USA TODAY: Software tracks child porn traffickers online

If you come across child pornography on the internet DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT

So, the story is, I was contemplating what I would write my next hub page on. So, I hopped on Dogpile Search Spy, a tool that allows anyone to see what people are searching for on the Internet in real time.

I selected "unfiltered results" and I watched what people were searching for ...for five minutes there were 8-10 searches for Child pornography (which I will refer to as CP). Most of them contained brutally violent and sadistic terms which would rule out any defense that people were searching for CP for a school paper or because they wanted to find out what it is.

I was SO disgusted to see that ANYONE out there would be searching for this type of material, and I BECAME NEAUSATED when i realized that some of these people aren't just looking for naked pictures, they were looking for pictures that show child molestation, abuse, and battery.

Understandably, people who spend their time searching for this, and get pleasure out of such sick and twisted sites, content, and photos have some type of mental illness and need professional help. I have read about child molesters that like to "look" at CP so that they don't act. This rational is, COMPLETE BULLSHIT.

Any person under 18 should not be nude in a photograph ANYWHERE especially online. Never-mind getting abused, beaten, raped and tortured in photos and videos online. And if you come across such content you should not ADMIRE IT, GET TURNED ON BY IT, OR EVEN BE EMBARRASSED AND CLOSE THE WINDOW AND FORGET ABOUT IT. IF YOU COME ACROSS ANY TYPE OF CHILD PORN ON THE INTERNET YOU HAVE TO REPORT IT.

CP on the Internet has been in and out of the court systems. It is a topic that is always heated, but it is true that since this is so widespread on the Internet, its extremely hard to control. Websites and search engines are attempting to use strict search filters and not returning pornographic content. For example... if you Google " child porn" you will come up with results that are educational, news articles, lawsuits, information for victims etc. So, it seems like the search filters are HELPING, but it isn't perfect. For instance, any sicko who wants to get his fix of CP can play around with keywords and eventually he will get what he wants. For example " Preeteen naked pics".

Unfortunately, this disgusting problem is further complicated by social networking sites, forums, online groups, etc where any adult can enter any chat room, or become a "friend" or "fan" of someones page who is under 18. Any adult can pose as a fellow child. We've all seen news stories about adults praying on children online, kidnapping them, molesting them, murdering them, etc. While we all gasp in shock, we don't take the time out to consider what we as INDIVDUALS can do about it. The courts, and popular search engines can only do so much.

Instead of spending your time playing games online, bidding on ebay, chatting with your friends, why not take some time out and make a difference:

- If you come across CP REPORT IT right away with as much detailed information as possible. You can research ways to report CP, or I have included a link to the right of this a site where you can report CP online.

- Seek out CP. I'm not kidding, start mixing up keywords, report everything you find. Once you see the graphic nature of the CP that is out there, I have a hard time thinking you WOULDN'T report it.

-Keep an eye out in online groups or social bookmarking sites for CP. Report them to the site, and report them to a bigger site that will turn over CP reports to the authorities.

- If you come across CP related discussion in a chat room, take down their screen name. Call the police and let them know exactly what was said. Save the chat if you can.

- Educate and protect your children, or any children you know. Enforce tight restrictions on your child's Internet usage. Monitor them, even if you get some backlash and they INSIST nothing bad will happen to them, better safe than sorry.

-If your child is a member of social networking groups, make them give you their screen names and passwords. Keep an eye out for any racy photos they may post, or any older adults on their "friends" list. Read their messages. And no, your child isn't entitled to privacy when they live under your house, under your rules, and are surfing an Internet full of sexual predators.

Scroll to Continue

- Check your history often. Tell your child that if they delete the history or cache, they will be grounded and lose computer privileges.

- Invest in a keystrokes program. Monitor what your child is chatting/writing about online.

- Google your child's name, address, physical characteristic, any known screen names to make sure nothing sketchy is coming up in the search results.

- Keep your computer password protected. Only allow your child on for a certain amount of time per day. Do not let them use the internet late at night.

- Get your childs screen name and passwords for any and all messaging programs and chat rooms.

- Go to counseling to keep communication open with your child. If your child feels like they can't talk to you, chances are, you won't know if they are being preyed on by adults.

- Monitor your childs phone calls.

-Make them give you numbers of any friends houses they visit. Call and check up on them. Drop them off yourself, so that you know they are really going there.

- Have someone check on your child if they stay home alone while you are at work.

- Keep in mind that some sexual predators do NOT hide the fact that they are adults in chats and so forth. They will let your child know they are adults and use tactics like "you can trust me", "you can talk to me", "I'll take care of you", etc, etc.

- Don't take any chances. I know you can "trus" your child, but you never know. if you aren't sure what type of creeps are out there, make up a screen name, something along the effects of "babygirl14" and go into teen chat sites. Dont interact with other people. Sooner or later YOU WILL get approached by an adult. Then you will see exactly what goes on when your children are online.

No adult has any right to molest, beat, harm, violate, batter, etc etc ANY CHILD, children are the next generation, we should admire and value their innocence and do our part to show them the world has good in it. Don't let sexual predators take away a childs innocence and display this cruel reality online for the world to see.

If uncle Sam can catch terrorists over a phone call or find Saddam Hussein hiding in a rabbit hole theres something wrong here. Our society will catch and punish citizens for abusing the music industry "Napster" But no effort here!! I thought CP was hidden in the deep web. Hidden my butt. Ive stumbled across a few riske photos of young girls. Mostly nn but some nudes. Nothing to crazy. With 1 click the curtain came down. I was not prepared for what was stumbled upon. My children's mother and i had a conversation about what was witnessed. Phuk the Russians. A 11-12yr old girl fully naked was dancing for camera. Ive been around the block a time or 2 and seen a lot. Enough to know when someone is higher than a kite. Thats right. SOB's had her on speed of some sort. And now after doing some research and reading post after post its obvious its outta control over there. I cried. Tears are falling now as i type. I just wanna get on a plane, fly over there and phukin kill whoever was behind that camera. I would kill to protect my children and it hurts to know she and many like her have no protection. In fact their protectors are the ones who need a bullet. If the 30 secs i witnessed have damaged me, how can he live with himself? She was beautiful. What i saw was purely ugly and evil!! I wish him and his kind a slow painful cancer death.......

BIgg D. R. on September 16, 2016:

The Bottom-Line: HOW can we, the individual, truly help to stop this?

We, my fiancée and myself, are also nudists. And we're disgusted that people are using "nudism" as some sexual type-of-link to kids that are nude. We realize that within the proper context some photos are not illegal... however, we ALL still need to be fully aware of what other people's motives are and in what context they are viewing others in the nude? We also don't wish to encourage a "big-brother" state, but we all MUST report such images online and "try" to find out the source of them all and especially WORK together to Stop them... somehow. Genomic-Imprinting and Epigenetics testing MAY help us to stop this in advance.

I am making it my personal mission to find these sick pos and either kill them or make there life unbearable. I am refusing to let these pos use our children for toys. I don't know why Americans would tolerate these pos in our society. We don't let animals be abused. Perhaps we should just take matters in to our own hands when it comes to protecting our kids. I have a few ideas about justice for these sick son-of -bitches

I have spend the last year or so, searching the web, going places I was surprised I was able to get into. What is going is on these websites is relayed to the times we are in. If the gov really wanted to stop the prono they could, there are laws that protect some of the fringe groups and their produce, and there are pay offs to elected officials which ask for specific laws not to get passed, I could go on. Also there is the freedom of information act which can get very blurry and complex. Satan is a live and well on planet Earth, and it is his time. R

Just me on April 22, 2014:

And I do think the teenagers need to be educated too about internet exploitation of anyone from birth to 18. Teenagers need to also scream stranger danger and teenagers are the ones that can help adults since they know social sites, they can be told it's NOT normal to take nude photos or videos and we can as adults explain why it's wrong for someone to do that. Facebook advertisements on the sides are the same inappropriate maybe we should complain to Facebook about their advertisements. We should complain to broadband companies and write to a member of parliament so they can give the go ahead to the opt in option for adult content. This is a better idea to keep our children safe from certain dark side of the internet world.

Just me on April 22, 2014:

I have read and studied child abuse for a long time. The conclusion was the following as normal citizens the only way to help children is not to watch ADULT porn since the adult porn industry is directly the cause of child porn. This is how child porn is advertised. When you see a suspicious person around kids make a big deal of it because most likely they are pimps trying to kidnap a child. I saw one of these bastards in a park and made a big deal with other parents. Boycott anything that anyone thinks directly puts children in the eye of perverts and complain to the magazine company, tv company and website. It shouldn't go so far that these kids end up on the screens. Anything helps because they have no one else to help them. Most importantly tell the children that there are some nasty people out there that are disgusting and want to hurt children. Pass the word around to friends and family we have the power of social networking sites to exploit these people.

Dan on March 12, 2013:

I agree in totality that girls under 18 should not be exploited, nor exploit themselves in a pornographic way.My conscience is now littered with guilt when i think that looking for/at 18 and 19 y/o girls sites may lead to underage pictures or vids.As i previously stated i always type in over 18 in any search for porn, however i know that words such as "Girl"{as in Girls gone wild videos, that you can find in any local video store}or teen, does lead you to some disgusting sites that i never look at.I don't need to justify a desire to view legal aged sites{Dr Oz has said on his daytime tv show that it is important to "exercise your prostate"} but i think i need to be more careful as one click and you just don't know if the person is genuinely over 18.

On the subject of dobbing in sites that clearly state underage girls. This is the first computer i have ever had in my life and i struggle to understand all of it's workings yet,but i genuinely feel that i should be morally compelled to" bookmark?"the link that is provided and write down the filthy sites if/when i see them."YES I WILL!"WIll YOU?

Dcorey on March 05, 2013:

These sites should be BANNED PEROID!!! I am sick of all the people that say its their freedom to view whatever they want....What about the CHILDREN INVOLVED!!!!! MAKES ME SICK!!!!!!!!

Dan on March 02, 2013:

I have recently bought my first ever computer.I have always enjoyed watching porn on videos of woman generally 18 to 30, but since viewing on the net i find that even though i always type in, for instance, over 18 naked girls vids or 18 plus nude woman, you can still end up at sites that have what appears to be under 18 girls.Clicking on sites that say teen should only have over 18 girls. It is worrying.I am not at all attracted to children and i am quite sure of the laws on this topic. I have talked to my doctor regarding enjoying viewing younger 18,19,20 year olds and he says that it's quite normal.

There should be more sites out there promoting the stop of violence against children ,,, I don't get this we have so many useless commercials on tv but hardly anything that involvs helping children stay protected against predators. We should all think because if we see a lot of useful stuff in all types of media then the predators will think twice about harming children. We should not wait for something bad to happen which is the case most of the time, we all should act now.... In this matter time is a tick bomb,,

These people that are using search engines to find this stuff are investigates and people that are not "IN" yet. These people are every were there is a chance you know some one that looks at it. Another thing is your kids might be looking for the same content you are against. Believe it or not there are some kids that just want to do that they don't even need to be forced. These who look at this stuff is not always adults. So my question for you is what if you check your kids history and find that he is looking for the stuff? Do you get him help? or do you Report him?

at each of these sites you can report CP. However, just a note, it's not the best idea to actively search out CP to report. This could place you in a position to be charged with accessing CP. If you come across a link or file, report them at these links. You can also report other incidents of child sexual abuse or suspected child sexual abuse here. Reports to Cybertip have resulted in over 56 arrests and over 22 children being removed from abusive environments (in Canada). They have a full report on how they work and what they do on their website.

I agree and I do; I've been seeking out and reporting this bull shit for a few years; every since I stumbled on to how sick some of these freaks are. I've turned in literally hundreds of sites and it does work.

Thanks for your report.

We are looking forward for you to help us in our mission against CHILD PORNOGRAPHY. If you can still access the site its not yet blocked. Children are being forced to do XXX Pornography pictures and images. Most of these children and adult don’t have any legal contranct and documentation. Therefore they end up exploited. Check the following links below:

its your choice, check the site account and be a judged to yourself to blocked it.

Thanks and Godbless!

Thank you for you for you thorough and thought-provoking hub, Lady Luck. The small victims of this abuse need us to stand up and be their voice. Thank you for shedding light on a terrible issue that demands much more of our attention. Child pornography has been a source of hreatbreak for me for several years after seeing a night news special on a specific boy's story. I've always wanted to be part of fighting back, but didn't know what I could personally do. Thank you for your help.

i was reading on yahoo, about some kind of exotic elephant, so i did a yahoo search for exotic elephants, and this list of sites came up, one said " Free Fu**ing Movies" so i clicked on it. On its home page, ( no need to watch any videos) it had pic after pic of women w/ animals, and some of them looked like little girls not even 16 and some didn't even look like they wanted to be doing those things. I didn't know how to report it, Ive been searching for over 45 min. on someplace I can report it and this is as close as Ive gotten, if this will even post after I type it all out. But if someone who knows a little more about this can just check it out. Just do a yahoo search for " Exotic Elephants" it should pop up for you, sorry I didn't want to stay on it, and didn't think to get the site name.

snarlmkiv on October 10, 2008:

as much as we want to stop child pornography, those that cater to this industries are breeding like cockroaches, crawling from every crevice and crack in the net. stopping one does make a difference but it takes one big action to put a big cork on this sick industry. if a bill, similar to this one is passed (and after making it sensible), it should definitely be a big blow to the porn industry as a whole.

Stupid on September 05, 2008:

I had turned a blind eye once and regret it ever since. I was afraid that I'd be investigated if I reported CP but now I know I should have reported it anyway.

it has been affecting the way how teenagers even the enfants think.and i as a teen think its time to for it to be stopped because we still have live to live free from all this corruptive business

is it illegal for someone to have it on a work computer... private business... i was working with someone and he had it on his computer, can you turn them in and where.

RFox on May 10, 2008:

This is important information. Especially the part about reporting it. So many people when surfing the net don't think to report the stuff they come across. Excellent hub.

I do agree with Jenny (InspirePub) regarding her comments.

It's great to see people fighting for children.

crashcromwell from Florida on May 03, 2008:

Boy, you've really touched on something here. It shouldn't be a surprise, though. I get the same kind of feeling when I see the Catch a Predator shows on Dateline NBC. You're right that these people are mentally ill, but that alone does not absolve anyone from guilt. All it does is sends up a red flag that people need help. Thank you for tackling this difficult subject. I'm glad to join your fan club!

And i think the governments too must actively participate in curbing such nasty deeds and take it up as their responsibility.

Very good hub. The more people aware of the problem, the better. As a mother I feel that there are never enough precautions and care with your children. Communication and education are the key.

this is very shocking and must not taken for granted. Children is our future, what happens in the world if they're abused at a young age.

This is a great Hub, and these are very valid points.

However, I should point out that most kids who are sexually abused are NOT abused by strangers. The vast majority are abused by a relative, with second place going to an adult in a position of trust, such as a scout leader, church leader, or teacher.

The best way to protect your kids is to raise them with the experience and the belief that they can say "STOP" and any adult will immediately stop what they are doing to the child.

Invading their privacy as suggested in this Hub can be problematic, because you are teaching them that they are not allowed to have boundaries. Predators feed on kids who haven't learned to set boundaries on their own privacy, by asking intimate questions and so on.

It would be safer for the kids to negotiate with them about it rather than just imposing it. Explain the problem, show them examples of the sorts of conversations predators have with kids, and then get their agreement that they will only chat online with people they have met in real life, or something similar.

This is a timely warning, though, and very useful links!

Bonnie Ramsey from United States on April 20, 2008:

Great Hub! I think this is something that while many of us are aware of, it is so sickening that we tend to turn away from it because we just can't phathom the thought of this happening to any child. Thanks for giving information on what to do about it when we find this type of thing. I haven't ran across any Cp sites but have ran into enough porn to last a liftime. It is really sad what our society is considering acceptable these days.

RUTHIE17 on April 20, 2008:

You are so right that the sick c_ _p on the internet must be stopped!  And not just on the internet but TV, movies, video games and adult comics and magazines.

Our children shouldn't have to be afraid but that is exactly what has happened.  We taught our 3 year old grandson to be watchful of people-men, women and big kids- and to yell "STRANGER DANGER!" if someone tries to touch him or grab him.   Now  that he's 4 1/2 we're looking into self-defense classes. We're afraid for him and afraid of what could happen to him.

Where did the innocence of childhood go?
