Pornhub claims they offer steamy content to help people get through the COVID shutdown and in April 2020 began offering free monthly service that normally costs $9.99 a month.

“With nearly one billion people in lockdown across the world because of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s important that we lend a hand and provide them with an enjoyable way to pass the time,” said Pornhub Vice President Corey Price.

In fact, in stark contrast to their day to day shady porn activities, the site donated tens of thousands of masks in the United States and Europe while they also touted their support of organizations fighting racial inequality.

In a nutshell, Pornhub has been trying to promote themselves as a wholesome website to increase their already 3.5 billion users a month. To put things into perspective, that is more than Netflix and Amazon combined.

According to Pornhub’s "Insights-Year in Review," during 2019, more and more people began using the site as a social media platform, sending over 70 million messages to other users and leaving over 11.5 million comments on videos.

The site rakes in money from nearly 3 billion ad impressions a day, ranking as the 10th most visited website in the world, with most users in the United States.

Similar to the YouTube platform, top searches on Pornhub are for amateur videos. The site attributes to the significant number of searches to the “amateur models” that have joined the site, but happy and wholesome the site is not. The site is polluted with rape videos and women being asphyxiated, child rapes, revenge porn, spycam videos—anything you can think of.

Of the 2,911,502 videos on the site, a search for the word “teens” leads to more than 150,000 videos.

Pornhub does not require identification to sign up for an account.

Pornhub does not require identification to sign up for an account.

The site has easy access and doesn’t check identification or require adult consent, meaning a child of any age can sign up with an email and password and view porn.

To become “verified “ on the site and upload porn videos, one must simply provide a picture of yourself holding a piece of white paper with your Pornhub username written on it.

That means anyone can upload a pornographic video into various categories such as teen, gangbang, bondage, rough-sex, amateurs, cosplay, and dozens of more categories.

Of the millions of new videos posted on their site each year, most probably do involve consenting adults, but many videos depict non-consensual violence and child abuse—leaving "real life" victims in its wake.

Missing teen

In 2018, a 15-year-old girl in Florida slipped out of her house one night and vanished for nearly a year until her mother found almost 60 pornographic videos of her daughter posted on Pornhub, Periscope, Modelhub, Snapchat, and other websites.

Christopher Johnson, 30, was arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious acts on a child younger than 16.

In the videos, the girl was with a bald man who the police recognized as someone the girl was seen with inside a convenience store. The store surveillance video showed the girl trying to cover her face so the clerk would not see her, but the clerk recognized her and called the police. The store surveillance video also showed the girl and the man getting into a Dodge Challenger with another man and driving away.

Detectives linked the car to 30-year-old Christopher Johnson and conducted surveillance at his apartment in Davie, Florida. On October 22, 2019, police arrested Johnson when he and the girl were getting into the Dodge Challenger.

According to the police report, the girl admitted to detectives that many of the porn videos were made inside Johnson’s apartment.

Johnson denied having sex with the minor, but the victim told police that she had been pregnant and Johnson had taken her to a clinic for an abortion, according to Detective Ganit's report. Police would later find papers from an abortion clinic in Johnson’s apartment corroborating the girl's statement.

In the videos, the teen “is either fully nude (or) topless in all videos and performs oral sex and sexual intercourse in at least two of the videos,” Ganit went on in the police report.

Johnson was charged with lewd and lascivious battery of a child younger than 16.

How many more?

During January 2020, nearly two dozen women won $12.7 million in a fraud lawsuit against the owners and operators of the San Diego based pornographic website, GirlsDoPorn.

Website owners Matthew Wolfe, 37, Michael Pratt, 36, and porn actor Ruben Garcia, 31, were sued by 22 women who claimed they were coerced into making sex films without knowing the images and video would be posted on the Internet, to include Pornhub.

The "Girls Do Porn" trial took four months. San Diego Superior court Judge Kevin Enright decided in favor of the 22 plaintiffs and against the 13 defendants.

A Warrior Fighting the Industry

Laila Mickelwait is the Director of Abolition for Exodus Cry, founder of the #Traffickinghub movement, and founder of New Reality International.

She took a massive undertaking beginning with an international effort to shut down Pornhub and hold its executives responsible for enabling, hosting, and profiting from videos of child rape, sex trafficking, and other forms of non-consensual content exploiting children and women.

“Pornhub tries to defend itself based upon its technology to remove trafficking and rape AFTER it is uploaded, viewed hundreds of thousands of times, downloaded, reproduced all over the net—and the tech doesn’t even work,” said Mickelwait.

In response, Mickelwait started the worldwide Traffickinghub petition to shut down Pornhub. Her effort has gained over 2 million signatures from 192 countries and over 300 organizations.

“What I hope is that this campaign, aimed at the largest website, will set a precedent and inspire important regulations to be enforced by all websites that upload and profit from hardcore pornographic material to require the verification of age and the consent of every person that is featured in the videos,” Mickelwait told DW.

MindGeek, the secretive owner of Pornhub, responded to Mickelwait's allegations, saying, “We find it irresponsible to spread false information that contains factually inaccurate statements, and we are disappointed that lies are being portrayed as fact, grossly misrepresenting MindGeek and it’s brands.”

Pornhub also commented on the allegations, emphasizing its “steadfast commitment to eradicating and fighting any and all illegal content on the internet, including non-consensual content and underage material. Any suggestion otherwise is categorically and factually inaccurate.”

As an American activist, for Mickelwait, it’s a little too late because this has been going on for years, and only now since it’s in the public spotlight is Pornhub stating they are doing everything within their power to fight sex trafficking. Her fight continues and she has vowed not to stop until Pornhub is held responsible for the damage it has already done and makes the appropriate changes to validate their currently empty statements. Until then, Pornhub poses a risk to children throughout the world.
