Are these foods a threat?

Scientists working with genetically engineered foods warn that genetically mutated foods in general might have serious side effects on humans. Genetically mutated soybeans can have numerous, bad health effects. There are also health effects on children who eat genetically mutated corn. Children are more susceptible to problems with genetically mutated milk.

Effects on Health

Genetically mutated soybeans can have numerous, bad health effects. When a new gene is introduced in a plant it risks being passed on to human genes and into our “gut bacteria” which can remain inside us and if the gene is toxic or allergenic it may affect us in the long run. This could create an overproduction of allergens, toxins, carcinogens (cancer inducing agents), or antinutrients which are natural or synthetic compounds that interfere with the absorption of nutrients. Kids have digestive systems of smaller capacity than adults and therefore more genetically mutated genes will survive in their DNA which can seriously affect them. Genetically mutated soybeans can have numerous, bad health effects.

There are also health effects on children who eat genetically mutated corn. When we genetically mutated corn, we made it that it would create its own pesticide and be resistant to diseases. If children eat this corn, the gene can be transferred into their gut bacteria and transform their intestinal flora, which are microorganisms that live in the digestive tracts, into “pesticide factories” which would produce the harmful pesticides inside the body forever. 39 Philippinos who lived next to a corn that was genetically mutated developed skin, intestinal, and respiratory reactions. The FDA declared this as “A serious health hazard.” The blood showed an immune response to the pesticide, which meant that while the pesticide was harming the body; the immune system was not “recognizing” it as a threat. In addition to the foods that are genetically modified. Children are more susceptible to problems with genetically modified milk. Much of the milk on the markets is genetically modified Dairy products that are treated with an engineered growth hormone contain an increased amount of the hormone IGF-1, which surely causes breast and prostate cancer. If this hormone is absorbed from milk into infants (and even adults) can produce “hormonal and allergic effects” and induce premature growth and breast stimulation in infants and possibly more breast cancer in adults. In addition the cattle that is fed “rbGH” can develop “steroids and adrenaline type stressor chemicals” these in turn contaminate milk and are harmful to infants and young children.

More and more companies now OWN the seeds that they modify, and they sell to other companies and local stores.

Glad to see you found this helpful. I highly recommend watching Food Inc. for more information.

THIS WAS REALLY HELPFUL ESPECIALLY THE PICTURE OF THE TOMATO

good reading. I once listened to a hearing in CA about why they didn't want to label the GM foods. The lady said it may alarm the public.. so they just keep feeding the sheep! Food Inc. is just one of the informative documentaries to learn more. Also any of Michael Pollan's books, Environmental Working Group.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on May 02, 2010:

Very interesting hub but I thing they should label the food accordingly. I don't particularly like the idea of genetically engineered food but it may be the wave of the future.

I have never heard of Penn & Teller, but I'm sure youtube won't fail me, haha.

CaribeM on May 02, 2010:

Still haven't watch that documentary, but I will. Thanks for your prompt answer. I guess we all are [beep] about this for now. We probably will be better growing our own food. Have you seen Penn & Teller episode about organic food?

Lali Writes (author) on May 02, 2010:

If you watch the movie Food, Inc. that question is addressed. But in short, they DO NOT. Food companies are not required to label a food as a GMO. And you can not distinguish them from regular foods, since they usually can look the same. Your best bet, is to go organic.

Thanks for posting a very helpful hub. Just two questions about this: Do the FDA mandate that genetically engineered foods be labeled on markets? If not, how can they be distinguished from naturally grown food?
