Starting With A False Premise

I sometimes interrupt people when they start explaining something. I know that it is not nice to interrupt others. That is seen as being rude but for me the issue arises when someone begins a train of thought with a false premise. I cannot let anyone continue to explain something, if their premise is wrong.

If someone begins to explain to me something about planet Earth and begins by saying: "So, with a flat Earth ...". Sigh ... I cannot in my right-mind allow the person to continue because the beginning of their thought is wrong: Earth is not flat and if we continue on that path, we will continue to mislead ourselves. Now, I know this is an extreme example but the "flat Earth" community is doing quite well so, not to say that this outrageous claim does not have its followers.

The lucky part is that the "flat Earthers" do not have much impact on our daily lives so, for the most part we can ignore them and all is fine but there are other groups of people who have a false impression about reality and they do affect us, greatly I might add. We should not ignore such people because they will not only mislead themselves but they will mislead others as well.

So, when we hear claims about the United States being a Christian nation let's look into this claim:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" — First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

In "Lee v. Weisman, 505 U.S. 577 (1992).", Justice John Paul Stevens said that:

"When the underlying principle has been examined in the crucible of litigation, the Court has unambiguously concluded that the individual freedom of conscience protected by the First Amendment embraces the right to select any religious faith or none at all."

Thus, we see the claim of the United States being a Christian nation as being false and no matter how many people believe otherwise, it does not make America a "Christian Nation". It never was a Christian Nation and those who wish to preserve the Republic have to ensure that the United States does not give-in to the false narrative presented by some who do not know their own history.

"Wealth trickles-down" some say. Yes, "Trickle-down economics" as it is called: another misguiding idea. As if money was rain-water and it just keeps flowing freely from one bank account into another. Haha!! It would be comical if it was not so serious.

This claim that we should let rich people become even richer because from the riches they make, money will "trickle-down" to the poor, is down-right detrimental. Jeff Bezos is on-track to become the first trillionaire in the world, while his company Amazon has paid no federal taxes in the last three years (since 2017). So, we see money doesn't just trickle down. Trump allegedly paid seven hundred and fifty dollars in federal taxes in 2017. This, when he claims he has many billions of dollars. How is money trickling down? More like it's trickling up.

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) put-out an article on October 7th, 2020 with the title: "Billionaires see fortunes rise by 27% during the pandemic". So, as the common men and women are struggling to not end-up on the street, as lines at food-banks are getting longer, billionaires are fattening their pockets. What do we do? Do we stand idle? The wealthy are not paying their fare share in our societies. This is clear and I would say that we have to change that, for the well-being of everyone.

A third false claim to look into is that left-wing activists are violent and dangerous. We nowadays hear much about ANTIFA. At least on this I can speak from personal knowledge as I have been an activist attending protests for just over two decades, from Canada to the United States. I have inhaled enough tear gas and seen enough cars burning to be able to have a good idea of what is going on.

Protests attract a wide variety of people. I have been to protests where some people are talking about anti-war initiatives, some are protesting for animal rights, some are protesting environmental issues, some are protesting for better work conditions, etc. On and on it goes: protests are never a monolith. People show-up with many different grievances.

Within protests we often have the likes of ANTIFA and/or Black Bloc who show-up as well. They have their own intentions. They come out and are ready for action. They may burn cars, break windows, beat a cop, or two if possible ... yes, they do often use violence. I have seen it with my own eyes but do they define the protest movement on the left? Of course not. At a protest of a few thousand people, the Black Bloc will show-up with maybe fifty people at most (if lucky). They are simply a small group of people using the mass of protesters to hide among because there are so few of them indeed.

We cannot give-in to false narratives. We cannot ignore them and we cannot make excuses for them. We have to draw them out like poison. They are twisting our world in ways which are dangerous for our well-being. It really is time to stand-up for truth, decency, honesty and continue to fight for our values. What is our intent? Where are we going as humans? What is our path ahead? These are our choices.

All the best to everyone!

That too, Mr. Obrian: I would like to keep my sanity. We cannot have at the same time a "flat Earth" and a "round Earth". Not in any sane sense anyway.

Thank You for the comment. Cheers!

Good article. Sometimes we must set boundries so we do not drive ourselves crazy with all the false narratives.

Thank You very much the visit and for leaving a comment, Mr. O'Brian. I know it's getting difficult with the comments on Hub-pages lately.

All the very best!

Good article. Couldn't agree more.

"We need to look at individuals. It's the same train of thought I use regarding making a change in this world." - Very good advice, Mr. Bill.

I'm certainly trying but the tribal divisions I am seeing around I think will continue. The false narratives have been around for a long time and people simply believe in "alternative facts". It's a thing now. One that cannot continue unchallenged, in my opinion.

Thank You very much for the visit and comment. All the very best!

I have been singing this tune now for quite a few years now. People toss labels like Liberal or Right-wing like they are confetti, and they use them as though they are all-encompassing, which they are not. And to do so only increases the distrust and misunderstanding amongst us all.

We need to look at individuals. It's the same train of thought I use regarding making a change in this world. I am much more capable of making a difference within my community, one person at a time, rather than trying to affect some national movement.

I am me and you and you, and it's a full-time job just trying to be understood on any given day.

Sigh! I'm going to have a cup of tea and settle down.

Pax vobiscum, my friend!

Haha!! You certainly are quick on the guns Mr. Diogenes. Thank You for that - I just posted the piece and was actually still editing some punctuation issues. I have to post a piece to be able to do a last edit.

You know, I am a tad concerned about the "reset" You speak of. It definitely is a possibility for the future. We are playing God without much awareness of future consequences.

Evolution is not waiting for anything, like You well said. We either adapt, or we join the dinosaurs, as a small blip in Earth's history.

All the very best to You! Thanks again. : )

Diogenes on November 12, 2020:

Hi Mr Happy: I thoroughly enjoyed the article. The planet will have a rest soon when it only has ants (or their ilk) to contend with. Mankind's treatment of each other and their world can't last much longer. Evolution is not waiting for divine intervention as we can see.

Bless you for trying My Happy!!!
