It’s Not Just Cuomo. Whitmer’s Now Under Attack, Too.

Gary has covered politics for more than half-a-century. Much of his career was in Michigan.

I was talking to a friend in Michigan the other day about New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo coming under attack for permitting COVID patients to be admitted to nursing homes. Critics say the policy led to the deaths of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of nursing home patients.

My friend asked me, “What about Gov. Whitmer?”

Admittedly with all the attention on Cuomo, I was unware then there was a similar policy in Michigan. But it’s inescapable now that Michigan’s Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer faces the prospect of facing criminal charges over that regulation.

Macomb County, which rests on Detroit’s northeast border, has a new prosecutor. Peter Lucido came in on a promise to clean up corruption in the county.

Republican Lucido replaces Eric Smith, who was charged in Macomb County court with 10 counts of public corruption. He resigned as a condition for taking a plea in a separate federal case.

Smith left the prosecutor’s office a mess. And everyone expected Lucido to come in after winning in November and clean things up on the county level. What they might not have expected that he’d turn his attention toward Lansing, the state capital. And Whitmer, the governor.

But that’s exactly what Lucido, who previously served in the state legislature, is doing today. In a legal shot across the bow, he is encouraging people whose relatives died in nursing homes in Macomb County to contact their local police departments and file wrongful death complaints against Whitmer.

Lucido doesn’t believe he can began such criminal charges on his own. What he needs are complaints from citizens that might give him license to launch an investigation and possibly file charges.

Whitmer says she followed CDC “best guidelines” on nursing homes. And made the testing of nursing home residents and staff a priority.

There’s a lot more national attention on Cuomo who is now also facing sexual harassment allegations than on Whitmer right now. But the parallels are obvious although no one has begun any criminal process against Cuomo.

There are some comparisons between Lucido and Cuomo worth noting, too. Because while in the Senate, Lucido also faced sexual harassment charges. After telling a woman reporter that she should stick around the Capitol because some high school boys there for a tour could “have a lot of fun” with her.

Lucido, who first criticized Whitmer for her nursing home policy while he was still in the state Senate, claims what he’s doing here is not political. That he’s simply trying to right a perceived wrong that he puts at the feet of the governor. But I’ve been in touch with some folks in Macomb County’s political and legal circles. And many of them think Lucido, who was just sworn into office in January, already has his eye on the governor’s seat.

Whitmer’s term ends in 2022.

Good article. I didn't know about Michigan. Cuomo is the hot ticket rightt now. Both Governors followed CDC guidelines so, what were they supposed to do other than what they did?

Did you hear the interview Trump did with Bernstein?

You live in Michigan. I’m Massachusetts, where our gvt had to borrow a plane from Robert Kraft to fly to China to get masks, because Trump stole ours!

Yet, red states gut all they needed and more.

Cuomo and Whitmer were following CDC guidelines.....but I notice you don’t mind DeSantis fudging numbers. You don’t mind Abbott dismissing the CDC, to open up and say no masks necessary.

And I do blame Trump. He hid the truth for his own benefit, and that of his biz friends.

He called Covid a Democrat hoax.

So, the only reason Cuomo and Whitmer are targets is because they are dems.

And THAT is despicable!

The facts are Yrrump quickly obtained vets, and he also provided this country with a vaccine. The states you mentioned had very good mitigation that their Governors ordered. Blaming Trump or a pandemic seems very unintelligent. Cuomo had a choice to send the elderly back into Nursing homes he did, he actually ordered it. That is just fact. So did Whitmer. It was wrong... We were above all told we were closing our country to protect the elderly. These two did just the opposite and then tried to hide it. Despicable human beings.

Leslie McCowen from Cape Cod, USA on March 09, 2021:

“As the pandemic swept through largely Democratic-voting states like New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey this spring, the early response from the Trump administration was defined by a catastrophic mix of ambivalence and incompetence. “Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment — try getting it yourselves,” President Trump said on a March 16 conference call with the nation’s governors, abdicating federal responsibility and sparking a bidding war among the states for limited hospital supplies. At least one auction was sent into further chaos when the federal government outbid states on the contracts.

But the Trump administration’s disregard for the massive loss of life was not equal: According to a Washington Post report from March 28, hard-hit, Democratic-leaning states like Massachusetts received only 17 percent of the protective gear requested from the national stockpile, while GOP-led Florida promptly received supplies it needed, despite a controlled outbreak at the time.“

How about we look into this, instead.

Sorry Gary. I’m fuming mad.

Leslie McCowen from Cape Cod, USA on March 09, 2021:!

Oh look:

“House GOP Trumper Dan Crenshaw bought some stock and 'forgot' to disclose it last March.”

How far we going to go with this?

Leslie McCowen from Cape Cod, USA on March 09, 2021:

LANSING, Mich. – A Michigan lawmaker was stripped of a committee chairmanship and ordered to undergo training Thursday after the state Senate concluded allegations of sexual harassment lodged by several woman, including a legislator, were credible.“

This guy? Running for gvr? Why, because he’s a Republican, the sexual harassment charges don’t count?

If he can run for gvr with these charges, how can republicans impeach Cuomo?

And, if they’re bringing charges against Democratic gvr’s, what of the Republican president, who knew of the dangers of Covid, but covered it up?

What of the Republican gvrs who downplay Covid, and fix the numbers?

Sorry......blatant politics and power grabs are unbecoming of “public servants”.

I suggest republicans go read their Bibles verses on “casting stones”.

We either apply standards to all, or to none.

Sharlee on March 09, 2021:

Living in Michigan (Macomb County) I can tell you citizens are hoping to see Whitmer investigated, outed, and impeached. She certainly sent thousands to Nursing Homes knowing they would be exposed to COVID... Not sure if you are aware once her Mitigation powers were removed she started having her orders filtered via the Health Department. We now have a brewing scandal that the head of the Health Department took money to keep what he knows to himself.
