Foreign Terrorists Across the American Border

Even as a moderate liberal who votes mostly Democratic (but I have voted for Republicans like Trump), I am concerned and have always been about foreign terrorists crossing the US-Mexico border along with the other hoards trying to get in. It was bad with Trump and now far worse with Biden and his poor handling of it. Fact is, no POTUS has handled it very well for decades because it is both a political and humanitarian issue full of critique. There is NO good answer.

That said, according to Politifact, the Justice Department and DHS said that officials encountered 2,554 individuals on the terrorist watchlist who were attempting to enter the country in fiscal year 2017. In 2019, the same agencies stated 3700. In the same data, it reported that there remains no evidence that terrorist groups in Mexico or Latin America have created bases there or that drug cartels are working with them to infiltrate terrorists into the USA. According to a recent Border Patrol report, BP encountered 41 people on the terrorist watchlist , 35 were U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, and six were foreigners. Since October 2020, four people on the Terror Watchlist were caught.

As one CBP agent said, there are Senate reports about the terrorists trying to get across the border. The public reports are vague and contain little data, while the confidential reports cited by some Republican Senators contain far more hard data to support the arguments that is happening with more frequency.

It has always been rather clear to me that if I was a terrorist, getting through the US southern border would be easy, but lets not forget the vast areas along the northern border either with Canada. Of course, once across, what do you do then? Are they just suicide bomber types? Are they trying to establish a terrorist cell? With the numbers getting across being so small, the difficulties surviving and planning an attack, make it all seem unlikely.

Of course, terrorism comes in many forms. Simply attack the energy grid to a town or city, or, its main water supply, would be a real terror attack and easy to do, since most are unprotected. Starting forest fires in multiple areas causes quite a bit of chaos. Placing snipers along a busy highway corridor would do the same. These are the types of terrorism just a few could do, so catching them is important.

Perrya, your contention is an attempt to evade answers to a difficult question. Can you explain why though all Muslims are not terrorists why 98% of the terrorists arrested profess the Muslim faith. Or it is just a coincidence?

Ara Vahanian from LOS ANGELES on April 11, 2021:

I don't think we need to worry about foreign terrorists coming from the southern border. What we do have to focus on is doing something about these border crossings which as you have stated there is no easy answer. That's why proper immigration reform is a must. How does the US reform the system? Will President Biden get bipartisan support? These are two critical questions to consider.

A terrorist is simply anyone of any religion sent to kill civilians for an reason, they just happen to be mostly from the fringe Islam faith, like ISIS.

MG Singh from UAE on April 07, 2021:

You have not specified who the terrorists are. What religion they profess and whether the majority follow Islam or have some connection with ISIS. My information is that many ISIS operatives are trying to infiltrate into the United States to avenge the death of their leader.
