Socialism: A Philosophy of Failure, the Creed of Ignorance, the Gospel of Envy

Ignore the in-my-face obvious issues and lend all of my attention to unwarranted, groundless non-issues? Not happening!

Many people have very strong opinions when it comes to Socialism.

Some are convinced that they are all in and all for socialism. They're one hundred percent behind the self avowed, communist embracing, Bernie Sanders types, no matter what!

Others are not convinced that they are all in, but they have been convinced that they should hate Donald Trump types and so, they toy with the idea of socialism.

Many are where they are on most all things; in the neutral zone, disengaged, no opinion one way or the other, don't care, don’t want to be bothered.

Others, adamantly oppose it, this includes me.

Three very famous and very successful individuals who had very strong opinions when it came to socialism, were definitely in the "adamantly opposed" category.

It is these three individuals that I will be focusing on:

Winston Churchill

Margaret Thatcher

Ronald Reagan

Winston Churchill

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." - Winston Churchill

While I could never presume to know or get into the mind of Winston Churchill, let's break this down:

A Philosophy of Failure

Philosophy: Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline. The investigation of causes and laws underlying reality. Inquiry into the nature of things based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods.

Failure: The condition or fact of not achieving the desired end or ends. The condition or fact of being insufficient or lacking; a falling short.

In other words; Socialism sets us up to fail.

The Creed of Ignorance

Scroll to Continue

Creed: Any statement or system of belief, principles or opinions

Ignorance: Lack of knowledge

Socialism counts on our ignorance in the failure set up.

Gospel of Envy

Gospel: A teaching or doctrine of a religious teacher, accepted as unquestionably true

Envy: A feeling of discontent and resentment over other's possessions, with a strong desire to have them for oneself. A possession of another that is strongly desired.

We are reduced to coveting what we can never have.

Inherent Virtue

Inherent: intrinsic, remain fixed

Virtue: The quality of moral excellence, righteousness and responsibility; goodness

The only good thing about Socialism is that it's consistent.

Equal Sharing of Misery

Sharing: equal portions

Misery: Prolonged or extreme suffering

We can count on there to be an equal sharing of disappointment, discontentment and dissatisfaction, with our lot in life!

Margaret Thatcher - The Iron Lady She was the 1st woman to serve as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and served from 1979-1990. She was also the leader of the Conservative Party from 1975-1990

Margaret Thatcher

"The problem with socialism is that eventually, you run out of other people's money." - Margaret Thatcher

Rather than dissect this, let's look at this another way, (outside of monetary terms) let's go with an analogy.

The 'go-to' analogy:

Whether it be a fellow church member, the neighborhood volunteer, the classroom Mom/Dad, a family member; you know them, that person that can never say “No".

Everyone depends on this person to take on the responsibility, to carry the load. Oftentimes, the go-to will wear it as a badge of honor; they crave the pats on the back, they crave the praise, but eventually, the weight becomes too heavy, even for them and over time, they burn out.

Many of these eager beavers become resentful, feel used and may even have a falling out; leaving the church, the club, the association, the classroom, family events....etc., leaving all who depend on them in a lurch! In a pinch, in a pickle, between a rock and a hard place... depends on where you hail from.

There's no one waiting in the wings, because all assumed the "go-to" person would always be there to...go to!

Eventually, in all all catches up and it all comes crashing down.

The 1%, 2%, 3% of the wealthiest, forced to sustain an entire Nation can and some may even be eager to do so, for a while, taking great pride in carrying the entire load, but eventually they'll collapse under the pressure; mentally, physically and most definitely monetarily!

The free ride will be over and what happens then?

The idea/concept of America came to be so that each of us would have ample and equal, opportunity.

Each of us carries within, an innate understanding that we were not designed to be carried for life!

(Mama bird is going to hang around the nest for only so long and then it's up to baby bird, to learn to find food or become the food)

In this Country, we all begin with massive opportunities and yes, some definitely do have an easier access to the many paths, but they do not own those paths!

Those paths belong to all of us and that is what makes and keeps America so sought after!

When you choose socialism you are choosing to give up on so many things:

  • ample opportunities
  • multiple paths (electing to stay on one dead-end road)
  • self-sufficiency
  • independence
  • individuality
  • participation
  • endless options
  • a voice (*just think about the families of Charlie Gard and Alfie Evans) *More on these little boys to follow.

If this Nation ever chooses Socialism, we will be choosing to give up on our Constitutional Republic, that which has been fought over, that which many have died for, designed with We the People, at heart and in mind... nearly 250 years ago!

Ronald Reagan - The 40th President of the United States of America, a Conservative, he served (2) terms between 1981 and 1989. Prior to serving as President, he served as the Governor of California (2) terms from 1967 to 1975.

Ronald Reagan

”Socialism only works in two places; Heaven where they don’t need it and hell where they already have it.” - Ronald Wilson Reagan

Last but not least, our All-American.

Surely, this quote doesn't need to be broken down into an analogy or dissected.

Reagan also said, “One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine. It’s very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project. Most people are a little reluctant to oppose anything that suggests medical care for people who possibly can’t afford it.”

Oh, we know so well - the Democrats, under the direction of Barack Obama and under the cover of night; with cloak and dagger tactics and maneuvers, went there!

You were so right Mr. President, they played the guilt card, they tugged at our heart strings and they tried to sell an old, tired, bad, losing idea as new and exciting; the latest and the greatest.

Guess we’ll always be stuck with some form of it; such as the failed Social Security system.

If our Government has given it a name, we'll always be stuck with it or with some form of it, it seems.

Earlier, I mentioned Charlie Gard and Alfie Evans; both lived and died in England, both had health issues, along with Parents that loved them and wanted to do all they could possibly do for them, but their Parents held no power and had no control. They were very limited in what they could do for their young sons.

”The Producers“, the UK, held all of the power and ultimately, they had the final say, in whether these boys would receive additional care. They had all control over decisions about second opinions, cutting edge medicine, traveling abroad, whatever it took, not the Parents!

Here at home, look at the plight of our many brave warriors, we hear their stories all the time. They depend on this Country, which they've served or are serving, to be there for them when they have medical needs (not when it is convenient for the Government, but when it is convenient for them, our Military!)

They should never face long wait times to get an appointment and then wait a long period of time, again, to actually see a Doctor.

When they do and if that is happening, they must have the freedom, the have access to the care required.

If that care can be achieved much quicker, in the private sector, then so be it!

The Trump Administration worked to change things in Washington D.C.

He ran on that and no doubt about it, he worked toward that.

But, what a task!

Our Government, over time, has taken on more than it was ever designed to take on!

As a result of the Government gorging on everything in sight, it has become bloated and is not nearly as healthy as it should be.

The Government is unable to give 100% to our Military, because it is not lean and mean!

The Government is overextended!

Just imagine this on a much larger scale....on the National level!

Perish the thought!

No thanks, we do not want growth in Government, we want it to shrink, we want it to be lean and mean, as it was designed to be.
Leaving, we the people, with more opportunity to be equally successful, not equally suffering!
No to socialism!

So true Tim, well said, “people need opportunities to try to succeed, they also need opportunities to fail.”

It starts with our children, they don’t all need a trophy!

When they race, sometimes they win and sometimes they lose and they need to understand that. There will always be another opportunity for them to do better, to improve on their last performance. This prepares them for adulthood, right? Not complicated.

Yes immigrants get a lot of breaks in America, but if you and your wife have a dream, go for it, just don’t expect to get rich

Tim Truzy from U.S.A. on May 19, 2018:

Excellent, socialism has failed in a big way (The Russian Communist bloc; the Chinese trying capitalism). Indeed, people need opportunities to try to succeed. they also need opportunities to fail.

The trouble comes when no wealth is redistributed; then, we get revolutions (Bosheviks, Mao, American robber barons of the early 20th-century; Fidel Castro.) History is clear what happens when you force them to eat cake that isn't there. (French Revolution.)

In any case, I completely agree with you. Capitalism is the economic system that has succeeded. Therefore, chances to be capitalists should be given to all of us.

Here's a true story. In L.A., they took a gang from the streets who were active in distributing drugs. These guys were taught to run a business in the area, selling sauces, producing goods, and told whether it succeeds or fails was their responsibility. That business still flourishes. I'll never forget what one young man said. He said I didn't want to sell drugs, I wanted to run a store like I saw my granddad do.

One thing I read which surprised me, Abwilliams. Many immigrants who start businesses are not required to pay taxes for a given number of years. That's not the case with Americans who start their own enterprises. My wife and I looked at the corporate taxes and incorporation fees for creating our own business, and we decided to hold back. What the !chicken sandwich! is that?

Socialism sucks and capitalism whips butt.

Great article.

Always thought provoking and well written,

Brotherly love,

Thank you Paula -

Not planning to stop writing.

I was at a cookout last night and politics and all that jazz came up in conversation (duh!)

A person asked, how do we know what to believe these days, what's real and what's fake and who do we believe?

I answered very similarly to you. We use our brains, our internal calculators, our common sense, it really isn't complicated that the li......'some people' ;) are desperate to continue to confuse, corrupt, convince new generations.

It works!

The person that asked this silly question is at least my age and she's confused.

Suzie from Carson City on May 19, 2018:

Angie. You always share an interesting read. This one is especially spot-on. No sense ever beating around the bush. When it comes to this particular issue, the only equipment needed is a good brain, common sense and a basic knowledge of old-fashioned elementary arithmetic.

Funny thing, even this simple, libs (Oops, sorry) "some people," can't seem to GET IT!

I apologize, at one time, in my pathetic confusion, I wore the Independent label. (I like to be fair & balanced ?) But, you see, in this past year or so, I've been forced to accept the hard core facts of reality about...shhhh, one specific group. You know, the bunch of irrational, self-serving, corrupt, morons. Don't make me name them!!

The weirdest part to this is it has been THEM who have guided me to see the light.....the light, that is, which for every one of them, has burned out completely. Poor blind idiots.

Mr. Friedman is brilliant....a rare and shining genius. I have heard him speak numerous times. His forte is wiping the floor with Li.....Oops, Socialists. When he spells it out so clearly and irrefutably, it is literally impossible to see it any other way.. That is of course, unless you're a brainless, morally bankrupt, illiterate, Li.........yikes! There I go again. I almost said it. It's much more convincing when "they" just continue to prove who and what they are, all by themselves.....don't you think? Works for me.......Keep writing, Angie!

Found it.

I've watched them all and still marvel at how he explains things. There was, is, no one on the left who could debate him and win.

A B Williams (author) from Central Florida, USA on May 18, 2018:

Pop, my kids used to get so mad at me, because I'd not just say you can't always get what you want, I'd sing it....Rolling Stones style!

But, they could work and save their money and then buy what they wanted (of course they always got what they needed)

They are now hard-working adults and they never have their hands out.

It is so funny now to see my adult children, shaking their heads about the younger generations.

Tsad, I am very familiar with Friedman. There was a clip circulating a while back of him on with Phil Donahue and he seemed to get through to Donahue (at least for that moment in time)

The Logician from then to now on on May 18, 2018:

Milton Friedman, the Nobel-winning monetarist economist who was an intellectual architect of the free-market policies of Republican US presidents, and an adviser to Margaret Thatcher when she was Prime Minister said it best. Spending a day listening to all the video clips of him on YouTube is more educational on this topic (which is not understood by most who can't tell you what the definition of socialism actually is) than almost anything you can spend a day doing.

breakfastpop on May 18, 2018:

Socialism works until you run out of other people's money. That is the crux of the matter. Sadly, Bernie lovers can't wait to use up other people's money. Having their hands out is just about all the work they are interested in.
