Immigration & Illegal Aliens

James A. Watkins is an entrepreneur, musician, and a writer with four non-fiction books and hundreds of magazine articles read by millions.

Immigration & Illegal Immigrants

Americans do not seem to agree on what to do about immigration, legal and illegal. I have a clear idea about how to solve this conundrum.

My solution to the problem of illegal immigration is rather simple. First, we build a wall across our southern border to stop the inflow of illegals sneaking across.

Second, we issue a call throughout the land that all people here illegally must declare themselves. None of them who are working will be deported. Instead, we will issue work visas so that they may stay indefinitely—as long as they are gainfully employed. After a certain grace period, maybe ninety days, we will hunt down and deport any who did not report.

What we will not do is make illegal aliens automatic citizens. This is to test the progressives to see where their hearts really lie. Progressives claim that they only care about illegals out of humanitarian concerns. It is widely known that in fact what they care about is ten million new votes for their policies.

So, I propose a compromise: Illegals who are working can stay with the blessing of the United States, but they cannot vote. If this is not satisfactory to progressives, we will have unveiled their true motivations.

The Jobs Americans Won't Do

The whole idea that illegal immigrants do the jobs Americans won't do is a myth.  Illegal immigrants do the jobs Americans won't do for the wages illegal immigrants will do them for.  I propose that any illegal immigrant be paid the same wages as Americans.  This will end the exploitation of illegals and put American workers on a level playing field with them.

There are no jobs Americans will not do.  I recently took a long road trip by car across the Northwest United States.  I drove through countless little towns; stayed in many motels; ate in many restaurants.    I saw dozens of maids, waiters, busboys, lawn landscapers, and construction workers—they were all white Americans!

I spent the night in a city of the state of Washington.  In the morning I saw a line stretching for blocks outside the window of my room. When I checked out, I asked the lady at the front desk what these folks were doing out there.  She said they were in line at the county building to apply for jobs picking apples. There were a handful of Mexicans, but most were white people.

Illegal Aliens Take Jobs from Americans

I was in the business of painting private aircraft for more than ten years. I paid American workers an average of $20 an hour to work in my paint shop. Toward the end of my business, I kept hearing regular customers for my other services (fuel, maintenance, etc.) say they were going to Fort Lauderdale to have their planes painted instead of coming to my shop.

It seems the prices in Fort Lauderdale at this one particular paint shop were less than half my prices. Instead of paying $20,000 to have a Citation Jet painted, my old customers could now have it painted for $8,000. I could not figure out for the life of me how this could be done, what with overhead and all (health insurance, workers compensation, etc.). So I went to visit this paint shop for myself.

The day I visited the Fort Lauderdale paint shop, several black SUVs came screaming onto the ramp. It was ICE, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. While I was in the office of the proprietor, looking out his window, I saw the ICE agents put twenty men in a circle on the pavement in handcuffs before hauling them away.

I asked the proprietor what was going on. He said, "Ah, they just took my crew away. They'll send them back to Brazil. That's Ok. I'll have twenty more here tomorrow."

I was a stranger but he was quite open about it. He told me that they work for three dollars an hour with no benefits. They send most of the money back home. They know they'll be deported eventually. So, it's like a vacation for them, and a chance to make some real money—compared to what they make in Brazil. So that's how he paints a Citation Jet for $8,000!

Immigration Act of 1965

"This bill we sign today is not a revolutionary bill. It does not affect the lives of millions. It will not restructure the shape of our daily lives." President Lyndon Baines Johnson

The Immigration Act of 1965 completely changed America. Instead of admitting new immigrants based on what special skills they could contribute, we would now emphasize non-European immigration. America was afflicted with this bill because its voters gave the most political power that they have ever given to any one party to the Democrats in 1964—two-thirds of the Senate and House; as well as the presidency.

The ultra-liberal Americans for Democratic Action, the ACLU, and the National Lawyers Guild all fought for this change in immigration policy; as did the Communist Party USA (on the grounds that it destabilizes working Americans and would therefore make Communism more palatable). Today's population is the result of yesterday's immigration policy.

The Progressive proponents of the 1965 Immigration Act claimed it was a logical continuation of the Civil Rights legislation that dominated the political scene during that era. Democrats proclaimed that America's immigration policies were racist and that it was time we allowed people of color from the Third World to come to America and become citizens.

The truth is that people of color consistently provided votes for the Democratic Party. The Progressives of that party thought that with millions of new, reliable voters they could permanently swing the balance of power in America.

That same reasoning motivates them today with their plan for "comprehensive immigration reform," which really means to take the ten or twenty million people who snuck across the border into America illegally, and turn them into new citizen voters. Anybody against that idea is branded a racist.

The Immigration Act of 1965 was pushed through the Senate by Ted Kennedy. He had some interesting predictions about the future effects of the bill on America:

"First, our cities will not be flooded with a million immigrants annually. Under the proposed bill, the present level of immigration remains substantially the same.... Secondly, the ethnic mix of this country will not be upset. Contrary to the charges in some quarters, [the bill] will not inundate America with immigrants from any one country or area. It will not cause American workers to lose their jobs."

Of course, everything he said was wrong and he knew it at the time.

A million immigrants a year did flood our cities; immigrant levels did not stay anywhere near the same; the ethnic mix of the country was greatly upset; it did inundate America with immigrants from one country and area, namely Mexico and Latin America; and it has cost American workers millions of jobs.

As Senator Kennedy knew it would, but forgot to mention, it upset the balance of power in America. The Boston Globe credited the Immigration Act of 1965 with Obama's election in 2008.

Ted Kennedy predicted in 1965, "No immigrant visa will be issued to a person who is likely to become a public charge." 21 percent of legal immigrants receive public assistance, compared to 14 percent of native-born Americans.

Immigrants from south of our border have a far different view of government than do Americans because of how things work in their countries of origin. Americans understand perfectly "Of the People, For the People, By the People." But Third World peoples have no experience with this. What they do understand is: "If you vote for me I'll give you money."

Hispanic immigrants, by far the largest contingent, are eight times more likely than native born Americans to lack even a ninth-grade education. And they have an average IQ 25 percent lower than Americans of European ancestry. Intelligence is the single most important predictor of success in life, and contribution to society.

What Progressives love to harp on is: "We're a nation of immigrants." This is true. But here they commit the great sin of omission. They leave out the important part, which is: We are a nation of immigrants who came to this country to become Americans.

These earlier immigrants were courageous because there was no safety net in place when we became a "nation of immigrants." There was no Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, or Food Stamps. Immigrants from before the 1960s knew that if you came here you had to make it on your own merit. You do these people a sick injustice when you compare them to people who come here because we offer cradle-to-grave food, shelter, clothes, education, and medical care.

"In light of our 5 percent unemployment rate, our worries over the so called population explosion, and our menacingly mounting welfare costs, are we prepared to embrace so great a horde of the world's unfortunates? At the very least, the hidden mathematics of the bill should be made clear to the public so that they may tell their Congressmen how they feel about providing jobs, schools, homes, security against want, citizen education, and a brotherly welcome ... for an indeterminately enormous number of aliens from underprivileged lands.

"We should remember that people accustomed to such marginal existence in their own land will tend to live fully here, to hoard our bounteous minimum wages and our humanitarian welfare handouts ... lower our wage and living standards, disrupt our cultural patterns ...

"Whatever may be our benevolent intent toward many people, [the bill] fails to give due consideration to the economic needs, the cultural traditions, and the public sentiment of the citizens of the United States." (U.S. Senate, Subcommittee on Immigration and Naturalization of the Committee on the Judiciary, Washington, D.C., Feb. 10, 1965. pp. 681-687.)

The Deliberate Browning of America

In 1970, there were 9.7 million legal immigrants in the United States and 50% of them were white.  Today there are 38 million legal immigrants and only 3% of them are white.

The percentage of Americans who are white has dropped from 85% in 1960 to 60% today.  White people are now the minority in 35 of the largest 50 cities in America.

The White Race is to become a minority in America by 2042, according to projections made by the Census Bureau.  Nearly half of the births in the United States were non-whites in 2010.

This is not the result of some cosmic accident, but rather the result of a plan by Progressive ideologues that see people of color as the natural constituents necessary and vital to accomplish their ultimate goal: The destruction of America.

The composition of the American people has been altered by immigration laws designed by Progressives to create an influx of peoples from the Third World.  Once they arrive here, the Progressive ideology of Multiculturalism rejects any unifying vision of Americanization. Instead of a nation of individuals, they want America to be a nation of groups with permanent ethnic ties that bind.

America invited mass immigration from the Third World in the name of equality.  We denigrated our own history and culture, and glorified those of the Third World countries from which these immigrants came.  Proponents of Multiculturalism insist that new arrivals make no effort to assimilate; to do so they say would be "genocidal," a notion that makes a mockery of real genocide.

Birthright Citizenship

Approximately 500,000 babies are born each year in the United States to illegal aliens. Each of them automatically becomes an American citizen because of an old and misapplied law that grants birthright citizenship. This comes from the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which was passed in 1868.

The purpose of the birthright section of the Amendment was not so illegal aliens could sneak across the border while nine months pregnant and give birth to American citizens. On the contrary, it was so that slaves would automatically be granted citizenship en masse without having to go through immigration procedures. If a slave had been born here, he was automatically a citizen after this Amendment passed.

The United States is the only First World country that has such a law, besides Canada. No country in Europe has birthright citizenship. I can only find twelve countries in the whole world that have it.

A survey done in California found that 15% of all new Hispanic mothers admitted to having come across the border specifically to give birth in the United States so that their babies would be born American citizens. All of the babies' relatives are then eligible to apply for legal immigrant status under the family reunification laws. None of the illegal alien mothers have health insurance or any money, of course, and the cost of these births is estimated at $5B per year.

Illegal Aliens

Progressives are hell-bent on legalizing the 12 to 20 million people who have snuck across our border.  And they in fact want open borders, to welcome all the world's poor to move to America.  Their reasons are simple: the world's poor would be voters with little skills or education who would surely vote for Communism.  And Communism is the secret goal of Progressives.

Every attempt to seal our border is met by Progressives with the phony line that "only totalitarian nations build walls."  That is not true number one, and number two totalitarian countries build walls to keep people IN, not OUT. Nobody ever tries to sneak into a totalitarian country.  They try to get out.

Illegal aliens are granted free public education and free medical care across the United States.  Some states offer them free, or reduced tuition, college scholarships.  13 states give them drivers licenses.

It is estimated that 3% of the people called for jury duty are illegal aliens.  If they are called for jury duty, they can certainly vote.

31 American cities have proclaimed themselves to be "sanctuary cities" for illegal aliens, meaning that they welcome illegal aliens and will protect them from deportation in open defiance of federal immigration law.

87% of illegal aliens who have been deported do not leave the country, they simply disappear.  30% of federal prisoners are foreign-born.  Over one million crimes are committed each year by illegal aliens.  In Los Angeles, 95% of outstanding murder warrants are for illegal aliens, as well as 67% of all felony warrants.

An estimated 60% of gang members in California are illegal aliens.  They are heavily implicated in drug trafficking and sex slavery as well.  The people who perpetrated the 9/11 massacres were all illegal aliens.

The Lesson of Mexifornia

In the 1970’s, California had the seventh most educated workforce in the nation. Now, the latest census data shows it is at the bottom of the list. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, this is the result of massive immigration from south of our border. As the nation grapples with expanding immigration, California presents a preview of what might happen to the nation’s workforce.

California’s labor force has the highest percentage of high school dropouts in the nation: 16 percent. When only looking at immigrants, the percentage increases to 33 percent.  39 percent of immigrant households are recipients of welfare programs.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Eliseo Medina is the vice president of the radical SEIU; a prominent member of the Democratic Socialists of America; and an advisor to President Obama.

Speaking of Latino voters, Medina said "When they voted in November, they voted overwhelmingly for progressive candidates. Barack Obama got two out of every three voters that showed up. If we reform the immigration laws, it puts 12 million people on the path to citizenship and eventually voters. Can you imagine if we have, even the same ratio, two out of three? If we have eight million new voters we will be creating a governing coalition for the long term, not just for an election cycle."

Brad ~ Me too. Amen.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 13, 2019:

Thank you very much Wesman Todd Shaw for sharing those quotes with me. I think it is the best we can hope under the circumstances.

Brad on July 11, 2019:

Great, now looking forward to President Trump's EO to gather all the existing information and find out how many citizens, non citizens, and illegals. What a difference when people in the Executive Branch don't leak, and they keep it going forward. Barr!

Wesman Todd Shaw from Kaufman, Texas on July 11, 2019:

I've never been prouder to be a US citizen than I am now:

The Supreme Court ruled that we must provide more explanation that would have produced even more litigation and considerable time delays... these delays would have prevented us from completing the census on time, it's deeply regrettable, but will not stop us...

We are pursuing a new option to ensure a complete and timely count of the non-citizen population. Today I will be issuing an executive order to put this plan into effect immediately. I am hereby ordering every department and agency in the federal government to provide the department of commerce with all requested records regarding the number of citizens and non-citizens in our country. They must furnish all legally accessible records in their possession, immediately... We will leave no stone unturned...

The Census Bureau projected that using previously available records, it could determine the citizenship status of 90% of our population or more. With today's executive order which eliminates long standing obstacles to data sharing, we're aiming to count everyone. This will allow us to have an even more complete count of citizens than asking the single question alone...

The Census Bureau can use this information along with information collected through the questionnaire to create the official census. In other words, as a result of today's executive order, we'll be able to ensure the 2020 Census generates an accurate count of how many citizens, non-citizens, and illegal aliens are in the United State of America...

With today's order we will collect all of the information to conduct an accurate census and make responsible decisions about public policy, voting rights and representation in Congress

The problem is that any new (federal court) decision would be subject to immediate challenge as a new claim in the 3 ongoing district court cases. In addition there are injunctions currently in place that forbid adding the question. There is simply no way to litigate these issues and obtain relief from the current injunctions in time to implement any new decision without jeopardizing our ability to carry out the census. Which we're not going to do... So as a practical matter, the Supreme Court's decision closed all paths to adding the question to the 2020 census.

The course the President has chosen today will bring unprecedented resources to bare on determining how many citizens and non-citizens are in our country. And will yield the best data the government has had on citizenship in many decades. That information will be used for countless purposes...

There is a current dispute over whether illegal aliens can be included for apportionment purposes. Depending on the resolution of that dispute, this data may be relevant to those considerations. We will be studying this issue.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 11, 2019:

Paula ~ I am very impressed by Dinesh. I got to meet him once. I have a couple of his books. The latest one is excellent. His second movie was pretty good but that first movie was awesome. The one where, as you say, "in a theater where everyone stood and applauded at the end.

I am well pleased to see we are both Dinesh fans. Makes me proud to 'know' you. :D

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 11, 2019:

No worries Brad. I am sorry we had a misunderstanding.

Suzie from Carson City on July 09, 2019:

James.... I'm pleased you mention Dinesh. I am quite enamored & impressed by this amazing man, speaker, author and Movie Producer, as well. I make it a point to take in as much of his work as possible. I especially enjoy the Talks he gives on College campus facilities all over America. There is usually a Q&A with students afterward and it's clear that Dinesh receives the attention and respect he deserves. This in itself speaks volumes since we know what intense liberal bias students are exposed to daily.

As it happens, on a rare occasion, there will be an ugly incident of outburst or disrespectful idiot in the crowd. Dinesh maintains his dignity and professional demeanor until Security takes care of the nonsense.

His documentaries, IMO, are "must-see" movies. Extremely truthful, well-presented and powerful. I saw one of his first films in a theater where everyone stood and applauded at the end. It gave me goosebumps to see Americans showing respect, gratitude and acceptance for Mr. D'Sousa. He earns it.

Brad on July 09, 2019:

I didn't say that in my comment.

I was giving you my view, not commenting or responding to your comment. Except that I didn't need Dinesh, I have seen and heard him but that is all.

I don't know where you got this one, "Why on Earth would you say that by recommending a documentary I think you might enjoy and find enlightening I am saying, “I want other people to make your decisions for you.”"

My point was how I come up with my opinions, and it simply meant I didn't need the reference to Dinesh.

I am not attacking you, and I am not in opposition to you.

I am disappointed that you let your AGW article get ridiculed and commandeered.

I hope that straightens out any misunderstanding.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 09, 2019:

Brad ~ Now you are getting silly. Why on Earth would you say that by recommending a documentary I think you might enjoy and find enlightening I am saying, “I want other people to make your decisions for you.” Poppycock. I have never in my life suggested to any person that I think other people ought to make their decisions. You must be thinking about somebody else. I do not deserve such as insult.

Brad on July 05, 2019:

Thanks. NO, I am sure it is great, but I don't rely on others to make my decisions, or views, and that is why I am not a republican, democrats or any label. You know that most of my views don't come from repeating republican sound bites. I look at what is being done, not what is being said.

Obama was the DNCs created version of an Anti Christ with the purpose of making a new paradigm for democrats in their plan to socially re-engineer Americans into their vision. It didn't fail.

What did fail was their attempt to reconstitute Hillary Clinton, and that set them back a presidency.

They owed Hillary for choosing Obama over her, and they gave her a lead over Sanders even before the campaign started, and they helped get Sanders out when he started to catch up as the primary was coming up.

Then after spending $1.2 Billion and losing to Trump who only had half of that the democrats invoked a coup type excuse for losing a fixed race. The financial and power backers needed to be soothed by the idea that the election was fixed by the Russians. They would say, how else could Trump have beaten the favorite. And the rest is history.

The republicans are wimps, and they left the democrats steal their lunch money. Without Trump the republicans would be sitting this presidency out.

The point is that my view was not copied from Fox or anyone else. It may not be right or correct, but that is the way I see it.

What I don't understand is why there are so many of these old white men that aren't Jewish:) that feel so guilty they believe and support the social re-engineering of the left. One only has to look at the ACLU to see Jewish guilt in action.

I gave you this view so that you can see where I come from on politics.

Until Trump, the previous 32 years were filled with bad presidents and congress in gridlock. They don't like Trump because he has a new paradigm for American politics and that is Country and people over party. This is not the goal of either party.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 05, 2019:

Brad ~ Obama hates America. For the reasons why, I suggest Dinesh D-Souza's first film. Have you seen it?

Thank you, God Bless You, and Happy Independence Day!!

Brad on July 04, 2019:

I didn't know that about illegal aliens and the TSA

I guess I was disappointed when your comment just corrected the date of the Real Id, and nothing else. This is a pivotal act that has tried to be put into action twice before, once in 2015 and then in 2018. Now, it seems to become more serious.

I guess my expectations were too high, but they were based on your track record.

I meant who can't get on a Plane!

Don't worry about it, I will get over it.

Have a Happy 4th, while it still exists. It could change to Cinco De Maya !

I shared this with T about my new profile picture. There were 4 people in the full picture, including Hillary Clinton. They were in front of a large American Flag and saying the pledge of Allegiance. Three of them including Hillary had the hand over their heart, while Obama in the front had his hands above his crotch.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 04, 2019:

Brad ~ I agree with your two statements, "Of course no one can prove illegals are voting because no one can check the voters." AND "I guess we will have to wait for Oct 2020 to see who can't get on a train." And I answered your sole question. I'm not sure what it is you want me to do that I am not doing?

Brad on July 03, 2019:

2005 yes.

But you really didn't comment on it, did you?

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 03, 2019:

Thank you Brad (NOYFOB). I think Real ID was passed in 2005.

Brad on July 02, 2019:

Your statement is the CA voting rules. Of course no one can prove illegals are voting because no one can check the voters.

I guess we will have to wait for Oct 2020 to see who can't get on a train.

Real ID has been on the books since 2009?

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 02, 2019:

Brad NOYFOB ~ Thank you for sharing this very interesting information with me. I'm not sure what to make of it except I have read that illegal aliens are the only people who can board planes in America without proving who they are. At bottom, I believe it is all about allowing them to vote while state officials look the other way and say, "There are no illegal aliens voting and no you may not review our ballots."

Brad on June 30, 2019:

In October 20, 2020 to get on a domestic flight you have to have Real ID.

States have to change their driver licenses to comply with the TSA Real ID.

: Provide proof of identity (for example: U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport, certificate of naturalization or citizenship, employment authorization document, permanent resident card, or foreign passport with an approved form I-94).

Show a California residency document (for example: utility bill, rental agreement, mortgage bill, medical document).

Present proof of your Social Security Number (for example: Social Security Card, W-2 form, SSA-1099 form, Non-SSA-1099 form, Paystub (with full SSN).

Valid California driver licenses and identification cards can be used to board commercial flights until October 1, 2020.

Also, if you have a valid U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card, military ID, or other federally approved identification, you may use this as your form of identification to pass a TSA checkpoint at airports nationwide and visit a secure federal building or military installations at any time.

"To be REAL ID-compliant, the state must incorporate anti-counterfeit technology into the card, verify the applicant’s identity and conduct background checks for employees involved in issuing driver licenses."

"In verifying for a REAL ID-compliant ID or license, the applicant must fall under the following 9 categories: (1) U.S. citizen or national; (2) U.S. lawful permanent resident or lawful temporary resident; (3) conditional permanent resident status in the U.S.; (4) has an approved asylum application or entered in refugee status; (5) has a valid, unexpired nonimmigrant visa; (6)has a pending application for asylum; (7) has pending or approved temporary protected status; (8) has approved deferred action status or (9) has a pending application for adjustment of status to that of lawful permanent or conditional resident.

It is apparent from the list that only applicants who have valid and lawful presence in the United States or who are not in violation of immigration laws are permitted to apply for state licenses that are REAL ID Act compliant. Those who are unauthorized immigrants or who have fallen out status may not be eligible to apply for the REAL ID compliant licenses."

James this is interesting because in 2013 Gov Brown had AB 60 passed allowing illegal aliens to get CA driver licenses that were identical to everyone else. And the police, if they stop them were not allowed to ask about immigration status.

BTW, recently the very liberal SCOTUS rejected Trumps addition of asking about citizens in the 2020 census.

My point is that using the info I provided above about the Real ID requirements, only those illegal under asylum will be able to apply.

I find that suspicious that CA would be in favor of them as it nullifies the 2013 AB 60 illegal aliens getting driver licenses.

There has to be a liberal catch in here somewhere?

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on April 26, 2019:

Brad Masters ~ I am with you all the way, friend. Every word you wrote here I agree with. Well done.

Brad on April 24, 2019:

I think it is strange that none of the open border lefties had any problem with the position of this article.

The high cost, the danger from criminals and even terrorists, as well as how they fill the prisons and jails with illegals. There is also the crowding of schools and emergency wards with illegals getting free education and healthcare. There may be as many as 30 million illegals in this country, and we don't know how many of them are voting in our elections because many states don't require voter id, and states like CA given the illegals driver licenses identical to California citizens.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on April 18, 2019:

Brad Masters ~ Thank you very much for taking the time to read my article. I am well pleased to read that you agree with my prescription.

Brad on April 17, 2019:

Your approach to this problem is still valid today, and maybe even more so.

"My solution to the problem of illegal immigration is rather simple. First, we build a wall across our southern border to stop the inflow of illegals sneaking across.

The border wall is less that half the price that congress gave to NJ and NY to build a subway tunnel that benefits only these two states. While a border wall protects the country.

Sounds like a fair deal, they don't become illegals, they keep their jobs, and anyone not working is still an illegal and needs to leave. This would in part be the criminals, gang members, and freebie takers.

What we will not do is make illegal aliens automatic citizens.

That process of automatic citizens just doesn't make sense. The work program does make sense.

This is to test the progressives to see where their hearts really lie. Progressives claim that they only care about illegals out of humanitarian concerns. It is widely known that in fact what they care about is ten million new votes for their policies."

If they can't become citizens they can't legally vote, and that would end the democrat so called compassion.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on August 03, 2018:

bradmasterOCcal ~ You are most welcome.

Brad on August 01, 2018:

Thank you for the article and I hope that you get more comments from both sides of the issue.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on August 01, 2018:

bradmasterOCcal ~ Thank you very much for taking the time to read my article. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. Well said.

Brad on July 29, 2018:

I agree with your solution.

But, illegal aliens also include criminals, killers, terrorists ( how would we know), people carrying diseases, no committed allegiance to the US, and the open borders allow $20 billion of illegal drugs in the country. Human Traffickers, gun running, and criminal to protect these criminal assets. On the US side the people consuming these drugs, and they cause several kinds of problems in the US. The drug dealers peddling their drugs, the people overdosing, and committing crimes to pay for the drugs, drug cartel enforcers to protect their investments.

Also, the prisons and jails in the country can't hold all of those criminals and addicts. And neither do we have any effective way of treating drugs addicts, and this overloads are hospitals, and clinics. It has to also factor into the suicides in the country.

It also doesn't help when cities and states in the US give sanctuary from deportation to even the Convicted Illegal Alien Felons. These felons have already committed one felony, why do they get more chances. And these are the ones that have been caught and convicted, what about the other felons that haven't been caught?

just a thought.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 13, 2018:

Ken Burgess ~ Thank you for taking the time to read my article. I appreciate your comments as well, and your kind compliments. I agree, based on personal experience, that most immigrants do come here with a humble heart. And I surely agree with you about building the wall. What I am against mostly is legalizing illegal aliens, thereby giving the right to vote in our elections, which is truly what this is all about to the Left (please see my last sentence in my article).

You are so right about the problems in Europe; the crime, the rapes, and the intentions of the migrants represent an enormous problem for which I see no solution that is politically correct.

Ken Burgess from Florida on July 12, 2018:

Very good article, I tend to agree with Mr. Steel below who stated: " Truth is (I'm from California) MOST immigrants come with a humble attitude. They are grateful, hard working. Like other immigrant families, by the 2nd generation, they are successful. By the 3rd generation, they are fully American. There is very little problem, really."

However I also agree with Building a wall, stopping the drug gangs from crossing at will, and doing what they want. And limiting the amount of immigrants so that our system is not overwhelmed.

I for one have no concern with the numbers of people of Hispanic descent who come here, so long as they assimilate to American customs and beliefs. Which the vast majority do.

We are fortunate we are not facing the millions flooding into Europe, because those people have no interest in assimilating, no interest in adapting to the culture of the host country... they want a free ride until they have enough numbers to overthrow the host nation and instill their own belief system.

John R Wilsdon from Superior, Arizona on May 15, 2017:

Another point that crops up routinely and makes little sense is the argument that we need immigrants (as if building a wall to stop the illegal flow will retard our economy). The United States can have all the immigrants it wants legally. We have encouraged immigrants with skills for years through a system of quotas that can be modified. I recall the Prime Minister of Singapore shaking his head in an interview with Charlie Rose. On growing the economy, he said that by allowing thousands and thousands of watermelon pickers into the country (not that they were all melon pickers, but unskilled) we couldn't grow an economy. Of course, that was a true statement, but politically unacceptable for an American to say.

If you offer a wage that someone can live on, there will be plenty of workers.

This hub should be required reading in public school, but don't hold your breath.

I do not lock my doors at night because I hate everybody outside my home but to protect those inside, whom I love.

The progressives are just being their diabolical self's with the Immigration laws. Wow the long term planning of the left is impressive, the 1965 Immigration Bill, planted the seeds to get Obama elected.

"30% of federal prisoners are foreign-born. Over one million crimes are committed each year by illegal aliens. In Los Angeles, 95% of outstanding murder warrants are for illegal aliens, as well as 67% of all felony warrants. An estimated 60% of gang members in California are illegal aliens."

There's a lot of denial about the crime rates for illegals, but you layed out some impressive figures to prove it is a significant problem.

Sanxuary on January 31, 2017:

I see a lot of bad comments on here. If people talked reasonable we could maybe find a soulution. Having a wall is about stopping crime. Its not much about immigration to be honest. If we could say that people would understand that message. You have to go back as far as the 1980's to deal with immigration. You have to start with those who have been waiting for citizen ship for decades and work your way forward. A real plan in dealing with the problem. We should definately slow it down for a while but stopping it completely will not likely happen or should it. To much immigration is not a good thing for any country. We need a period of stability. The point is hate and all this other trash does not do anything to solve any problems.

My problem with your article is that you made it political. We had 8 years of Bush and 8 years of Obama. Did you think all these immigrants arrived in only 8 years. The reason for all these immigrants is the same reason we out-sourced millions of jobs and its because of cheap labor. Every Corporation in America is to blame and every Politician benefited from reducing the wages of people until they could no longer pay their bills. During the 8 years of recession we could test the idea if Americans would do these jobs. If they do not pay and you can not live then they are likely to keep looking for better paying jobs. To think its one party or another is very unlikely.

Grace Marguerite Williams from the Greatest City In The World-New York City, New York on July 13, 2014:

Mr. Watkins, you have hit the nail on the head. Illegal immigration has become quite problematic in America. It is now even going to be even more problematic with the amnesty program implemented by Obama and his administration. Obama contends that these illegals should be granted access to America. Obama went further to proclaim that the illegals are good for the country and many Liberals agree with this illogical premises.

What people refuse to acknowledge that illegals drive wages down. In this case, the illegals that are under the amnesty program have no contributable skills so they will be on the welfare rolls for a duration. They will use our hospitals and other social services whose costs will eventually go to the taxpayers who are overburdened enough as it is.

When these illegals do get jobs, it will be the poorest Americans who will be replaced, going into an underclass. Besides that, many of these illegals are criminals and gang members which means that crime is going to escalate. Many Texans, Californians, and Arizonians are reported as to how illegals are destroying their neighborhoods and properties. It is time to stop these illegals by establishing stronger borders and STRONGER militias. Something has to be done regarding this situation before America becomes a bankrupt, 3rd world country. We know that the LIEberals won't mind this at all; many in the ranks will actually rejoice and be elated over this.

Steel Engineer from Kiev, Ukraine on July 07, 2014:

A few thoughts:

1. The news is biased. They have an agenda: division.

2. Truth is (I'm from California) MOST immigrants come with a humble attitude. They are grateful, hard working. Like other immigrant families, by the 2nd generation, they are successful. By the 3rd generation, they are fully American. There is very little problem, really.

3. The real goal is not to shrink WHITES in the U.S. It is to shrink CHRISTIANS in the U.S. The nations favored for immigration are primarily catholic, muslim, and other non-Christians.

4. Look around you. All over the world, the secret society satanist end-game is in motion. They are murdering, hunting, and slaughtering Christians all over the world.

5. If you don't know Jesus, or if you are straddling the fence... better pick up a Bible and find out about salvation.

Well said. It is amazing how seemingly intelligent people can spout off such tripe in exchange for approval of the things they do.

I totally agree with your remarks, especially that there exists a desire—both subconscious and conscious—to destroy America. You are absolutely right that the New Left blames the wrong source of every problem. They refuse to consider individuals might have moral failings, and that social maladies might be the fault of individual actions not "society." The only sin the Left acknowledges is having sound judgment, particularly about the behaviors of others.

That is an amazing reference from Chairman Mao. I would say even he was on to something there.

Thank you very much for your brilliant commentary. I sincerely appreciate the visit and your compliments.

John R Wilsdon from Superior, Arizona on September 30, 2012:

It is amazing how boneheaded some liberals are. The fact that the comments here of the left tend to be based on emotion rather than fact are a testament to a subconscious desire to destroy the United States. When the country implodes (or explodes), they will be the first to blame independent thinkers for the problems they will have trying to survive. Humans have an innate ability to deny what is uncomfortable. Not enough money for trillions of social welfare, it must be the fault of those who have succeeded. Don't have a cell phone? It must be unfair cell phone distributors. Not enough money to pay all the health professionals for care? It must be because we don't have socialist medicine. The fact that we are 16 trillion dollars in debt? It must be because Congress didn't appropriate enough money for the needy. The fact that we now have debt that equals the GDP? Obama's plan to spend even more now has nothing to do with it. Can't control the influx of people from abroad from entering the United States and using up far more money than paid in social security taxes or federal income taxes? A two-party system mired in self-interest and bogged down can't be the reason!

Mao Zedong used to say that what surprised him about the United States was its ability to get out of huge problems it created for itself. I think if he were alive, he would be flabbergasted to see where we are now. I am not a communist, but we can learn things from leaders of all sorts. I sincerely hope we can pull ourselves out of the mess we are in now.

Once again, good hub.

I'll be looking for those upcoming articles, and I've no doubt they'll generate a great deal of interest, thus jacking up your author score.

My own lack of writing is due in part to running a business - that's been the case from the first day I joined Hub Pages. Still, I believed I'd have the time to write far more often than I have. Unfortunately, for nearly the past two years I've been plagued with a health condition that affects my ability to focus intently upon anything for longer than 20-30 minutes, making it nearly impossible for me to research and write. It also affects my energy level; I battle severe fatigue every day to keep my business going.

I recall you mentioning you were writing a book; I'll look forward to buying it!

Best to you.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on August 27, 2012:

Hxprof— It is a distinct pleasure to hear from you again, my old friend. You must be keeping busy as I see you haven't put out many Hubs. It has been almost six months since I have published a Hub. I have been working daily on getting my first book done. I am contemplating putting out a flurry of Hubs before the election; maybe 20 over 60 days time.

One reason I quit was that the HubPages Staff leaned on my author score—which they deny. My Author Score was always between 95 and 100 for two years until a controversy brewed in my Hub "Black Guys with White Girls." It was my money maker, drawing 300,000 hits. All of a sudden it was shut down one day because of comments made by visitors. I deleted the offending comments and the Hub was reinstated but demonetized and the next day my Author Score had dropped 20 POINTS! It is 74 now. I do not care because of ego reasons. I care because of the principle of being unfairly punished and HubPages lying about it. As if it could drop 20 points in a day all by itself.

I share your objection to the comment made by one of the visitors to this Page: "I believe that This country was built on Immigrants so Who are any of us to say who can and cannot stay?"

As you say: "Every sovereign nation has the right AND the responsibility to make a determination regards who comes in and who doesn't - security alone demands that every nation exercise that right."

Thank you for the correspondence. :)

Hxprof on August 25, 2012:

James, I checked in on this piece to see what kinds of comments it has generated over the last 18 months, and my, what a read! This is one of the more astounding comments I read: "I believe that This country was built on Immigrants so Who are any of us to say who can and cannot stay".

I've heard this kind of thing so many times over the past several years, and it sickens me. There's a sense of entitlement and bitterness bound up in this kind of thinking. After all, America is wealthy and it's incredibly selfish for us to keep that wealth to ourselves!

Every sovereign nation has the right AND the responsibility to make a determination regards who comes in and who doesn't - security alone demands that every nation exercise that right. But here in the US we've failed, and folks like LanaLu think that's a good thing.

Perhaps if they lost a friend or family member to a terrorist attack committed by someone we 'welcomed' via our open borders it would alter their thinking just a bit.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on August 11, 2012:

LanaLu— Welcome to my Hub! I appreciate the visit and I thank you for your excellent remarks.

You are absolutely correct that immigrants have contributed much to this country. But the waves of immigrants you speak of came long before we offered cradle to grave government money to the tune of trillions of dollars. Those immigrants came across the ocean with the knowledge that they would have to make something out of themselves or starve to death—a powerful motivator AND a powerful disincentive to anyone without gumption.

It is quite an opposite thing to tell people: "If you can sneak across the border, American taxpayers will support you and your children for the rest of your lives!"

You ask: "Who are any of us to say who can and cannot stay?"

Well, we are a nation of laws and we live under the Rule of Law. Are you saying we should have open borders and invite the world's six billion poor people to all move here so we can support them all? Are you saying no nation should have a border? That no nation should have any immigration law? Who are we to say? We are the taxpaying voters in a democratic republic! :-)

What nation has the most lenient immigration laws on earth? The USA!

john000— Thank you very much for taking the time to read my article. I really appreciate the voted up and useful and I enjoyed reading your remarks immensely. Well put!

You wrote wisely: "Progressiveness is synonymous with ignoring reality."

You write: "Mexico is a rich country in many ways; there is no reason for the inequality present there."

I am going to be politically incorrect but bluntly honest. The only reason Mexico is not as successful a country as America is that they were founded, are populated by, and run by Mexicans. We were founded by, populated by, and run by Americans. If our people of the last 200 years had been in Mexico and Mexicans in America then Mexico would be the superior country. It is People that make a place great or poor—not geography.

I like your theory about mass illegal immigration preventing a revolution in Mexico. You can bet that the Mexican authorities are aware of this and that is why they actively encourage their own poor citizens to flee their own country and sneak into America.

The fact is that the average IQ of a Mexican is about 74 while the average American comes in around 92. That does not mean they cannot be wonderful human beings with loving hearts. Of course they can and I personally have never met a Mexican I didn't like. But that 20 percent is a huge gap when you consider that intelligence is a top predictor for success in life. So why on earth would we want to have a 100 million Mexicans flood into America? Only a people who long to kill their own nation would want that. And that is exactly what the New Left wants. To kill America, which they revile.

Red Oaks— There is absolutely no need to apologize whatsoever. I very much enjoyed reading your story. Her main question, "We are not moving on until you explain to me what your definition of an 'illegal person' is" is an easy one. In all civilized countries of the earth the definition is the same: a person who is within the boundaries of a nation state illegally. That can be a person who snuck across a border or one who entered any country legally and agreed to only stay a certain period of time. This is taken very seriously nearly everywhere—especially in Mexico! :-)

Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.

itakins and Rod Marsden, It doesn't take mush for religion to enter into the picture. Both the Catholic church and Mormans advocate large families. Catholicism through their views on birth control and the Latter Day Saints who promulgate large families so that the church will grow exponentially. It is also interesting to note that both churches believe that charity begins at home. As a side note, I am not a member of either church.

John R Wilsdon from Superior, Arizona on July 31, 2012:

There is a lot of meat in this article. We have reached a point in our history where denial is of the order. Progressiveness is synonymous with ignoring reality. If you look at the economic situation in the world, and all of the factors contributing to it, there is little doubt.

I fear that the Union may not be able to solve the issue of illegal immigration (here it is again, as you pointed out, ILLEGAL IS OFFENSIVE?) - but will again pass laws that sound great but are ineffective in stopping the flow.

I have an argument that has actually caused a few liberals to stop and think (I think that was what was happening). Here it is:

By arguing that illegal aliens have a right to free whatever, by ignoring the problem of uncontrolled immigration, and by acting as a pressure release valve for the social problems of Mexico, liberals in America are preventing citizens of Mexico from supporting a popular revolution. Mexico is a rich country in many ways; there is no reason for the inequality present there, except that corrupt politicians have been in control for a long time. By having a stiff immigration policy, we enhance the Mexican people's chance of a successful political revolution which can bring about the social changes required to reform education, medicine, housing, employment, the judicial system, drug cartels, and just about anything else you can think of that causes so much pain for the citizens of Mexico. By allowing the free flow of illegal immigrants, we are actively engaged in stifling political change for those people. Shame on us.

Voted up and useful.

James -- Thank you, James! See, I was hanging out with my friend (a bass player) at a pizza restaurant. A friend of his joined us and I started talking to her. She said she was a high school English teacher and a member of the Mississippi Writer's Guild so I told her about Hubpages. Having a Kindle with her, she pulled this site up and I sort of playfully told her that I was a contributor here. She didn't believe me at first, so I just grinned and told her my username. I wanted her to check out my Hub about 80s hair bands. But, when she saw the names of one of my other Hubs -- The Abortion Illusion -- all expression drifted from her face. At that point, she turned serious. I tried to tell her not to worry about that Hub and to read some of my other ones but it did absolutely no good. . . She went on the attack. . .

Next, she started looking through my recent activity and noticed that I had commented on this Hub. At that point, she became loud. It was really embarrasing; people were starting to look at us. She demanded to know what I thought about illegal aliens. I said, quietly, "Oh, I don't know. I was hoping you could critique my hub about 80s music as I have never had an English teacher review it". She snapped. "No! Wait! We are not moving on until you explain to me what your definition of an 'illegal person' is".

At that point, I stopped smiling and shifted in my seat a little. Luckily, she softened up in response and pulled up my Hub about 80s music. She became very passive aggressive at that point as she critiqued my writing. She pointed out so many errors in this, rambling, monotone, fashion. I was still a little sore about her getting so loud and was not taking her critique well. She made no effort to point out anything good about my Hub. Then, she started accusing me of rolling my eyes (which I did not do) as she apparently tried to destroy my self esteem. I feel sorry for her students if they must endure this same type of thing.

The bottom line is that I did not tell her to read my Hub about abortion or to judge me based on my commenting activity. She went on a deliberate attack against me anyway. The only thing I could think of to defend myself when she pointed out my run-on sentences, was that Faulkner used run-on sentences profusely. I was actually trying to change the subject to Faulkner. That was definitely a poorly planned come-back on my part. People thought I was comparing myself to Faulkner. Actually, I think they knew that wasn't the case but were merely turning on me and using anything they could think of to attack me.

The conflict could have precipitated as a result of suspicion of conservatism in what was apparently a leftist space. I decided to avoid giving anyone any ammunition to use against me from that point forward and deleted my work here. College towns are hard to navigate socially these days.

My friend started talking to someone else during all of this. He knew what was going on. He has lived here for many years and knows how to protect himself from nasty liberals. I am following suit -- no one will ever dig up any dirt on me in public like that again.

Sorry for using your so much of your comment thread for this story.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 30, 2012:

Red Oaks— I am very sorry to hear that you deleted all of your Hubs. Especially because people called you names and subjected you to such withering criticism. I thought your writing was good. Maybe not as good as Faulkner. :D

I am working hard on my book. I hope to have it done before long.

Who excoriated you for commenting on this Hub because of its title? There should not be anything offensive about the term "illegal alien." That is an accurate description of millions of folks. They snuck into the country in violation of the law. Native Americans did not have immigration law—or any law—since they lacked a written language.

Thank you for engaging with me on this and several other subjects. Take care.

Red Oaks from Starkville, MS on July 16, 2012:

Oh, and I almost forgot. I got massively excoriated for even commenting on this Hub because the title has the term "illegal aliens" in it. I was told that that term is offensive and not to use it. I was also told that I am an illegal alien because I am not Native American. So, it's okay to call me an illegal alien but real illegal aliens must be called "undocumented workers". See, this has nothing to do with one person being offensive to another. This is a matter of radical Leftists (who are the majority here) defining anything that is not consistent with radical Leftism as offensive. This is typical college town behavior. I should have never trusted anyone to view my work here.

Red Oaks from Starkville, MS on July 15, 2012:

That's okay, James. I deleted all my Hubs after basically being called mentally retarded by a person who is both a member of the Mississippi Writer's Guild and a public school teacher. I tried to accept the criticism in good spirits, but was accused of "rolling my eyes" and of being too egotistical to learn. You know, I am thick skinned, and try to be a "sport" about everything, including when being heavily criticized. But this time, even my most diligent attempts at accepting criticism from those who know more than me did absolutely no good. She told me that I write on a level that is far below high school and poured massive derision upon everything I had written before even making it through my article. I did not appreciate her unmitigated antagonism but, to protect myself from further ridicule, deleted everything I had written. I tried to point out that William Faulkner did not follow conventional syntax by any stretch of the imagination, and that some of his run-on sentences were over a page in length. Then, I got accused of comparing myself to Faulkner (which is completely ridiculous). But it got really ugly at that point and everyone turned on me. Anyway, keep up the good work. I look forward to your book. Don't worry about me. Writing just wasn't my thing.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on July 11, 2012:

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on June 29, 2012:

Red Oaks— Hey Ben! I apologize for taking so long to respond to your outstanding comments. I have been plugging away trying to finish my first book.

Yes, statistics show that "Intelligence is the single most important predictor of success in life, and contribution to society." And as you say, this is not politically correct because, to start with, to progressives all people are equally intelligent and if any test says otherwise there is something wrong with the test, probably cultural bias. (As if 2+2 doesn't equal 4 in all cultures). :D LOL

You wrote: "Progressives think that every social ill is due to one class oppressing another, all cultures contribute equally, and rigging the game for 'victim classes' will repair them."

Progressives are all about destroying the heterosexual Christian white male. Or as they put it much more nicely: "Ending the hegemony of white males."

You make great points about Mexico. Some things come to mind. One, Mexicans claim they want Texas and California back. They seem to imply that had California and Texas been part of Mexico the last 150 years it would not be like the rest of Mexico. Politically correctness prohibits us from saying the obvious truth that what made these states great was Anglos. What made Mexico is Mexicans. Do people really want the United States to become like Mexico? If that is desirable then why do Mexcians come here by the tens of millions and why do very few Americans move to Mexico?

You write: "Mexico LOST the Mexican War and the U.S. government still paid Mexico for the southwestern United States. In fact, the total that the U.S. paid Mexico was even greater than the Louisiana Purchase."

I am amazed that Lefties constantly blast America for its immigration policies when the United States allows far more legal immigrants in than any country on earth and treats its illegals better than any other nation too. Nothing is good enough for the Left except the destruction of America. That is what they want and what they work for around the clock.

You write: "Leftists don't seem to understand that it is not cultural diversity that makes a nation strong; it is cultural solidarity and homogeneity. Any nation that is made up of minorities with competing agendas is an unstable nation. We will soon see an America without any Americans but with grievance camps in constant political conflict."

Wise and discerning words. Diversity has no benefit whatsoever but it is harped on as a universal good every waking hour. Unity is what is good, not diversity.

You are absolutely correct that "Illegals do the jobs Americans won't do" is nothing but a bunch of crap.

Thank you very much for reading my article. I enjoyed your brilliant remarks.

Red Oaks from Starkville, MS on June 20, 2012:

Few people are aware of this, as it is in defiance with the politically correct drivel that socio-economic stratification, racism, classism, and perhaps even xenophobia are to blame. (I finally read The Bell Curve, by the way, in case you could not tell -- great read!)

It is certainly better to be born poor and with an IQ under the right distribution tail of the bell curve than to be born into wealthy family business legacy. However, progressives think that every social ill is due to one class oppressing another, all cultures contribute equally, and rigging the game for "victim classes" will repair them. And, no, I am not basking in elitism here -- my IQ is not that high.

You also pointed out that:

"What Progressives love to harp on is: We're a nation of immigrants."

This is a very destructive example of an incessant Leftist pseudo-intellectual claptrap. What they seem to forget is that Mexico LOST the Mexican War and the U.S. government still paid Mexico for the southwestern United States. In fact, the total that the U.S. paid Mexico was even greater than the Louisiana Purchase. In addition, the U.S. extended a very generous immigration plan to Mexico on top of that -- one of the most leneant immigration plans any First World nation has ever granted a Third World country. The Leftists don't seem to understand that it is not cultural diversity that makes a nation strong; it is cultural solidarity and homogeneity. Any nation that is made up of minorities with competing agendas is an unstable nation. We will soon see an America without any Americans but with grievance camps in constant political conflict.

Also, the liberals clamor about being "humanitarian." However, do they ever stop to consider all the diseases that illegal immigrants have brought to the U.S. Is it just me, or are efforts to keep disease out of our nation a pretty good example of humanitarianism? With illegal immigration, it is impossible to even follow our own policy of disease screening immigrant hopefuls.

Also, it is nausea ad infinitum to even think that illegal aliens are voting. The ballots are even printed in Spanish in many states. There is so much wrong with this.

Many of the illegals are also trained guerrilla warfare combatants. They mail decapitated heads of police officers to the officers' families. Illegal aliens have even been caught at the border trying to smuggle highly enriched uranium into our country -- enough for a nuke suitcase. If the "humanitarian" Left thinks the Columbine massacre was bad, they need to wait until a guerrilla drug cartell hijaks one of our modern socialist university campuses (where guns have already been siezed from American students, converting them to sitting ducks).

The MSM tells the sheeple what to think. Our MSM debases border patrol officers showing them shooting innocent refuges but they never want to show footage of Mexican Mafia operatives with tattooed faces who kill Americans. Most conversations among modern American sheeple are in favor of Mexican immigration, even here in Mississippi! They repeat the tired old MSM axiom "Illegals do the jobs Americans won't do." I always ask them how any of those jobs got done over the past 150 years. Then I point out that we can't tax illegals as they do the jobs Americans used to do. This makes liberals brains explode because they love taxation almost as much as they love balkanization of America, lol.

Cassie Smith— Thank you for reading my article. I appreciate your compliments and I fully agree with your comments.

I looked at your profile page and I am quite pleased to "meet" you. Your titles look fascinating. I will be coming by to read some of your Hubs soon. :)

Cassie Smith from U.S. on September 28, 2011:

It is maddening that employers hire illegal aliens and make it hard for law abiding business people to do business. In some places like Texas, California and New York you can't seem to avoid businesses that hire illegal aliens because it's endemic. Great hub.

Master Yoda— Thank you for both of your erudite comments. I looked through my article and I can't seem to find a statistic "1 to 5." Where is that in my article? Maybe I just don't see it. I do not believe any of my statistics are made up. Tell specifically which one you think is and I will provide the official source for the numbers.

Conservative Christians made America great and created this awesome civilization that is by light years the greatest ever seen on earth. Tell me what other people have made such a great civilization?

This country rightly encouraged immigration back when it was sparsely populated and BEFORE it had any social programs that steal property from some to give to others.

This country was NOT built on Separation of Church and State. Is that term in the Constitution? This country was built on "free expression of religion." Now THAT is in our Constitution.

If my kin is a dying human breed then the world will enter barbaric dark ages. You have better hope your prophecy is untrue.

It was Christians who built Western Civilization and it is that civilization that raised much of the world out of poverty, and to such an incredible standard of living that people a few hundred years ago would scarcely believe it if they could see it.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on June 29, 2011:

master Yoda— I should be banned from reproduction? And sweet, courteous, polite, gracious, civil, wise people like you should populate the world?

I am not holding back my country. If you think flooding America with tens of millions of illiterate, unskilled, ignorant people from the Third World will make America great then you are a complete imbecile. If that would make America great, then why aren't the countries they are coming from already great?

Learn something about history before you uncork such asinine opinions on others.

Master Yoda on June 29, 2011:

love how u make up statistics like ¨1 to 5¨and whatever other phony bullshit you inserted in your nonsensical post. conservatiove christians are the downfall of the country and christians muslims and jews are the downfall of humanity period. go take you homophobia islamophobia racism mexiphobia and go somewhere. this country was built on the idea of immigration and separation of church and state. your kin is a dying breed human kind is evolving past racism and religion gtfo!

Master Yoda on June 29, 2011:

from interracial chideren to immigrants, you are definitely a racist asshole. please castrate yourself, people like you should definitely be banned from reproduction on this planet. your the perfect example of what´s holding this country back from greatness.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on May 24, 2011:

francisid— I agree with you. It is a major problem. And all those opposed to open borders are branded as "heartless" and the ultimate slur of all time: "racist!" :)

francisid on May 23, 2011:

--and that is exactly the root which supports the tree of illegal immigrants.somebody is supporting them that is why they thrive.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on May 15, 2011:

francisid— I think that Democrats want the illegals legalized and open borders because they know uneducated, unskilled people from the third world will vote for socialism in massive numbers. And why not? "Vote for me and I will take care of you from cradle to grave with money confiscated from other people" always garners votes from those who view themselves as unable to compete.

Thank you for visiting and commenting! :)

silly me— Thank you for taking the time to read my Hub and to comment on it. I am glad you found it interesting. I fully understand your feelings, as a person who has immigrated to the United States the legal way. Welcome to the Hub Pages Community! I llok forward to reading your work.

francisid on May 13, 2011:

...that's the saddest point of all.there are a number of people who are willing to sweat it out just to be able to immigrate legally. Why would that be a problem to the rest?

silly me on May 10, 2011:

Very interesting hub. As an immigrant who had to work through a ton of paper work, get examined by a doctor, wait for several hours at the American Embassy, and of course pay a lot of money just to be able to get married to the love of my life (who happened to be an American), I feel somewhat cheated by the people who make their way to the States illegally.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on April 03, 2011:

francisid— Thank you for reading my article. I appreciate your comments. And I agree with you.

Parasitism is a strong word but somehow appropriate. The root cause, I would say, is a Mexico that doesn't know how to govern or produce success. And that is mired in third world levels of corruption. The US could help by ending the stupid "drug war."

The other part of the root cause is the bleeding heart liberals in America who are committed to provide for the whole world's needs if it bankrupts America or not, and if it creates dependents who are no longer free people or not.

francisid on April 01, 2011:

the solution is quite simple-- cut out the roots that support the tree.

with the illegal immigrants problem, pruning is no longer enough.what is needed is to identify what's behind the resurgence of the millions of people illegally bathing in the resources which are meant for legal settlers.sometimes,a bigger figure is behind that's why it overshadows the real cause.but as long as we haven't identified the root cause of these illegal immigrants,we'll forever be bathing in the lake of parasitism.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on March 12, 2011:

Gail Anthony— You are welcome. I appreciate your kind compliments. Thank you for taking the time to read my article and respond.

I was not aware that "millions" of illegal aliens come through our ports. I would have thought that customs & immigration would have checked this flow.

I agree that illegal aliens do not vote legally. But they do vote. Motor voter laws make it nearly impossible to check legal status.

I think you might be surprised who will vote for a demagogue promising free this and free that if elected. This has a powerful attraction for the poor, legal or not.

Your comments are excellent. Welcome to the Hub Pages Community!

Gail Anthony on March 09, 2011:

James, You wrote a detailed, interesting, and informative piece that I enjoyed but there are two items regarding your solution upon which I have to comment. Building a wall across our southern border would not stop the millions of illegal aliens that come in through Boston, New York, Baltimore, and Miami. These illegals are African, Hispanic, and African. 35 years working in my prior profession taught me that illegal aliens couldn't give a rat's fanny about Democrats or Republicans. If they have any children that are born in this country, those children might take a political position. However, no illegal alien votes legally.

Thanks for a good piece of writing.

James A Watkins (author) from Chicago on March 03, 2011:

tonymac04— You are welcome. Thank you for reading my work and leaving your comments.

A nation is: A people who share common customs, origins, history, and language; a nationality.

Are you in favor of a One World Government? Do you believe that any nation has a right to a border? Do you believe that any nation has a right to control who is within its borders?

The United States takes in a million legal immigrants a year. Are you saying that is not enough? Do you believe that all people on earth should be able to pick up and go live anywhere on earth they want, and immediately qualify for the largess of those states that have a huge welfare apparatus in place? Do you believe that all people have a RIGHT to the wealth and income of other people?

American taxpayers gave, through their government, $100 billion to the third world from 1950-1980 and yet most of the recipients found themselves in roughly the same shape at the end as they were in the beginning. This remains the biggest act of national generosity in human history by far.

The government also sent tens of thousands of techical experts to the third world to share its bounty of knowledge in industrial techniques, food production, railroad efficiency, modern mining, public health, and government administration. The work and charity done by American Missionaries around the world has been unprecedented in human history, at great danger to themselves and at tremendous cost. Private citizens in America give more to charity than any government.

The economic success stories have come without exception from countries that have embraced free enterprise: Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, India, and China.

You are right that political will is absent, but it is absent in the poor countries themselves. There is a direct correlation between property rights and lack of poverty, for instance. The Rule of Law is missing in the Third World, which is full of homegrown corruption.

Naturally, the defense budget of the United States is higher than say France or other NATO countries. We have been protected them for 60 years at our expense! And you can't go by the figures of Socialist regimes such as China because their information is secret while ours is public.

You make many good points, my friend. There is nothing I would rather see than all people on earth well fed, well housed, and well clothed. And well educated.

Tony McGregor from South Africa on February 28, 2011:

Leviticus 19: 33 & 34: "When an alien settles with you in your land, you shall not oppress him. He shall be treated as a native born among you, and you shall love him as a man like yourself, because you were aliens in Egypt."

James - you talk about "Hispanics" and "Americans" - Hispanics have as much right to be called "American" as any citizen of the US since they were born on the American continent of European anscestry, by the way. Which just shows how artificial "national" borders are.

There is actually a very simple answer to the "problem" of "illegal" aliens - if the world's richest countries would contribute hugely to the development and education of people in the poorer countries the "problem" would go away because better educated, housed and fed people don't need to go elsewhere and their fertility rates go down dramatically. They will stay at home.

The US is immensely rich and so acts as a magnet for those who are struggling. Quite normal. Every human being wants to make a better life for themselves and their families. To reduce the magnetic effect help improve the standard of living in the other countries.

The United Nations has a programme called the Millennium Development Goals which aims to do just that. If the US would invest say half of the approximately $850 billion it spends on defense in the development goals the defense spending would be made unnecessary.

The solution is simple and would not add to the tax burden of US citizens. But of course the political will is no doubt absent. Arms manufacturers make too much profit from their businesses to want to see peace prevail, and they control politics.

But really the answer is simple and relatively cheap - educate people. It has been found across all cultures and races in all countries - the better educated especially the women are, the lower the fertility rate. And the lower the fertility rate the more a society is able to succeed in all areas.

We have similar problems in South Africa although we are not nearly as rich as the US. We also struggle with these issues with far fewer resources to deal with them. And I sould say to our lawmakers too - export development and education to the countries from which people are flocking to South Africa. And indeed South Africa is participating in the NEPAD (New Programme for African Development) which was actually initiated by our former President Thabo Mbeki. It's a programme which faces many problems, not least of which is the lack of money that is endemic on the continent. But at least it is a start in the right direction. And most countries on the continent are working hard to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

Thanks for an interesting Hub.

Love and peace
