Stop This Insanity Called Freedom

The word freedom has different interpretations to each of us. Americans cling to their Freedom of Speech clause in the U.S. Constitution as a God given right, as if they can just say whatever they want. Maybe. But the Covid-19 virus and the variant, Delta, is acerbating the whole "freedom" issue through politics between the conservative and liberals.

With the Delta variant surging across the Globe and America, where it accounts or 43% of surging new cases in Florida, Texas, and Missouri, and many more are needlessly dying because they are the unvaccinated. Is there still a "freedom of choice"?

The government, those elected to represent us, are as divided as anyone regarding whether a person continues to have a right, a freedom, to vaccinate or not. The irony about this nonsense is that NONE of this happens when it comes to getting your child vaccinated as all school districts require for small pox, measles, and other diseases. Parents willingly abide by the requirements because if they do not, they cannot attend public schools, in most cases. So, why is getting vaccinated for the Delta variant of Covid-19 any different?

The states where the Delta surges are mostly those Republican states (although not all) where their governments have promoted the "freedom of choice" issue purely because of partisan politics. But, the hypocrisy is that most Republican members of Congress and Senate have been fully vaccinated as was former president Trump and his family, yet, the insanity of choice is something they continue to push just because Joe Biden wants everyone to be vaccinated to stop the Covid surges.

All medical experts agree that most of the surges and deaths occurring now are among the unvaccinated, with only a very few number of others getting the virus while fully vaccinated (these people only have minor problems).

There are public health issues that require more draconian methods to control a health danger. In 2020, with Covid surging all over the world, even the USA adopted those methods that did impinge on one's personal freedoms for the greater good of the population. Decades ago, the same was said of small pox, measles until a vaccine arrived to wipe it out. Then, the government made it mandatory to get these vaccinations and they have become a standard for school age kids.

Now, there is a new variant running amok through those refusing to become vaccinated for stupid reasons and fears fed by false information of those promoting the "freedom of choice" issue. Other countries are facing similar resistance to getting vaccinated with protests etc.

People seem to forget or choose to ignore the fact that government can force non-compliers to comply through simply requiring a child to become vaccinated before going to public school, or requiring proof of being fully vaccinated for Covid when entering public places etc. In effect, the Covid virus has forced governments to become more authoritarian to prevent the virus from spreading in their country.

Those who continue to refuse the vaccines will find themselves not only at risk, but more isolated and unable to many activities they formerly could. Get vaccinated because it is for the greater good for general population and yourself.

Well, like many of his kind, he will be blamed for much of the surge now in Florida due to his policies and attitudes about it. We shall see how it all evolves.

Sharlee on July 27, 2021:

I did a bit of looking around in regards to Desantis's attitude on the vaccine. It appears he is truly supporting the vaccine, and putting out statements to support the vaccine. This could be a walk back on his part, I searched statements from the last few days. However, it looks like he is pro-vaccine at this point.

Mike Russo from Placentia California on July 27, 2021:

What I'm going to say next is very cynical. Those that refuse to get vaccinated and die from the virus are reducing the size of their gene pool. It is natures way of survival of the fittest. It may be the only way we can stop the virus from replicating. If those that refuse to get the shots and see others dying around them will come to their senses and get the shots. Fear can be a great motivator.

In Florida, where the rates are doubling weekly, the Governor still refuses to acknowledge the benefits of vaccines in and still claims it is freedom of choice and the government should stay out of it.

Sharlee on July 26, 2021:

What makes me very sad is that there are nations that would love to have the amounts of vaccine we have and are throwing out. It would seem we as a people here in America have lost the ability to use common sense.

So many just do not realize this is an unprecedented situation, and it seems many just can't comprehend the seriousness of this virus. One problem is our media offering conflicting messages.

CHRIS57 from Northern Germany on July 26, 2021:

Eventually the fear of facing infection and severe consequences gets larger than any fear of getting a shot.

Then we may see a change, but then it is too late. Not necessarily for those vaccinated, but for those acting too late for political reasons. Such a sad story.

You said it well, this is a TEAM effort. Glad to see even the far right Fox people are suggesting in getting vaccinated instead of tossing out more fear about it. Personal freedoms only go so far depending on the circumstances.

Sharlee on July 26, 2021:

We have always had a certain number of people that won't take vaccines, for one reason or another. However, this virus is a crisis, and I feel more informed about what will result if people don't step up and get vaccinated. We will have this virus drag on for many years, it could mutate over and over, and actually become more of a killer. I had hoped our Government would mandate the vaccine to enter businesses and to fly. We that were responsible should not have to be exposed to those that are not vaccinated. It has come time to either step up or step aside. Let's face it no one wanted to take a new vaccine, but most realized that we need to stop a virus that kills and could get far worse. The Government is thinking of a mask mandate --- that punishes us that did the right thing, and ultimately won't rid us of COVID, mask will only keep it around for many years.

Ara Vahanian from LOS ANGELES on July 25, 2021:

What some of these people don't realize is that freedom has its limits in this country. Those that refuse to get vaccinated, are they willing to risk getting very sick and possibly dying? Do they just seem to not care about increasing their chances to continue living? It baffles me why this whole vaccination issue has become politicized.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on July 25, 2021:

As more and more unvaccinated people continue to get sick and die from Covid, perhaps more of them will awaken to the idea that the vaccine is readily available and can stop this virus from continuing to produce deadly variants. At least, that is the case in our country. We have plenty of vaccines available.

If not for themselves, I wish that they would think of others! Some children who cannot yet get the vaccine need protection! Governments and businesses may have to mandate the vaccine for work and public gatherings. It is too bad it has come to this.
