show the BJP in a poor light. They also planned to launch and then channel a mass movement that would make the BJP government resign.
Such things are easier said than done, All the same, the Congress and the left parties in company with so-called secular parties like the JDU and the Aam Aadmi Party decided to launch agitations against the BJP government.
Agitations and rioting: a Devious Plan
The BJP can be faulted however. on one point that they were in a hurry to change the political map of India. They carried out much-needed changes like the abolition of the special status of Kashmir by abrogating article 370. They followed up with the removal of triple "talaq" from Muslim personal Law. The last was an obnoxious provision allowed by the Congress party to continue despite protests from the Muslim woman. This is a form of divorce where a man could divorce his wife by just uttering the word "talaq" three times. The BJP abolished triple talaq.
The BJP also brought in an amendment to the citizen's act. In substance, the act stated that any Hindu who was persecuted in the neighboring Muslim states of Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan would be given citizenship in India. Secondly, to detect the mass scale infiltration of the minority community into India from Bangladesh and other countries it was proposed to identify the migrants and send them back. Both these are laudable acts as it is well-known that Hindus and other minorities like Christians are persecuted in Pakistan and even in Bangladesh. The extent of discrimination against the minorities can be seen from the fact that when President Macron enforced his laws in France the Muslims in Bangladesh began to attack the houses of the Hindus and Christians. One fails to see the logic of this.
As I have written the BJP can be faulted that they brought these acts immediately when they came to power in the second term. Maybe if they had introduced them gradually after discussion, the fallout would have been less severe.
The opposition started the first agitation in Delhi when Muslim women were instigated to block the roads in the capital for months together. The aim was to force the government to take back the citizenship law. Later antisocial elements took control of the agitation and rioting commenced. This became more pronounced when President Trump was visiting India. The idea was to show the BJP government in a poor light and hope that President Trump will put some pressure on Modi. However, Trump did nothing and in due course, the agitation and rioting collapsed.
The Congress and the other parties also began to fish in the troubled waters of Kashmir and began to instigate the Kashmiri leadership to start an agitation against the central government on the issue of the status of Kashmir. Modi government however had the upper hand as it downgraded the status of Kashmir from state to union territory and also bifurcated it into two parts.
Seeing their plans collapsing Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi had a meeting and were wondering what to do. They latched on to the new farm laws which had been promulgated by the government. It is worth mentioning that these laws were earlier drafted by the Congress government and the BJP only put them into effect.
The Congress chief minister of the state of Punjab, Captain Amrinder Singh was given the task of galvanizing the Sikh peasantry to start an agitation against the government. Thousand of Sikh farmers from Punjab have now surrounded the capital and are demanding that the farm laws be repealed. In the agitation slogans of Khalistan are also hard and nobody is able to explain why 90% of the farmers all over India or not agitating and have accepted the laws but not the Sikh farmers.
The situation is turning explosive and there does not appear to be any solution in sight. The Sikh farmers are being supported by the Congress party and other so-called secular parties. These groups are also arranging food for them and encouraging them to continue the agitation if required for many months. All this is to embarrass the government. Even the Sikhs in Canada have been able to prevail on Prime Minister Trudeau to issue a statement supporting the Sikh farmers. There are 4 Sikh ministers in Trudeau's Cabinet. One can see the compulsions.
The agitations against the Modi led BJP government though involving a minority, yet because of India's large population has thousands turn up to register their protest. There does not seem any way out as even if the Farmers agitation goes away the opposition led by the Congress will start an agitation on any other matter. In India which is the second most populous country in the world numbers can always be drummed up. The crucial fact remains that the opposition has not been able to come to terms with its electoral rout and so they try these extra-constitutional methods. I am afraid this is not the best way to come back to power as you are alienating millions who do not want anarchy and chaos.. Rahul Gandhi is unable to see the writing on the wall.

Thank you Sangre, nice of you to have commented. Yes, it's a sad state that riots and agitations should be a way once you are defeated in an election. That's the reason I prefer some form of authoratative rule.
Sp Greaney from Ireland on December 05, 2020:
Some government parties just can't accept defeat. Very sad. Even here our government parties always try to destroy the other side but thankfully it isn't done through riots or demonstrations.

Thanks Peggy, Political problems are similar in democratic countries.

Thanks John it's something similar to Donald Trump not accepting his defeat though he's polled a couple of million votes less than Biden.
Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on December 02, 2020:
It seems that there are political problems in many places around the world!
John Hansen from Queensland Australia on December 02, 2020:
An interesting article, MG. It seems there are warring political parties in many countries, and the loser rarely just bows down and accepts election defeat.
