Historians Estimate 40% of Colonists Wanted Revolution, 60% Were Loyal to the Crown or Neutral, Some Things Never Change

Another passion of mine, is learning about and from History. It saddens me that so much is being forgotten or revised.

Is America's Fighting Spirit gone forever?

Will Americans always Fight for Liberty?

I have been thinking a lot lately about America's earliest days, leading up to, during and after Revolution.

Our numbers were not very large at that time and I'd like to think...wouldn't you... that all wanted Independence from Great Britain?

That was not the case!

Historians estimate that about 40% wanted Revolution, the other 60% remained loyal to the Crown or wished to remain neutral.

Hmm.....'Neutral'. Apolitical.

Comfortably and confidently hanging the gray...

These things I ponder!

How is the gray?

I've never been a fan of the color nor am I a fan of fence riding.

But, nonetheless, and even so, that small 40% with over-the-top percentages of Fight, Faith and Fortitude, saw it through!

I am so grateful they did!

Today, we seem so willing to throw away, all that was gained by our brave and patriotic predecessors, all those years ago.

Americans Fighting Spirit, seems lacking and the two seem to no longer go hand-in-hand:

  • Some have grown weary, they're not giving up, they are just tired and need rest now. They are counting on the next generation to carry the torch.
  • Some have been knocked down, fined, chastised, many times, they've given up, they're done!
  • Far too many feel perfectly comfortable and safe, there in the their neutral zone.
  • For far too many Americans, sadly, they've never had a fighting spirit, innately, learned or otherwise! They are indifferent.

As before, a small percentage fights on; the Tea Party and other Constitutionally conservative groups, Veteran groups, a few attentive Congress men and women, but the numbers pale in comparison to the numbers that wish to remain neutrally tucked away, hiding out in their perfect shade of smoky gray or those willing to lay down their Freedom at the altar of Big Government.

The six most important words in the English vocabulary, for far too many these days, "What is in it for me"?

Scroll to Continue

They do not understand the roots and tentacles of Tyranny -

They understand, "What's in it for me?"

They do not understand the Revolution or the never-ending fight for freedom, they understand their creed and their creed alone...

Yep, you got it..

"What is in it for me?"

It is discouraging, when you come to the realization that everything is changing and it is not the kind of change that we saw during the forging of this Great Nation, the opposite is true; selfish, thoughtless and destructive change that continually chips away at our foundation.

The chipping away, political correctness change experienced within the past few years, has been so devastating and so over the top, leaves one wondering if we can ever get back to some semblance of normalcy.

I predict that within the next decade, (unless there is an awakening) the topic of conversation will be "What happened to America"?

There will be discussions of the how and the why and the what for?

There will be discussions about the generation that let everyone down and destroyed such a good thing!

Our grandchildren, great-grandchildren will have a hard time accepting, "Well we were so busy trying to live up to the expectations of the politically correct crowd that we lost our heads, we lost sight and then, we just lost our way."

Can't you just see their expressions now, as you think about it?

Having a vision are you?

"We did not see it coming" will fall upon deaf ears, because we not only ignored subtle warnings, we ignored flashing neon signs!

I guess there is another excuse left, "We had the poorest eyesight."

In all seriousness, there are multiple flashing neon signs that cannot be continually ignored, starting with public Education:

The importance of the U.S. Constitution minimized with each new printed text.

  • It is more important to keep a child confused in all areas, including their gender identity and seeing to it that they're happily in the restroom of their choosing.

Historic events swept aside, revised or omitted altogether.

  • More important to scare the children into believing that they're destroying planet earth by their mere existence.

The Pledge of Allegiance, Independence Day parades and patriotic activity done away with.

  • Better to do away with 'mainstays' than to have someone from another Country, feel offended and therefore....uncomfortable with the concept of Patriotism.

Prayer and moments of silence now seen as divisive and offensive.

  • Much more important that we heap continuous praise on mediocre behavior and performance.

Our Children and Grandchildren are looking to us

If it were not for my Faith and my belief system...

If it were not for me having more than my fair share (it's true, you'll have to ask God about that one politically correct crowd, I had absolutely nothing to do with the divvying process) of Patriotism and Fighting Spirit...

I would have given up long ago.

We can't give up, we have to pull up our boot straps and keep fighting.

I don't want to tell my grandchildren that I was trying to be sensitive to the needs of the politically correct crowd.

I am having my own visions now......their eyes are glazed over and their little faces in bewilderment, at this point.

I don't want to be so blind that I cannot see flashing neon!

The Fight goes on, it doesn't end.

It can't end!

Our children and grandchildren are looking to us.

Future generations are counting on us!

You're welcome.

Agreed Robert.

Thank you for your comments, bringing this one out of the mothballs! :)

You've triggered a couple of ideas for future hubs.

Robert Sacchi on September 24, 2018:

Thank you. Yes, many people seem willing to sell freedoms at bargain basement prices. The sad part is they would probably sell them for even less.

Angie B Williams (author) from Central Florida, USA on September 23, 2018:

Prepare to blush a little more Robert, because T is right, I did not give you enough credit for this very insightful commentary.

When I was researching for this article, I questioned, checked and checked again on the percentages offered, I so wanted those percentages to be wrong....that roughly 40% (or higher) fought so courageously for what we are so easily willing to give away a little more of each day and for what ‘some’ are actively working to undo.

Robert Sacchi on September 23, 2018:

T and AB you are both very kind. I'm blushing.

The Logician from then to now on on September 23, 2018:

AB, darn right they are good questions and when do we ever see anyone question estimates (like polls).

There is always a hidden story or point of view not expressed and ignored for preconceived reasons.

Sacchi gives us the opposite of liberal reasoning (academia are predominantly liberal) and you can bet when estimates like these are given without answering the questions Robert asked which get to the bottom of what it means instead of just putting an impression out there they are liberal historians.

I wish there were hundreds more Robert Sacchis here on hub pages!

That’s not meant to be any sort of criticism of you or your article AB, I understand your focus.

My focus is always healthy skepticism aimed at revealing the truth. Thank you for this article and thank heaven for Robert Sacchis.

Great questions all. This one is an oldie. I need to do a follow-up, focusing exclusively on the rebellion.

I was focusing more on my dismay with those that do not take a stand on anything, certainly not on things which matter and affect us all (in the U.S.) as we attempt to hold on to this Republic. Such as when our Government mandated we purchase insurance....or else...and over half of this Nation said oh okay whatever!

They just exist, thinking they do not have a say, waiting to be told how to think, how to act, waiting to be know zombies. ;)

I’m fine with them staying home, until they can get a clue!

Robert Sacchi on September 23, 2018:

This article gives a lot to think about. The historians, assuming they aren't just having fun with numbers, give a picture that is at best incomplete. The fact 40% of the colonists were willing to support armed rebellion is amazing. The 60% against rebellion or neutral leaves a large blind spot. What percentage were willing to take up arms in support of the crown? What percentage didn't support the rebellion not out of principal but because they believe the cause hopeless? To put it in modern day terms if 40% of the population votes for independence and 40% stay home on election day the independence vote wins by a landslide. Thank you for posting.

Thanks Jackie. Amen!!

I certainly agree. It has to happen soon while there is still a chance. I hope many who do not want America gone will stand and be counted.

Sharing everywhere.
