The election

The presidential campaign is in full swing and on third November the election to select the next man to sit in the White House will be held. After the election, there is a period of almost 3 months before the new incumbent takes charge and during those three months the loser who maybe the president will be like a lame-duck wondering at his fate and luck. I think this is a serious lacuna in the election process and the founding fathers should have ensured that once an election takes place within a maximum of 10 to 12 days the new man whoever he's should take office.

I watched the two debates between the two contenders Joe Biden and Donald Trump and somehow it didn't fire like the earlier debates. In the last debate Biden, the challenger mentioned discriminations and the word Muslims. I wonder what he meant. Did he want unbridled immigration from the Muslim lands to America? I am sure he must be aware that even after so many decades in France which has the largest minority population, the believers of this faith have not integrated with the values of the French Republic.

Again there was most bashing on the colour issue and the race issue. Sometimes I wonder that even after 250 years of the creation of the American state it is a travesty that the colour of the skin of a guy is an issue in the election. Mainly because the prejudice against the black skin has not gone and earlier also I had written that to my mind this is not going to end. There are hundreds and thousands of white skin people who profess that they do not believe in a color bar but I know of one person who was talking this language but when his daughter married an African- Muslim he just lost his shirt. He could not countenance a son-in-law who could be a black and a Muslim.

Coming to both the contenders I do not think they have any plan whatsoever, except to get elected by hook or crook and creating an aura which in any case they are not going to follow. Another four years of Trump or Biden is not going to solve this problem which has continued for the last 250 years. Why? because the will of the American people to do away with color cannot go away. I have given an example above but I hope it's taken in the proper spirit.

Racial Divide, Anarchy

President Putin in a recent statement has said that America is no longer the power it was and as per him the two bigger powers with leverage are China and Germany. One may or may not agree with Putin but the fact is if America finds itself in a predicament where there is widespread rioting in all important cities on the issue of race and color and this is something that is eating into the vitals of the American state. I just cannot imagine how a white cop can put his knee on the neck of a colored and strangulate him to death without any compunction. This is something that has affected the American psyche there are thousands of Americans writing on posts and many a page also, who will say this is not the face of America.

I have been a well-wisher of the American state and sincerely hope that they are right but every nation or society has to have a correction and the Americans never had one. A similar problem though in a different dimension is in India where the government has perpetuated the caste system by enshrining it in the Constitution and this evil of almost 4000 years has been allowed to grow. India has replaced meritocracy with casteist selections. Just for the record out of the last 850 senior appointments for the Indian administrative service, only 306 were on merit and the rest based on caste. I have no hesitation in saying that such a society is doomed.

I will say the same thing about the Americans. I have not been able to understand how America could not solve the current problem in 250 years. The first women’s march in pittsburgh, shortly after Trump’s inauguration, was deeply divided over the involvement of women of color, culminating in a separate march and a black organizer asking whether the official march was a “whites-only feminist event”.

Many prominent American athletes of color converted to Islam like Cassius Clay who became Muhammad Ali and there are many more. I think people must ask a question as to why this is happening. I have not forgotten the incident at Fort Hood where a Colonel professing to be a Muslim shot 20 fellow soldiers for nothing.

Last word

What I have written is just of the cuff and these are random thoughts which I noted down while I was having my peg of Macallan. I have also been reading how the American- African slaves being transported to the new world, not only America but other places were collected in the slave castles, and given sermons by the Christian priests who were obviously all-white about the glory of Jesus Christ and these men were going to their death. America has to exorcise this ghost and the problem is it's not happening because just to win the election Donald Trump has given a twist in favor of the whites.

Millions do not agree with him but we must remember that Adolf Hitler came to power on a minority vote because the majority kept silent thinking that it will be a passing phase. The majority in America has kept silent for too long almost 250 years but I am not certain if the majority of the whites are ready to share the space with the blacks. I don't wish to enumerate any facts and figures which are with me and have been given to me by my secretary, of the lopsided figures of those imprisoned in jail and also how a particular race being involved more in the act of rape. America became a world power just over a hundred years back and unipolar power only for the last three decades. it will have to do much better to last for another hundred years.

Thank you Flourish for your comment and I hope your dreams of the election come true.

FlourishAnyway from USA on October 27, 2020:

I’ve already voted and I trust the American people to right the wrong that was committed when Trump was elected into office, winning the electoral college but losing the popular vote. We need to make this a landslide then follow through with BLM and women’s issues.

MG Singh emge (author) from Singapore on October 27, 2020:

Denise, I could sense the pain in your comment and how much you love your country. This is the saving grace for America and I hope more people like you can introspect.

Denise McGill from Fresno CA on October 26, 2020:

I wish I could argue with you but many of us Americans are also wondering if this society can continue if the divide between the people continues. In the 60s and 70s we young people thought we had come a long way toward uniting the people finally but all we did was to drive the prejudice underground and now it has risen again. It seems like now that I'm in my late 60s all the work done back then was for nothing. You are right. We cannot last this way. And to be honest, those professing to be Christians are not following Christ. Christ would not have put up with this kind of prejudice and division. The part that hurts the worst is the people who say they believe in one thing and who don't live like it or act like it. They give us all a very bad name. It is good for us to read what other lands and cultures are truly thinking about us and what is happening in this country. Thanks for writing your thoughts. By the way, I have already voted by mail and many that I know have as well. You are right that we should be changing the Constitution about when the president takes office. 200 years ago it took a while to count the votes one by one. Now that it is done much more quickly and electronically, the president should be able to take office sooner. Maybe soon we can have that changed.

Blessings,

Denise

om, you have written a lot of things which I wanted to add in my article but that would have made it too lengthy. There is no doubt there is a big class divide in India based on caste which carries on even when people convert to another religion. Another factor is skin color where in India the lighter skin is preferred to the darker skin, no wonder that in Tamil Nadu more fair and lovely is sold than Coca-Cola. The fair-skinned Arabs have always treated the blacks as slaves and the first seeds of slavery were sown by the Arabs. America is riven by color and I do not think it is going to go away. Thank you for commenting.

Sp Greaney, Nice of you to have commented we will have to wait just about another two weeks and we will know who is the next man to sit in the White House.

MG Singh emge (author) from Singapore on October 24, 2020:

Leslie, thank you for your comments and opinion which I appreciate a lot.

MG Singh emge (author) from Singapore on October 24, 2020:

Bill, thank you for your comment. I am glad you have agreed that racism is not something that can we wished away. It is something that is continuing for the last 2000 years in some form or the other all over the world and one has to accept the fact that it may decrease here and there but it will never go away. The problem is racism leads to inequality in the economic sphere and also in civil rights. One can try and rectify this aspect but that the day will never come when the world will be one human race. It's never going to happen. America has a responsibility to lead the world but the press continues to sensationalise whatever is happening and that is not good.

Sp Greaney from Ireland on October 24, 2020:

I think outsiders see the difficulties that the American people face and we do wonder will everyone come out for this election.

They electorate have two choices. One leader has shown how badly he is at leading a nation and the other will have a lot of work ahead of him to prove he can turn things around.

Leslie McCowen from Cape Cod, USA on October 24, 2020:

I think we’ll do better, even if the electoral college wins over the majority again.

The problem will be the courts, whom McConnell has stacked in favor of corporate transnationalism.

Workers, women, gays, immigrants will lose out.

We’ll have to fight those fights all over again.

Unless Biden wins, then we have a gvt that is more like USA.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on October 24, 2020:

I always enjoy hearing from those who were not born here. I think, at times, it is much easier to "see America" for what it truly is if you are looking at it from afar.

Racism is not going to leave our shores. That is my belief. It may stay quiet for a time, hidden in the shadows, but it always surfaces. There are many who disagree with me, those optimists who believe we have gotten better as a country, but don't count me among them.
