The Challenge

Inspired by a fellow co-writer-

The question:

Do you believe that America is the greatest country? Why or why not?

My answer "yes" and as for the "why"...how much time do you have?

How much time do you have for me to explain just how much I love the United States of America?

I have memories and goose bump moments which go back to my childhood; singing patriotic songs in school; both in the classroom and in choir in front of family, friends and complete strangers.

The county fair excitement of local and National elections from my childhood, have stayed with me, throughout my life.

In fact, the excitement of the first election I can remember, I was only five or six years old and it was the Goldwater-Johnson Presidential race. I’m always surprised by the many details which have always stayed with me.

Genuine excitement and joy was my experience...I loved the electricity of it all!

I have memories of attending Independence Day Parades.

Some refer to them as 4th of July Parades; that’s fine, that is the official date, however, what we are celebrating isn’t the date, but rather the fact that we gained our Independence from an overbearing foreign ruling class.

All aspects of our life were controlled from afar by a tyrannical king and we finally said, nope, I don't think so!

~~~
Several years later as a high school student, I had the great honor of being a part of the Bicentennial Parades which took place at Walt Disney World Orlando in 1976.
I had the greater honor of portraying one of our Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin, on my (his) very own float.
The closest float to me was the Betsy Ross float, we were surrounded by Minutemen, the Liberty Bell float was also close by, it was simply amazing!
Goose bumps again!
Is that me? Maybe.
Is that me? Maybe.
Betsy Ross working on our flag - (note: she got to sit the entire parade, I, Benjamin Franklin, on the other hand, did not) Not complaining, it was such an honor.
Other celebrations were taking place, all across America. Parade of Sail - New York - July 4th 1976
Bursting with Pride
Present day, an example of my pride in this Country, comes from Rush Limbaugh's radio show.
Make that...
Rush Limbaugh's audience!
His audience has stepped up and purchased Betsy Ross t-shirts, which has raised millions of dollars. (yes, Betsy Ross, where do you think the idea came from?) That's all I am going to say about that, other than to say, I love how you think, Rush!
All profits from the sale of items utilizing the Betsy Ross flag, go to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which honors our military and first responders.
The money raised from the sale of t-shirts, jackets, etc., through Rush's radio program and website, has already built several homes for Gold Star Families. Those military families that have made great sacrifices; be it life or limb, for this Country!
Tunnel to Towers was started by brother of firefighter Stephen Siller, Stephen was last seen running through the tunnels of New York to the towers, ready to lay down his life to save people during the horrific attack on our homeland, if that's what it took, and sadly, it was!
My God, the sacrifices made that fateful day...made, throughout our existence...to save as many lives as humanly possible, from evil dictators, group think and ugly ideologies...
I believe American spirit and American sacrifice is unprecedented!
~~~

Studying history and the many sacrifices made, in order for so many to live free; not under a king, not under tyranny, not as slaves, should give Americans goose bumps every day they have the privilege to wake up in this exceptional Country!

I know it does me and I know it does the many people in my life, whether they were born here or worked to get here legally, in order to become United States citizens!

Welcoming our Heroes Home Properly

Honoring Sacrifice

On the National day of recognition of our law enforcement officers, January 9, Frank Siller, founder of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, announced that they will be paying off the mortgages of the family home of all officers killed in the line of duty!

It's not enough to look out for the exceptionally brave fighting men and women of our military

It's not enough to look out for our exceptional first responders...now this foundation will do the same for the many brave men and women of Law Enforcement

That in itself is something, but knowing, without a doubt, that the amazing citizens of this Country; our Country, the United States of America, will provide the means, they will make it happen, with their support and through their donations, deepens my already overflowing pride!

God Bless the U.S.A.

In conclusion

When it was suggested that I turn my response from a topics forum, into an article (hub), unfortunately, my first thought was that if I didn't point out our imperfections, others, who do not typically have anything good to say about this Country, instantly honored to tear her down, would do it for me.

As proud as I am, of course I realize that we've made many mistakes since our founding. I believe we've always worked to correct them and that's what matters in the end.

We, as any other group of people, as any Country, fall short from exemplifying the perfect example, Jesus Christ, although, we have less of an excuse, we were founded as a Christian nation.

I believe the goodness of America and her people far surpasses the ugliness of the evil one.

I can't explain America any further or any better than my favorite President, the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Wilson Reagan.

So President Reagan, I give you the honor, take it home Sir....

We ARE the shining city on the hill

Sharing this one again...

Because of where we are in this Nation today; so much hate, so many haters working to destroy this Country that we know and love!

Because we aren't promised tomorrow.

Because I've mentioned Rush in this one and because I am feeling both unsettled and sentimental today!

I mentioned Rush Limbaugh in this article, because he is one of the things I love about America. I started listening to him 30 years ago, when my husband came home and said, “there is this guy on the radio, Rush, you have to listen to him. He thinks like we think, sees this Country as we see it and isn’t afraid to say it like he sees it.”

I tuned in and have been tuning in ever since.

Through his radio show and the sale of Betsy Ross T shirts, homes are being built for Gold Star families and it was recently announced that money from sales will also be going to families of fallen Police Officers to pay off their home mortgages.

He has also been doing a telethon on his radio show for most of the 30+ years. The telethon is in support of blood cancers cures, such as leukemia. It has raised a lot of money and awareness.

My kids are Rush babies.

I get very upset when people dis Rush, without ever having listened to him or without knowing anything about him.

He is conservative and some people seem to think that gives them license to glom on and attack.

He talks politics, news/events of the day. He is very relatable, with a great sense of humor. He has had me laugh crying more than once over the years.

He is the best!

He announced on his show yesterday that he has advanced lung cancer. I know he will fight it with all he has and he is in my prayers!

Thank you Grace and thank you for inspiring me to write it.

I don't know when it was decided that we are not to take pride in our country and why so many feel obligated to constantly focus on the negatives (which all countries must contend with!)

As Mike stated in response to your initial question, "everyone should believe THEIR country is the greatest country in the world."

Love and pride in one's country is (or should be) innate, it is not by design to take away from any other country. Every country should strive for excellence.

I feel for the Australian people right now, as they face such horrific fires. Seeing them in the airport welcoming U.S. firefighters, is an example of their love for their country. They appreciate us being there, because they love their country so much....

Guess I am going on and on. Have a great weekend Grace.

Wow, this hub has brought me to tears. This hub is a beautiful synopsis of America, our great nation. Thank you for writing it.

Amen!!!

And general kindness even while disagreeing, I think.

Shannon Henry from Texas on January 09, 2020:

I'm not sure how it went to that. Other than that's the kind of attitude that we need less of. We need more patriotism and unity from both sides!

A B Williams (author) from Central Florida on January 09, 2020:

*too big.

A B Williams (author) from Central Florida on January 09, 2020:

You are making perfect sense!

Yes, it’s not just Dems saying they are going to move to another Country, I hear many say it. Many people are abandoning political parties, they are so frustrated with our National debt and spending. Although Republicans don’t spend like Dems, they have their pet projects too and they know how to spend! When Government gets to big, it’s no longer effective, no longer serving it’s purpose.

A smaller, fine-tuned Government, is the best Government.

How did I get on that...?

Shannon Henry from Texas on January 09, 2020:

Well, sure. I get his frustration, too. And obviously, he's not a Democrat. However, he was talking to a Democratic woman. Of course, she didn't go in-depth with him or even bother trying to share her thoughts on the matter since he is a customer, but he pretty much accused her of thinking everything is free or should be free. Trust me, she is not one to think that or to expect it. I guess my problem is that it's one thing to take a stand and believe in it fully. I just wish people would be more careful about choosing their words and more to the point, when and where they voice these strong opinions. Some people are, as we said, rude and bashing each other and America and other people are just offended about being lumped in with overall stereotypes or images brought on by extremists. Although there was no name-calling or heated discussion between this woman and the man, it still offended her because she vented about it afterward.

I guess maybe I make sense to you. Maybe I don't. It's not the political discussions that bother me, though; it's all the rudeness people throw around when talking about it.

A B Williams (author) from Central Florida on January 09, 2020:

Awww...the old, "I'm going to move to another Country....."

But, they never do, because they know there's no place better.

What we need, as Reagan so eloquently expresses, is a return of Civics into all of our school classrooms, families meeting around the dinner table once again, communicating about their day, their concerns, etc. We definitely need to bring God back into our homes and I'd love to see a return of patriotism, spreading and working its magic across the land, producing a whole new crop of America lovers!

You're right, there has been too much bashing, I get the back of forth dueling of our political parties, that has existed since our beginning, but things have changed! One party is no longer saying, we can do better for this Country, they are working to change/undo this Country. The bashing of this Country, I cannot tolerate! I don't mean to get into politics, any one who reads me, knows where I stand.

Suffice to say, I get the man's frustration!

Thanks for commenting Shannon. Always appreciated!

Shannon Henry from Texas on January 09, 2020:

Angie, I wish there were more people with your attitude. Today at work, I had to listen to a man complain about the country and the Democrats. He said he wished he could just move to a different country. We're all supposed to be One Nation Under God. I'm tired of hearing both sides bash just to share their opinions.
