What is the Water Crisis?

Water crisis is increasing as global temperatures rise with a reduced amount of rainfall and snow that results in less water run-off. Over the past twenty years lakes, rivers, and streams have reduced dramatically leaving tell tale signs referred to as the "bath tub ring"). Some streams and small lakes have completely dried up, while larger ones continually shrink away effecting water supplies for cities, farmers, and industry.

Global temperatures are not the only culprit. Civilization demands that increase every year on crops, and products requires much more water usage in processing plants, agriculture, and even landscaping.

As of October 2021, many places in the world are experiencing a water crisis, including the South West United States. Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, and parts of Mexico below Arizona and New Mexico are seeing cut backs in water usage. Lake Powell, Utah, and Lake Mead, Nevada are examples of water crisis.

Lake Mead is a man-made lake on the Colorado River, near Las Vegas, Nevada, and Arizona, the largest reservoir in the United States in terms of water capacity. Formed by the Hoover Dam on September 30, 1935, it serves 9 western states in terms of human use, hydropower, and agriculture. "Six feet of water loss equals 300 billion gallons of water", according to (10/07/2021). According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Integrated Drought Information System, an estimated 81 million are experiencing the impacts of this year's drought.

Water Restrictions Imposed

In August 2021, the Federal Government issued the first water shortage on the lower Colorado River. According to KUNC, In the last five years, Lake Powell and Lake Mead have lost 22% of their capacity. (Alex Hager, August 16, 2021).

Mandatory cutbacks include 7% in Nevada, 18% in Arizona, while California follows suit with voluntary cut backs hoping for a 15% reduction in water usage. Lake Oroville in California looks much like Lake Powell and Lake Mead with a large "bath tub ring" showing evidence of water loss in the past 5 years.

If the water sources continue to dry up, the restrictions will increase, eventually get down to water consumption by each individual.

It is worth while to seek out sources of water production, and storage. I personally have two fifty gallon water barrels, and a pool, along with a Berkey Water Filter. Now is the time to take action for emergency sake. The links are listed below.

Impact on Land

The photograph above shows a tractor tilling dry ground in preparation for planting. This was taken in 2015, and the condition has worsened considerably since then. 2021 brings bleak news as Arizona water share from the Colorado is cut by 18% in order to conserve the remaining water in Lake Mead, and the Colorado River.

Many farms have gone out of business, most have had to reduce the amount of land used to grow crops, driving prices on the market higher to meet the difference.

Landscaping for commercial and homes have been changed to outlaw lawns, ordering replacement with desert landscapes to conserve, or at the very least a severe cut back in watering schedules for existing lawns and vegetation. Desert foliage is now recommended that require little or no watering, native to the desert, such as Papcool Sage, and Desert Wildflowers.

Seeds for these plants and more, can be purchased on Amazon, including books for guidance.

According to Power Sense (Paraphrased), "The United States is suffering through an extended heat wave and when combined with the worst drought since 1956 energy production across most of the nation is threatened.

Power plants are completely dependent on water for cooling, they are overheating and utilities are shutting them down or running their plants at lower capacity.

If the water levels in the rivers they use for cooling drop too low, the power plant – already overworked from the heat – won't be able to draw in enough water and if the cooling water discharged from the plant raises already high river water temperatures above safe environmental limits a plant will be forced to shut down." (Richard Mills, August 24, 2012)

How much more is this a reality now in 2021 with water levels already at all time lows, and continuing to deplete over time. Back in 2000 it was declared a 22 year draught, and it seems to be getting worse.

Generators may be another source for power if electrical production experiences outages. It is a good thing Solar Power has been implemented for production of electricity, but there may not be enough to supply the total demand.

If the power goes out for any reason, emergency back up is necessary to keep refrigerators, freezers, air condition (during summer), and lights. Otherwise, a lot of food will go to waste if the power is out for several days.

A good generator would help. I am providing links just for ideas on what to look for. There are many brands, some noisy, some not. Consider basic over all needs when searching for other sources of power.

Water Freedom System

Simple, inexpensive plans to construct a system to extract water from the atmosphere.

This is a time that requires each of us to consider alternate processes from the norm. It is not a time to panic, but to engage in advanced preparation as precaution.

Water storage is essential in an emergency, there are many ways to store water safely. If power goes away due to water shortage for production, a power back-up is necessary to keep refrigerators, freezers and lights working. Generators, (gas, propane, solar battery powered), help to preserve cold foods, maintain lights.
