Terror in Orlando Nightclub

When he's not writing poetry or political articles, Ralph fills his time by researching various topics that are influencing society today.

I woke up this morning, started my coffee, and grabbed my iPhone to check out the news; no different than any other morning. I opened my favorite website and the extra large bright orange headlines literally stopped me in my tracks. A terror attack on U.S. soil, the largest one since September 11th, had occurred at a nightclub early in the morning. Over 50 human beings were being reported as dead and another 50+ being reported as injured in some manner. As I scrolled down, reading each headline, my stomach roiled. Multiple stories the shooter, his background, his religious affiliation and possible causes followed the top story. Conclusions were already made on the motivation for the senseless killings, and with the shooter being dead at the hands of law enforcement, these conclusions will likely stand and become 'fact.' And despite the tragedy being less than 12 hours old, it's been politicized in several ways.

Omar Mateen

Omar Mateen, 29, pictured to the right is the deceased shooter. Interviews of his ex-wife took place today, she stated that Omar was violent and mentally unstable and beat her repeatedly while they were married. Their marriage lasted for only a few months and her father actually had to physically come remove her from their home as she feared for her life. He had previously been investigated by the FBI on multiple occasions. His weapons were legally owned as he was a trained security guard. He had a degree in Ciminal Justice and was well organized and prepared for attack. He was a U.S. citizen and a Muslim; multiple reports are that he pledged his allegiance to ISIS before the attack and he has made numerous statements on social media of his attachment to terror groups. The similarity of the horrific attack in a Paris nightclub and this attack are uncanny. ISIS has already gone on record as instructing its members to commit acts of terror against the West during Ramadan, the Muslim holy celebration.

Party Politics

Both the Democrats and the Republicans have made statements to the media which fall in line with Party doctrine. President Obama called the shooting, "an act of terror and an act of hate," and ordered flags flown at half staff to honor the victims. Bernie Sanders, who is no longer in the race for the Democratic nomination, first reaction was anti-gun; making it known that he is against assault-type weaponry being available to the general public. Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump expressed sympathies for the victims and many other Party leaders followed suit. Mr. Trump did pose the question of when America is going to get tough on extremist violence.

Gun Control

Many media outlets and anti-gun politicians have already printed stories, given quotes, engaged voters, and brought in mountains of what they deem evidence in response to the story. The weapon used by this shooter is considered the "go to" semi-automatic weapon for mass shootings but is also legally owned by nearly 4 million law abiding Americans. Stories counter to these are focused on the individual who did the killing, not the weapon he used. This arguement has gone on for a long time and will certainly continue.

I resisted writing my own version of the details since they are still emerging. My point has been made. There are dead Americans in Orlando, their executioner a man with connections to Middle Eastern terrorism, and some people still are blaming guns instead of the killer and his motivations; in this case it once again appears to lead back to Islam.

As a sidebar, ISIS has claimed responsibility for this attack. An ISIS organization, three days ago, said they were going to hit Florida.

Watching the Brexit stories on the news and hearing about how the globalists are so scared the last few decades of work are about to crumble is useful in understanding how Obama thinks - he is pushing us toward a world society and he hates the fact that we have it better than the world

I have said for years , because of some of Obama's decisions , that he isn't Americanized enough to be our president ! I have recently realized that I was right all along , And here's the thing , I am very tolerant of all ideologies , of all reasonable opinions , although grossly outnumbered these days ! I wish that the"vast silent majority "of Americans would come out of the closet and wake up !

Ralph Schwartz (author) from Idaho Falls, Idaho on June 13, 2016:

Leading a nation requires "bigger picture thinking" which Obama does possess, however he's controlled by ideology instead of common sense and American principles. The last few years combined with the primary season has really brought to light just how polarized many people are and how they will put Party before Nation.

Mr. Obama demonstrates time and time again that his relationship to the Muslim world runs much deeper than he keeps claiming. The attempts to continually downplay the obvious are being seen by the American people and Donald Trump is going to insure that message reverberates throughout the primary season. Hillary Clinton is at a crossroads and she doesn't even realize it yet - she has to either separate herself significantly from Obama (and then risk him allowing the e-mail attack dogs to destroy her) or face months of Trump hammering her about her lack or ability or lack of will to defend America.

This president should be far, far more focused on terrorism than he is , instead he's given in to an extended use and support of divisiveness in promoting all his policies , I wonder why he doesn't use THAT in fighting terrorism . I have watched closely how he reacts to all events , I am amazed at how quickly he called out the terrorism of this event and I cannot help but wonder why now ? Is it because of terror against the LGBT world , and of course he jumped immediately to the gun debate issue . I believe his leadership skills are pretty poor !

Ralph Schwartz (author) from Idaho Falls, Idaho on June 12, 2016:

And yet, the bulk of the Liberal Media will gloss over everyone except the gun part. No matter that ISIS has claimed this guy was an Islamist fighter - no one in the Democratic Party can say 'Islamic terrorist'

Another senseless mass murder. I was watching the news as it was still happening and the perp was exchanging gunfire with police. My heart goes out to the families of victims once again.

Old Poolman on June 12, 2016:

I know that but I threw it in as a possible motive for this senseless murder of so many people.

Ralph Schwartz (author) from Idaho Falls, Idaho on June 12, 2016:

I didn't even say anything about the sexual persuasion of the victims - it's secondary to them being Americans. Muslims are killing Americans....period.

Old Poolman on June 12, 2016:

Ralph - This is another sign of the times to come. This situation will only get worse as time goes by.

Of course there are those who blame it all on the gun with no mention of the evil person who was using the gun. For you anti-gunners out there keep in mind that a bomb would have caused even more carnage and then you might consider blaming the person who set off the bomb.

It is a known fact that many members of the Islam religion hate homosexuals and often kill them by throwing them off a roof or beating them to death. I find that very strange in the religion of supposed "Peace" and "Love" don't you?

But with that said we still don't know the motivation behind this senseless killing spree. We don't know if it was a hatred of homosexuals that set him off or just his love of ISIS and Islam.

This murderer was born in America and was a citizen of this country. Yet we are still inviting thousands more who follow the same religious teachings to relocate into this country.

Perhaps it is time to close the gate until we can better control those who are coming into our country.

I really fear the slaughter of human beings has just begun and we will be seeing more things like this on the news in the near future.

Al Wordlaw from Chicago on June 12, 2016:

Yes RJ, I woke up to the same sad thing since early this a.m. You wrote the story very well. Too bad people don't fist fight anymore to resolve their anger. We must continue to pray for America and the world although, the Bible said there'd be wars and days like this.
